Neuroimaging in autism spectrum disorder: brain structure and function across the lifespan.

Over the past decade, in-vivo MRI studies have provided many invaluable insights into the neural substrates underlying autism spectrum disorder (ASD), which is now known to be associated with neurodevelopmental variations in brain anatomy, functioning, and connectivity. These systems-level features of ASD pathology seem to develop differentially across the human lifespan so that the cortical abnormalities that occur in children with ASD differ from those noted at other stages of life. Thus, investigation of the brain in ASD poses particular methodological challenges, which must be addressed to

Thalamic and functional correlates of processing speed in pediatric epilepsy syndromes: an exploratory neuroimaging study.

PURPOSE: Children with self-limited epilepsy with centrotemporal spikes (SeLECTS) and childhood absence epilepsy (CAE) often have favorable seizure outcomes, but cognitive inefficiencies may persist and affect school functioning. Whether choice reaction time (CRT) is related to somatomotor connectivity and thalamic or hippocampal volumes in these syndromes remains unclear. METHODS: We performed an exploratory secondary analysis of public pediatric epilepsy neuroimaging data. After excluding one participant with SeLECTS because of FreeSurfer segmentation failure, the final structural and funct

A systematic review and narrative synthesis of functional neuroimaging studies for chronic ocular surface pain.

Chronic ocular surface pain (COSP) is a debilitating condition of the eye driven by nociceptive, nociplastic, and neuropathic mechanisms. While individual studies using functional neuroimaging techniques to investigate ocular pain exist, the full extent, methodologies, and cumulative findings of this body of literature have not been systematically synthesized. Using a systematic review approach, we identified 5 articles evaluating the use of functional neuroimaging in COSP patients from an initial pool of 643 unique studies. All studies used functional magnetic resonance imaging exclusively as

Molecular basis underlying functional connectivity of fusiform gyrus subregions: A transcriptome-neuroimaging spatial correlation study.

The fusiform gyrus (FG) subserves a range of visual cognitive functions likely arising from its distinct subregions that present different connectivity profiles. Nevertheless, the molecular basis underlying such connectivity variability across FG subregions is still an open question. Resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) data were collected from a discovery dataset (361 healthy subjects) and two independent cross-race, cross-scanner validation datasets (103 and 329 healthy subjects). We adopted a newly developed standardized pipeline to process gene expression data from th

Neuroimaging guided tES to facilitate complex laparoscopic surgical tasks - insights from functional near-infrared spectroscopy.

Fundamentals of Laparoscopic Surgery (FLS) is a prerequisite for board certification in general surgery in the USA. In FLS, the suturing task with intracorporeal knot tying is considered the most complex task. Transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) of the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (PFC) has been shown to facilitate FLS surgical skill acquisition where 2mA tDCS for 15min with the anode over F3 (10/10 EEG montage) and cathode over F4 has improved performance score in an open knot-tying task. Since PFC has a functional organization related to the hierarchy of cognitive control, we pe

Altered Structural and Functional Connectivity Contribute to Rapid Ejaculation: Insights from a Multimodal Neuroimaging Study.

Little is known about how the aberrant structural and functional connectivity relates to the rapid ejaculation. Data of diffusion tensor imaging and resting state functional magnetic resonance imaging were acquired from 32 PE patients and 38 healthy controls (HCs). Firstly, we investigated the structural connectivity (SC) disruptions of PE patients using the method of graph theoretical analysis. Brain regions with impaired nodal strength were then defined as regions of interest (ROI). Secondly, the corresponding functional connectivity (FC) changes were explored. Finally, the correlation analy

Symptomatic Characteristics of Parkinson's Disease Induced by Neuroleptic Drugs, Based on a Functional Neuroimaging Diagnosis.

Objective When patients take neuroleptics, the distinction between Parkinson's disease (PD) and drug-induced parkinsonism (DIP) based solely on clinical features can become difficult. At present, 123I-FP-CIT SPECT (DAT-SPECT) and 123I-metaiodobenzylguanidine (MIBG) myocardial scintigraphy are widely used to supplement the differential diagnosis of parkinsonism. This study assessed the clinical symptoms and neurological findings in the patients suspected of having DIP based on DAT-SPECT findings. Methods Twenty-three patients (11 men, 12 women, age: 52-81 years old) presenting with DIP were rec

Functional Neuroimaging Correlates of Aggression in Psychosis: A Systematic Review With Recommendations for Future Research.

Background and methods: Aggression in psychosis is clinically important. We systematically compiled the evidence on functional correlates of aggression in psychosis searching PubMed, EMBASE, ScienceDirect, and PsycINFO until September 2017. We included studies reporting functional brain imaging correlates of aggression comparing: (1) affective or non-affective psychosis groups with a history of violence or with aggression operationalized using questionnaires, (2) affective or non-affective psychosis groups with a history of violence or with aggression operationalized using questionnaires to co

Pharmacologic Modulation of Noxious Stimulus-evoked Brain Activation in Cynomolgus Macaques Observed with Functional Neuroimaging.

Maintaining effective analgesia during invasive procedures performed under general anesthesia is important for minimizing postoperative complications and ensuring satisfactory patient wellbeing and recovery. While patients under deep sedation may demonstrate an apparent lack of response to noxious stimulation, areas of the brain related to pain perception may still be activated. Thus, these patients may still experience pain during invasive procedures. The current study used anesthetized or sedated cynomolgus macaques and functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) to assess the activation of

Diagnostic neuroimaging markers of obsessive-compulsive disorder: Initial evidence from structural and functional MRI studies.

As of yet, no diagnostic biomarkers are available for obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), and its diagnosis relies entirely upon the recognition of behavioural features assessed through clinical interview. Neuroimaging studies have shown that various brain structures are abnormal in OCD patients compared to healthy controls. However, the majority of these results are based on average differences between groups, which limits diagnostic usage in clinical practice. In recent years, a growing number of studies have applied multivariate pattern analysis (MVPA) techniques on neuroimaging data to ex

The Physiological Bases of Hidden Noise-Induced Hearing Loss: Protocol for a Functional Neuroimaging Study.

BACKGROUND: Rodent studies indicate that noise exposure can cause permanent damage to synapses between inner hair cells and high-threshold auditory nerve fibers, without permanently altering threshold sensitivity. These demonstrations of what is commonly known as hidden hearing loss have been confirmed in several rodent species, but the implications for human hearing are unclear. OBJECTIVE: Our Medical Research Council-funded program aims to address this unanswered question, by investigating functional consequences of the damage to the human peripheral and central auditory nervous system that

Structural and Functional Neuroimaging of Visual Hallucinations in Lewy Body Disease: A Systematic Literature Review.

Patients with Lewy body disease (LBD) frequently experience visual hallucinations (VH), well-formed images perceived without the presence of real stimuli. The structural and functional brain mechanisms underlying VH in LBD are still unclear. The present review summarises the current literature on the neural correlates of VH in LBD, namely Parkinson's disease (PD), and dementia with Lewy bodies (DLB). Following a systematic literature search, 56 neuroimaging studies of VH in PD and DLB were critically reviewed and evaluated for quality assessment. The main structural neuroimaging results on VH

Structural and functional neuroimaging in patients with Parkinson's disease and visual hallucinations: A critical review.

Patients with Parkinson's disease (PD) may develop various non-motor symptoms (NMS) during the course of the illness and psychosis is one of the common NMS of PD. Visual hallucinations (VH) are the most common manifestation of psychosis in PD. The exact pathogenesis of VH in patients with PD is not clearly understood. Presence of VH has been described to be associated with rapid cognitive decline and increased nursing home placements in PD patients. A large number of structural and functional neuroimaging studies have been conducted to understand the cerebral basis of VH in PD. Structural imag

Brain basis of early parent-infant interactions: psychology, physiology, and in vivo functional neuroimaging studies.

Parenting behavior critically shapes human infants' current and future behavior. The parent-infant relationship provides infants with their first social experiences, forming templates of what they can expect from others and how to best meet others' expectations. In this review, we focus on the neurobiology of parenting behavior, including our own functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) brain imaging experiments of parents. We begin with a discussion of background, perspectives and caveats for considering the neurobiology of parent-infant relationships. Then, we discuss aspects of the psyc

Beyond hypofrontality: a quantitative meta-analysis of functional neuroimaging studies of working memory in schizophrenia.

Although there is considerable evidence that patients with schizophrenia fail to activate the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC) to the degree seen in normal comparison subjects when performing working memory or executive tasks, hypofrontality may be coupled with relatively increased activity in other brain regions. However, most imaging studies of working memory in schizophrenia have focused on DLPFC activity. The goal of this work is to review functional neuroimaging studies that contrasted patients with schizophrenia and healthy comparison subjects during a prototypical working memory t

Effects of rTMS on swallowing function and neuroimaging features in post-stroke dysphagia.

INTRODUCTION: Dysphagia, or difficulty swallowing, is common after stroke and can lead to complications like malnutrition, aspiration pneumonia, and increased mortality. Recovery is driven by neural reorganization, yet traditional interventions focus on managing swallowing difficulties rather than restoring brain function. Neuromodulatory approaches like repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) show potential for promoting brain plasticity and recovery. While rTMS has demonstrated efficacy in improving swallowing after stroke, few studies have explored its neural mechanisms at the b

A neuroimaging functional connectivity signature of emotional conflict monitoring predicting cognitive decline in type 2 diabetes.

Type 2 diabetes (T2D) is associated with cognitive decline and neurodegenerative disorders. Changes in the connections between brain regions responsible for emotions and memory might play a role in the reduced cognitive function observed in individuals with diabetes. Utilizing machine learning approaches on neuroimaging data shows potential for exploring these intricate associations. A research study was carried out with 40 individuals diagnosed with T2D and 30 control participants, all of whom were middle-aged and right-handed. The participants underwent neuropsychological assessments and fMR

Distinct thalamic functional connectivity and volume patterns across focal epilepsies in children: A multimodal neuroimaging study.

OBJECTIVE: The thalamus is a key hub in seizure propagation, and its nuclei are emerging targets for neuromodulation. However, the contributions of individual nuclei to epileptic networks remain unclear, particularly in children, who are less studied than adults. We investigated structural and functional thalamic alterations across different pediatric focal epilepsies and their associations with clinical features and postsurgical outcomes. METHODS: We retrospectively studied children with temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE), frontal lobe epilepsy (FLE), and posterior quadrant epilepsy (PQE) and heal
