Gonadotropin-inhibitory hormone and its receptor in the avian reproductive system.

Many hormones that are classified as neuropeptides are synthesized in vertebrate gonads in addition to the brain. Receptors for these hormones are also expressed in gonadal tissue; thus there is potential for a highly localized autocrine or paracrine effect of these hormones on a variety of gonadal functions. In the present study we focused on gonadotropin-inhibitory hormone (GnIH), a neuropeptide that was first discovered in the hypothalamus of birds. We present different lines of evidence for the synthesis of GnIH and its receptor in the avian reproductive system including gonads and accesso

No host too tough: New records of Plasmodium huffi in competent avian hosts, including Brazilian vultures and falcons.

Plasmodium huffi was first described in toucans of Brazil and was mistakenly believed to be a species exclusive to the order Piciformes. However, subsequent molecular and morphological studies conducted in red-legged seriemas, along with the diverse range of lineages identified in Anseriformes, Charadriiformes, Cathartiformes, Columbiformes, Galliformes, Pelecaniformes, Struthioniformes, Psittaciformes, and Passeriformes, have revealed that this parasite is, in fact, a generalist. Here, we provide new molecular and morphological data on P. huffi infecting previously unreported avian hosts in B

A Cross-Sectional Survey of Gastrointestinal Parasites in an Ornithological Garden.

Captive birds in collections may be infested with a wide range of parasites. Globally, information on parasitic infections and their health implications in ornithological collections are scarce. In the present study, the prevalence of parasitic infections in an ornithological garden in Tehran was investigated. Samples (n = 109) from various bird species were collected. Direct wet smear, sedimentation, flotation with Sheather's sugar, and modified Ziehl-Neelsen and Giemsa staining were used for parasite screening. Parasites were identified in 57 (52.3%, 95% confidence interval [CI] 42.9-61.7) s

Mandibular morphology clarifies phylogenetic relationships near the origin of crown birds.

BACKGROUND: The phylogenetic relationships of fossil birds near the origin of the avian crown group remain debated, in part due to a limited amount of character evidence from incomplete fossils. The avian lower jaw provides a potentially rich source of additional character data, yet fusion of the individual bony elements composing the avian post-dentary complex has impeded efforts to explore its phylogenetic signal. Here, we use high-resolution µCT-scanning to separate the individual bony elements of the mandibles of several immature crown birds and key fossil taxa, and use those data to asses

A RETROSPECTIVE STUDY OF HEPATIC HEMOSIDEROSIS AND IRON STORAGE DISEASE IN SEVERAL CAPTIVE AND FREE-RANGING AVIAN SPECIES.

Some wild species of mammals and birds are prone to excessive iron accumulation, especially when maintained in human care. Hemosiderosis is the process of intracellular accumulation of iron without evidence of toxicity, whereas hemochromatosis is characterized by severe iron accumulation with accompanying organ damage. Iron storage disease (ISD) occurs when organ damage is severe and causing clinical signs. This retrospective study investigated the occurrence of hemosiderosis and ISD across a variety of avian taxa, including captive and free-ranging birds. Archived paraffin-embedded hepatic sa

Comparative pathology of select agent influenza a virus infections.

Influenza A virus infections may spread rapidly in human populations and cause variable mortality. Two of these influenza viruses have been designated as select agents: 1918 H1N1 virus and highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) virus. Knowledge of the pathology of these virus infections in humans, other naturally infected species, and experimental animals is important to understand the pathogenesis of influenza, to design appropriate models for evaluation of medical countermeasures, and to make correct diagnoses. The most important complication of influenza in humans is viral pneumonia, whic

Male-biased mutation rates revealed from Z and W chromosome-linked ATP synthase alpha-subunit (ATP5A1) sequences in birds.

Whether the mutation rate differs between sexes has been a matter of discussion for years. Molecular analyses of mammals have indicated that males mutate more often than females, as manifested by the faster rate of neutral sequence evolution on the Y chromosome than on the X chromosome. However, these observations can as well be interpreted as specific reduction of the X chromosome mutation rate, which would be adaptive because of reducing the number of slightly deleterious recessive mutations exposed in hemizygote males. Recently, data from birds have suggested that vertebrate mutation rates

Escherichia coli as a carrier of tetracyclines and penicillins resistance in wild pheasant (Phasianus colchicus).

Wild animals like pheasant seem to be a good source of information about human activities. Therefore, the wild pheasants and relative stable appendix microcenosis were selected for antibiotic resistance testing. Penicillin resistance by MALDI-TOF Mass Spectrometry and tetracyclines resistance by genetic methods using specific primers were tested. Differences between tetracycline and penicillin resistance were detected. Results showed high prevalence of resistant Escherichia coli isolated from wild pheasant appendix. E. coli isolated from wild pheasant appendix carried plasmids for penicillins

Occurrence of a Cryptosporidium xiaoi-like genotype in peafowl (Pavo cristatus) in China.

The aim of this study was to survey the Cryptosporidium species in peafowls (Pavo cristatus) in Henan Province, China. A total of 143 fecal specimens collected from a breeding farm were tested for Cryptosporidium by nested PCR targeting the small subunit rRNA (SSU rRNA), 70-kDa heat shock protein (HSP70), and actin genes of Cryptosporidium followed by sequence analysis. Only one isolate from an asymptomatic host was obtained, and the isolate differed from a new C. xiaoi-like genotype by one nucleotide and from C. xiaoi or C. bovis at the SSU rRNA locus by six nucleotides. Likewise, the actin g

Safety of fenbendazole in common peafowl (Pavo cristatus).

The present study was undertaken to find out the safety levels of fenbendazole in common peafowl. This bird, raised on aviaries and zoos, can be severely parasitized with Ascaridia galli (enteric worms) and Syngamus trachea (gapeworm) along with other parasitic worms. Fenbendazole is a highly effective benzimidazole-class anthelmintic in animals. The objective of this work was to provide target animal safety data in young peafowl and to demonstrate reproductive safety in adult birds. During the experimental study, diets containing fenbendazole at 0, 100, 200 and 300 ppm were fed for 21 days (t

Pemphigus-like immune-mediated dermatosis in a Korean native black-bone fowl.

A 3-yr-old female Korean native black-bone fowl weighing 1 kg presented with refractory dermatosis characterized by hyperkeratosis and alopecia on the head, neck, and scapular region. Antibiotic therapy before referral had not reduced the severity of lesions. Histopathologic findings revealed hyperkeratosis, acantholysis, heterophil infiltration, and ballooning degeneration in the epidermis. Immunohistochemical analysis showed immunoglobulin G deposits in the intercellular spaces of the intermediate layer of the epidermis. Based on these observations, this case was diagnosed as a pemphigus-lik

Effects of load carrying on metabolic cost and hindlimb muscle dynamics in guinea fowl (Numida meleagris).

The goal of this study was to test whether the contractile patterns of two major hindlimb extensors of guinea fowl are altered by load-carrying exercise. We hypothesized that changes in contractile pattern, specifically a decrease in muscle shortening velocity or enhanced stretch activation, would result in a reduction in locomotor energy cost relative to the load carried. We also anticipated that changes in kinematics would reflect underlying changes in muscle strain. Oxygen consumption, muscle activation intensity, and fascicle strain rate were measured over a range of speeds while animals r

In vitro synergistic effect of baicalin with azithromycin against Staphylococcus saprophyticus isolated from francolins with ophthalmia.

Francolins ophthalmia is often caused by resistant conditional pathogenic bacteria. Conditional pathogenic Staphylococcus saprophyticus is a potential reservoir of macrolides antibiotics resistance gene. Baicalin has been reported as a potential agent to synergistically inhibit the replication of Staphylococcus. The objective of this study was to isolate the pathogen of the francolins ophthalmia, identify the antibiotic resistance profile of isolated S. saprophyticus, and investigate the effect of baicalin combined with azithromycin (Azm) against azithromycin resistant S. saprophyticus (ARSS).

Absence of protection from West Nile virus disease and adverse effects in red legged partridges after non-structural NS1 protein administration.

The red-legged partridge (Alectoris rufa) is a competent host for West Nile virus (WNV) replication and highly susceptible to WNV disease. With the aim to assess in this species whether the inoculation of non-structural protein NS1 from WNV elicits a protective immune response against WNV infection, groups of partridges were inoculated with recombinant NS1 (NS1 group) or an unrelated recombinant protein (mock group), and challenged with infectious WNV. A third group received no inoculation prior to challenge (challenge group). The NS1 group failed to elicit detectable antibodies to NS1 while i

West Nile Virus Infection in Ruffed Grouse ( Bonasa umbellus): Experimental Infection and Protective Effects of Vaccination.

Ruffed grouse ( Bonasa umbellus) population numbers in Pennsylvania dramatically declined during the early 2000s and have subsequently remained depressed throughout much of the state. While this decline has been temporally associated with the presence of West Nile virus (WNV), lack of information on the WNV susceptibility of this popular game bird species has limited the ability to interpret the potential impacts of WNV. To address this knowledge gap, virologic, immunologic, pathologic, and clinical responses as well as protective effects of vaccination following experimental WNV inoculation i

Cloacotaenia megalops (Nitzsch in Creplin, 1829) (Cestoda, Hymenolepididae) in wild ducks in Western Pomerania, Poland.

Cloacotaenia megalops (Nitzsch in Creplin, 1892) is a polyxenic and cosmopolitan tapeworm from the family Hymenolepididae. Its generic name derives from their typical location (cloaca), and the typical final hosts which are birds typically associated with water and marsh environments: Anseriformes, Galliformes and Gruiformes. In Poland, the presence of C. megalops has been observed so far in 16 species of ducks from the Baltic coast, the Mazurian Lake District, Wielkopolsko-Kujawska Lowland, Mazovian Lowland, and Podlasie Lowland. In Western Pomerania, quantitative structure analyses were only

Highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI H5N1, clade 2.3.4.4b, genotype C2.1) in commercial ring-necked pheasants during the 2022 outbreak in the United States.

Highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) virus H5N1 clade 2.3.4.4b was introduced into North America in 2021. In 2022, clade 2.3.4.4b spilled into domestic poultry in the United States (U.S.), resulting in the largest HPAI outbreak in U.S. history. In December 2023, H5N1 2.3.4.4b was detected on an upland game bird farm in Pennsylvania. History, clinical signs, and gross lesions were suggestive of marble spleen disease. However, HPAI was identified by real-time reverse-transcriptase polymerase chain reaction; gene sequencing confirmed genotype C2.1 with phylodynamic analyses providing evidence
