Rethinking thecodonty: the influence of two centuries of comparative dental anatomy on our understanding of tooth evolution.

'Thecodont' refers to teeth implanted in sockets within the jaw, a condition traditionally associated with living mammals and crocodylians, which also coincidentally have teeth attached by ligaments to the socket walls (gomphosis). For over a century, the bony periodontium of many other amniotes has been described as a single tissue, 'bone of attachment', causing confusion over dental tissue homology. The conventional definitions of 'thecodonty' exclude species with fused teeth ('ankylothecodonts'), implying a fundamental difference between mammals, crocodylians and most other vertebrates. How

Root and canal morphology of Thai mandibular molars.

AIM: To investigate the root and canal morphology of 351 mandibular permanent molars collected from an indigenous Thai population. METHODOLOGY: The cleaned teeth were accessed, the pulp dissolved by sodium hypochlorite under ultrasonication and the pulp system injected with Indian ink. The teeth were rendered clear by demineralization and immersion in methyl salicylate. The following observations were made: (i) number of roots and their morphology; (ii) number of root canals per tooth; (iii) number of root canals per root; (iv) root canal configuration in each root using Vertucci's classifica

Deep learning-based fractured tooth detection in occlusal radiographs.

BACKGROUND: This study highlights the importance of accurate and quick diagnosis of detection, and classification of fractured teeth and the potential benefits of applying deep learning (DL) techniques to solve this problem. METHODS: In the study, occlusal radiography (OR) of the premaxilla is used for tooth fracture detection of teeth 11 and 21. For that, a dataset that contains 200 ORs of various tooth conditions was constructed. In the proposed method, teeth 11 and 21 are automatically detected in OR images using a YOLOv9-based machine learning framework as the first step. Then, images of

Multiple calcifying hyperplastic dental follicles: comparison with hyperplastic dental follicles.

BACKGROUND: Multiple calcifying hyperplastic dental follicles (MCHDF) is a rare disorder that is characterized by multiple impacted teeth and enlarged dental follicles that include calcifications. The current lack of information characterizing MCHDF impedes clinicians from making prompt differential diagnoses. We describe five cases of MCHDF and analyze their clinical and histopathological features in an effort to compare MCHDF with hyperplastic dental follicles (HDF) of singly impacted teeth. METHODS: Our five cases of MCHDF were examined and clinically/histologically compared with data from

Combined treatment of surgical extrusion and crown lengthening procedure for severe crown-root fracture of a growing patient: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Preservation of a healthy periodontium is critical for the long-term success of restored teeth. In cases of extensive caries, tooth fracture, inadequate crown length, and increased esthetic demands, the restorative margins need to be placed apical to the gingival margin. Violation of the biological width due to dental trauma frequently appears in clinical practice. There are three treatment options for preserving biological width and the ferrule effect: crown lengthening, orthodontic extrusion, and surgical extrusion. This case report describes the surgical intervention and fixed p

Root canal morphology of South asian Indian mandibular premolar teeth.

INTRODUCTION: The purpose of this study was to study the root canal morphology of South Asian Indian mandibular premolars using a tooth clearing technique. METHODS: Two hundred mandibular premolar teeth were collected from different dental schools and clinics in India. After pulp tissue removal and root canal staining with Indian ink, the specimens were decalcified with 5% nitric acid, dehydrated in ethyl alcohol, and subsequently cleared in methyl salicylate. RESULTS: Of the 200 mandibular premolars, 100 were first premolars and 100 were second premolars. Of the first premolars, 94% had a s

[Bilateral foreign bodies in the airway. Report of one case].

Inhaled foreign bodies can be a life-threatening emergency and requires immediate intervention. We report a 40-year-old man who came to the ER complaining of chest pain and cough. He had lost his dental prosthesis. Chest X-Rays showed two foreign bodies, one at the intermediate bronchus and the other at the left posterior basal segmental bronchus. By fibrobronchoscopy, porcelain fused to a metal dental crown of six teeth was extracted from the right side, and a cast of metal from the left side.

Interventions for treating traumatised ankylosed permanent front teeth.

BACKGROUND: Teeth that have suffered trauma can fuse to the surrounding bone - the process referred to as dental ankylosis. Ankylosed permanent front teeth fail to erupt during facial growth and can become displaced, thus resulting in functional and aesthetic problems. Dental ankylosis is also associated with root resorption, which eventually leads to the loss of affected teeth. Different interventions for the management of ankylosed permanent front teeth have been described but it is unclear which are the most effective. OBJECTIVES: To assess the effects of treatment options for ankylosed pe

Triple Tooth in Primary Dentition: A Rare Case Report.

The occurrence of triplication in the deciduous teeth is rare. However, it can cause several problems in primary dentition, alteration of development, and eruption of permanent successors. Case Presentation: A three-year-old boy presented with an exuberant acute periapical abscess in the left front teeth region of the upper jaw. Examination revealed a presence of a triple tooth involving the central and lateral left primary incisors and a supernumerary tooth. Radiographs showed that the fused teeth had separate roots, pulp chambers and root canals. The implemented treatment was extraction unde

Studies of craniofacial development in rotating bioreactors.

Several studies in our laboratory assessed the effect of 3-D culture in various rotating bioreactors on craniofacial development. Initially, mouse first branchial arches were cultured. Molar and incisor development occurred in both upper and lower jaws, but maxilla development was deficient because no brain was present. In a second study using excised whole heads, the oral epithelia fused and teeth did not develop. External structure of the face was obliterated, although internally, eye development was excellent. To preserve both internal spaces and external face structure, subsequent experime

Clinical evaluation of posterior zirconia-based and porcelain-fused-to-metal crowns with a vertical preparation technique: an up to 5-year retrospective cohort study.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the clinical conditions of single-unit posterior restorations on teeth prepared without finishing line, after 5.6 years of clinical service. MATERIALS AND METHODS: 50 crowns (25 zirconia-based (Zr) and 25 porcelain-fused-to-metal (PFM)) were selected from 34 patients. The restorations were evaluated according to the California Dental Association (CDA) Quality Criteria, and periodontal variables were studied in the abutment teeth compared with the unrestored contralateral teeth. Variables were examined using Mann-Whitney and Pearson´s Chi-Square tests (α = 0.05). The suc

Fused double supernumerary premolars of the mandible: a rare case.

The incidence of nonsyndromic supernumerary premolars is rare. Supernumerary premolars are likely to undergo pathological changes. The most commonly encountered complications with these teeth are dentigerous cyst and root resorption of the adjacent tooth. This paper is about impacted double fused supernumerary premolars in the right mandiblular body associated with an impacted first premolar in a 17-year-old male. Under local anesthesia, the supernumerary premolars and the impacted permanent first premolar were surgically removed. Early diagnosis followed by an appropriate treatment at the rig

Treatment of cariously involved fused maxillary primary lateral and central incisors.

A 3-and-a-half-year-old male child presented with fused cariously involved right maxillary primary central and lateral incisors as well as a previously traumatized non-vital left primary central incisor with a draining fistula. The child also had other restorative needs and the decision taken was to address all needs under a G.A. With respect to the fused incisors, these were split and root canals treatment was performed for all three incisors which were then restored with stainless steel crowns with esthetic facings.

Prosthodontic Rehabilitation with a Telescopic Prosthesis of a Nonsyndromic Oligodontia Patient.

Oligodontia is the congenital absence of six or more permanent teeth, excluding the third molars. Oligodontia of permanent dentition is a rare occurrence. Preservation of the remaining deciduous dentition in such situations is important for both functional and esthetic rehabilitation of the patient. This clinical report describes the rehabilitation of a 16-year-old male with oligodontia of permanent teeth treated by an interdisciplinary team of prosthodontist, pedodontist, and orthodontist. The remaining deciduous dentition was endodontically treated. Occlusal vertical dimension (OVD) of the d

The cell biology and role of resorptive cells in diseases: A review.

Resorptive cells are responsible for the resorption of mineralized matrix of hard tissues. Bone-resorbing cells are called osteoclasts; however, they can resorb mineralized dental tissues or calcified cartilage and then they are called odontoclasts and chondroclasts, respectively. Resorptive cells form when mononuclear precursors derived from a monocyte-macrophage cell lineage are attracted to certain mineralized surfaces and subsequently fuse and adhere onto them for exerting their resorbing activity. These cells are responsible for degradation of calcified extracellular matrix composed of or

[Radiation caries].

Two mechanisms are discussed regarding etiology and pathogenesis: the direct mechanism by radioeffect on teeth, lying in irradiation field, and the indirect mechanism by alteration of the secretion from salivary glands (hypo- and dyssalivation, xerostomia), alteration of the physiological mouth-flora (dominance of Streptococcus mutans) and deficient mouth and tooth hygiene by the patients. Clinically four types of radiogenic tooth defects are discerned: the superficial carious destruction of the necks of the teeth, the change of the tooth-colour to brown-black, an early gradual fuse of the edg

The histology of rhynchosaur (Diapsida, Archosauromorpha) ankylothecodonty.

The study of the connection between the teeth and the jaw is important for understanding the palaeobiology of vertebrates, but inconsistent terminology and incomplete sampling have made it difficult to assess the evolutionary significance of some of the related characters. Among archosauromorphs, tooth attachment in dinosaurs and crocodylians is nearly identical to that of mammals in featuring a ligamentous connection (gomphosis), whereas closely related forms appear to have teeth fused to the jaws (ankylosis), as in most other amniotes. Hence, studying tooth attachment of stem-archosaurs is p
