Gluten-related disorders (GRD) include celiac disease (CD), non celiac gluten sensitivity (NCGS) and wheat allergy (WA), conditions that are associated with the ingestion of gluten-containing food. Gut microbiota composition and function may be involved in the pathogenesis of GRD. In untreated CD the microbiota is characterized by a reduction in beneficial microbes like Lactobacillus and Bifidobacterium and an increase in pathogenic ones such as Bacteroides and E. coli. Dysbiosis is a hallmark of CD, persists across various disease stages and is only partially corrected by a gluten-free diet.

BACKGROUND: In traditional Chinese medicine, it is believed that the "tongue coating is produced by fumigation of stomach gas", and that tongue coating can reflect the health status of humans, especially stomach health. Therefore, studying the relationship between the microbiome of the tongue coating and the gastric fluid is of great significance for understanding the biological basis of tongue diagnosis.
METHODS: This paper detected the microbiomes of the tongue coating and the gastric fluid in 35 gastritis patients using metagenomic sequencing technology, systematically constructed the micr

Helicobacter pylori infection (Hp-I) represents a typical microbial agent intervening in the complex mechanisms of gastric homeostasis by disturbing the balance between the host gastric microbiota and mucosa-related factors, leading to inflammatory changes, dysbiosis and eventually gastric cancer. The normal gastric microbiota shows diversity, with Proteobacteria [Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) belongs to this family], Firmicutes, Actinobacteria, Bacteroides and Fusobacteria being the most abundant phyla. Most studies indicate that H. pylori has inhibitory effects on the colonization of other

Studying respiratory illness-specific microbial signatures and their interaction with other micro-residents could provide a better understanding of lung microbial ecology. Each respiratory illness has a specific disease etiology, however, so far no study has revealed disease-specific microbial markers. The present study was designed to determine disease-specific microbial features and their interactions with other residents in chronic obstructive pulmonary diseases (stable and exacerbated), sarcoidosis, and interstitial lung diseases. Broncho-alveolar lavage samples (n = 43) were analyzed by S

Infertility is one of the most common reproductive system diseases, and no effective method is available for its treatment. Although in vitro fertilization (IVF) has been widely used to enhance the clinical pregnancy outcome of infertility, the unsatisfied pregnancy rate with unknown reasons is obtained. To identify the possible cause of IVF failure, 555 patients were enrolled in the present study to determine their relevant clinical characteristics and vaginal microbiota. Our results indicated that the age and endometrium thickness significantly affected the pregnancy success rate of pregnant

Dogs present almost all their skin sites covered by hair, but canine skin disorders are more common in certain skin sites and breeds. The goal of our study is to characterize the composition and variability of the skin microbiota in healthy dogs and to evaluate the effect of the breed, the skin site, and the individual. We have analyzed eight skin sites of nine healthy dogs from three different breeds by massive sequencing of 16S rRNA gene V1-V2 hypervariable regions. The main phyla inhabiting the skin microbiota in healthy dogs are Proteobacteria, Firmicutes, Fusobacteria, Actinobacteria, and

Periodontitis is caused by dysbiotic subgingival bacterial communities that may lead to increased bacterial invasion into gingival tissues. Although shifts in community structures associated with transition from health to periodontitis have been well characterized, the nature of bacteria present within the gingival tissue of periodontal lesions is not known. To characterize microbiota within tissues of periodontal lesions and compare them with plaque microbiota, gingival tissues and subgingival plaques were obtained from 7 patients with chronic periodontitis. A sequencing analysis of the 16S r

BACKGROUND: Previously rare A2ML1 variants were identified to confer otitis media susceptibility in an indigenous Filipino community and in otitis-prone US children. The goal of this study is to describe differences in the middle ear microbiome between carriers and non-carriers of an A2ML1 duplication variant that increases risk for chronic otitis media among indigenous Filipinos with poor health care access.
METHODS: Ear swabs were obtained from 16 indigenous Filipino individuals with chronic otitis media, of whom 11 carry the A2ML1 duplication variant. Ear swabs were submitted for 16S rRNA

The bacterial phylum Synergistetes consists of Gram-negative anaerobes. Oral Synergistetes are divided in two main clusters, namely A and B. Increasing evidence demonstrates their involvement in etiology of oral infections, including apical periodontitis. This condition causes bone loss around the apex of the tooth, subsequent to pulp inflammation (pulpitis). Although the presence of Synergistetes has been confirmed in endodontic infections by molecular methods, these have not been morphologically identified in the affected apical region, and their prevalence among different endodontic infecti

OBJECTIVES: Fusobacterium can contribute to oral diseases, but also pose as a systemic risk factor. This genus, and especially F. nucleatum, can be found in colorectal cancer (CRC) tissue and is involved in multiple aspects of this type of cancer. Previous studies indicated a possible oral origin of these bacteria; however, stronger evidence is needed to reach a definitive conclusion. This pilot study aimed to establish a method to successfully compare, at the strain level, fusobacteria from the oral cavity and CRC resection material for future cohort studies of CRC patients.

The cause of perioral dermatitis is still unknown. We previously reported that rod-shaped bacteria (RB) containing intracellular granules were detected in cases of perioral dermatitis at a high incidence. The aim of this study was to study further the role of RB in perioral dermatitis. Altogether 10 patients with perioral dermatitis and eight patients with perioral corticosteroid-induced rosacea, who were referred to our department from 2009 to 2014, were examined for the presence of RB, using the tape-stripping toluidine blue method. RB were detected on the surfaces of the roots of vellus hai

BACKGROUND: Many species implicated in the pathogenesis of periodontal disease produce volatile sulfur compounds (VSC). This investigation examined the relationship between levels of sulfide and subgingival bacterial species in the same periodontal pockets.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: Twenty chronic periodontitis subjects were measured clinically at six sites per tooth for plaque, gingivitis, bleeding on probing, suppuration, pocket depth and attachment level. Subgingival plaque samples, taken from the mesial aspect of each tooth, were individually analyzed for their content of 40 bacterial species

BACKGROUND: The standard treatment for stage III colorectal cancer (CRC) is surgery, followed by adjuvant chemotherapy (AC). However, the efficacy of AC is limited and approximately 30% of patients experience recurrence. Therefore, easily assessable molecular biomarkers that can predict the response to AC are needed. Here, we aimed to identify predictive biomarkers of the response to AC using tumor transcriptomic data.
METHODS: Tumor specimens from 253 patients who underwent surgery for stage III CRC between 1997 and 2019 were analyzed using RNA sequencing. Transcriptional subtyping and analy

Neonatal jaundice is a common disease that affects up to 60% of newborns. Herein, we performed a comparative analysis of the gut microbiome in neonatal jaundice and non-neonatal jaundice infants (NJIs) and identified gut microbial alterations in neonatal jaundice pre- and post-treatment. We prospectively collected 232 fecal samples from 51 infants at five time points (0, 1, 3, 6, and 12 months). Finally, 114 samples from 6 NJIs and 19 non-NJI completed MiSeq sequencing and analysis. We characterized the gut microbiome and identified microbial differences and gene functions. Meconium microbial

Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) related chronic gastritis is a well-known major etiological factor for gastric cancer development. However, H. pylori-negative gastritis (HpN) is not well described. We aimed to examine gastric mucosal microbiota in HpN compared to H. pylori-positive gastritis (HpP) and H. pylori-negative non-gastritis group (control). Here, we studied 11 subjects with HpN, 40 with HpP and 24 controls. We performed endoscopy with six gastric biopsies. Comparison groups were defined based on strict histological criteria for the disease and H. pylori diagnosis. We used 16S rRNA ge
