A game-theoretic approach to valuating toxoplasmosis vaccination strategies.

The protozoan Toxoplasma gondii is a parasite often found in wild and domestic cats, and it is the cause of the disease toxoplasmosis. More than 60 million people in the United States carry the parasite, and the Centers for Disease Control have placed toxoplasmosis in their disease classification group Neglected Parasitic Infections as one of five parasitic diseases targeted as priorities for public health action. In recent years, there has been significant progress toward the development of a practical vaccine, so vaccination programs may soon be a viable approach to controlling the disease.

Two distinct neural mechanisms underlying indirect reciprocity.

Cooperation is a hallmark of human society. Humans often cooperate with strangers even if they will not meet each other again. This so-called indirect reciprocity enables large-scale cooperation among nonkin and can occur based on a reputation mechanism or as a succession of pay-it-forward behavior. Here, we provide the functional and anatomical neural evidence for two distinct mechanisms governing the two types of indirect reciprocity. Cooperation occurring as reputation-based reciprocity specifically recruited the precuneus, a region associated with self-centered cognition. During such coope

Punishment does not promote cooperation under exploration dynamics when anti-social punishment is possible.

It has been argued that punishment promotes the evolution of cooperation when mutation rates are high (i.e. when agents engage in 'exploration dynamics'). Mutations maintain a steady supply of agents that punish free-riders, and thus free-riders are at a disadvantage. Recent experiments, however, have demonstrated that free-riders sometimes also pay to punish cooperators. Inspired by these empirical results, theoretical work has explored evolutionary dynamics where mutants are rare, and found that punishment does not promote the evolution of cooperation when this 'anti-social punishment' is al

TV programs that denounce unfair advantage impact women's sensitivity to defection in the public goods game.

We explore the neural underpinnings of gender differences in cooperation and their modulation by intensive media watching. We compared cooperative decisions and electroencephalograph data between genders from who participated in repeated rounds of the public goods game (PGG) and investigated within groups changes that occurred after watching a TV program known as "investigative reporting" that denounces unfair advantages taken by free-riders against the public. Women tended to be more cooperative than men during early rounds of PGG, mostly because they react differently to the defection of oth

Opinion formation model for markets with a social temperature and fear.

In the spirit of behavioral finance, we study the process of opinion formation among investors using a variant of the two-dimensional voter model with a tunable social temperature. Further, a feedback acting on the temperature is introduced, such that social temperature reacts to market imbalances and thus becomes time dependent. In this toy market model, social temperature represents nervousness of agents toward market imbalances representing speculative risk. We use the knowledge about the discontinuous generalized voter model phase transition to determine critical fixed points. The system e

Mexican male homosexual interaction in public contexts.

In western societies, homosexuals must solve problems of how to recognize one another, meet and socialize while avoiding hostility and punishment. In the United States a preferred approach is to establish exclusive homosexual locales; but in Mexico, interaction problems are solved primarily in heterogeneous situations. The article shows how this is accomplished. The material is analyzed using game theory, a perspective which assumes that homosexual interaction exhibits qualities generally associated with games and can be analyzed utilizing concepts such as players, teams, rules, points, winnin

Effects of maximum and minimum offers on reciprocity and trust perceptions during economic decision-making.

INTRODUCTION: Although it is understood that previous betrayals affect future trust decisions, the degree to which this is true remains unclear in terms of frequency and severity. Additionally, it is currently unknown whether this relationship between the frequency and magnitude of received actions and subsequent trust decisions is mirrored when individuals experience acts of generosity. Prospect theory proposes that losses are weighed more heavily than gains, but the comparison between frequent, minor losses or gains and infrequent major losses or gains has yet to be explored. METHODS: The c

Prevention of adolescent reoccurring violence and alcohol abuse: a multiple site evaluation.

"Prevention of Adolescent Reoccurring Violence and Alcohol Abuse: A Multiple Site Evaluation" is a multiple component alcohol abuse and violent behavior prevention strategy, targeted to adolescents ages 16-21 who have high levels of anger, or who are victims/perpetrators of violence, and their families. Three community centers located in upstate New York provided group participants (N = 210) known to have conduct disorder and substance abuse history. The centers were used as the intervention sites over a seven-week period with the youth assessment staff using objective screening measures. The

An evaluation of response allocations to concurrently available slot machine simulations.

Gambling behavior often involves making choices between concurrently available game options. With regard to slot machine gambling, multiple games allow for choices to be made with respect to which game to play. The authors of the present study used a slot machine simulation created in Visual Basic.NET to examine gambling preference. The specific question addressed was whether gamblers prefer a smaller payout more often (averaging around every 10 spins) over a larger payout less often (averaging around every 50 spins). Two types of reinforcement were examined during the study: frequency of payo

Lottery gambling: a review.

This paper presents an exhaustive review of the literature on lottery gambling involving numbers games, lotto, and scratch cards. Results provide tentative answers to the question why people buy lotteries, and support the theory of judgment under uncertainty, cognitive theory of gambling, and theory of demand for gambles. Results also indicate some potential addictiveness of this form of gambling. Youths buy different forms of lotteries and the best predictor of their lottery purchases is their parents' lottery participation. Contrary to the myth that a big lottery win will ruin the winners' l

Exploring 'failure to fail' behaviour among examiners of undergraduate medical programs.

BACKGROUND: Even though a lot has been written on 'failure to fail' behaviors of educators in developed and resource-rich countries, there have been no studies from developing and resource-constrained countries, which are among the major contributors of international medical graduates to the healthcare systems worldwide. Understanding such behaviors of examiners has significant implications for professionalism, patient safety, and healthcare worldwide. Using game theory, the current study explores the determinants of 'failure to fail' underperforming medical students from examiners of six medi

Defensive Strategies and Handling Paths in Intimate Relationship Conflicts: A Dynamic Game Model From the Perspective of Emotional Regulation.

This study develops a dynamic game model of intimate relationship conflicts that incorporates emotion regulation mechanisms, translating cognitive reappraisal and expressive suppression into strategic parameters. The model simulates the dynamic evolution of defensive strategies and intervention paths, capturing the continuous interplay between emotional states and conflict behavior choices in realistic relational contexts. Using longitudinal tracking data from 320 couples and agent-based simulations, we validate the core mechanisms and demonstrate that flexibility in emotion regulation signifi

Involuntary feedback responses reflect a representation of partner actions.

We have a remarkable ability to seamlessly and rapidly coordinate actions with others, from double Dutch to dancing. Humans use high-level partner representations to jointly control voluntary actions, while other work shows lower-level involuntary feedback responses to sudden visual perturbations. Yet, it is unknown if a high-level partner representation can be rapidly expressed through lower-level involuntary sensorimotor circuitry. Here, we test the idea that a partner representation influences involuntary visuomotor feedback responses during a cooperative sensorimotor task. Using two experi

Evolutionary multi-agent reinforcement learning in group social dilemmas.

Reinforcement learning (RL) is a powerful machine learning technique that has been successfully applied to a wide variety of problems. However, it can be unpredictable and produce suboptimal results in complicated learning environments. This is especially true when multiple agents learn simultaneously, which creates a complex system that is often analytically intractable. Our work considers the fundamental framework of Q-learning in public goods games, where RL individuals must work together to achieve a common goal. This setting allows us to study the tragedy of the commons and free-rider eff

Self-serving punishment of a common enemy creates a public good in reef fishes.

A key challenge for evolutionary biologists is to determine conditions under which individuals benefit from a contribution to public goods [1, 2]. For humans, it has been observed that punishment of free riders may promote contributions [3, 4], but the conditions that lead to stable cooperation based on punishment remain hotly debated [5-8]. Here we present empirical evidence that public goods may emerge as a by-product of self-serving punishment in interactions between coral reef fishes and parasitic saber-tooth blennies that stealthily attack their fish victims from behind to take a bite [9]

Negativity bias in attribution of external agency.

This research investigated whether people are more likely to attribute events to external agents when events are negative rather than neutral or positive. Participants more often believed that ultimatum game partners were humans rather than computers when the partners offered unusually unfavorable divisions than unusually favorable divisions (Experiment 1A), even when their human partners had no financial stake in the game (Experiment 1B). In subsequent experiments, participants were most likely to infer that gambles were influenced by an impartial participant when the outcomes of those gamble

Examining Factors Influencing Internet Addiction and Adolescent Risk Behaviors Among Excessive Internet Users.

In China, public concern continues to mount regarding the risks of excessive Internet use among adolescents. This study investigated the factors influencing Internet addiction and adolescent risk behaviors among excessive Internet users. Proposing a conceptual model with a theoretical origin in risk behavior theory and media dependency theory, this study examined the influence of personality traits, online gaming, Internet connectedness (both the overall index and various scopes), and demographics on Internet addiction and risk behaviors (smoking, drinking, gambling, and risky sexual behaviors

Gamified Assessment of Cognitive Impulsivity in Eating Disorders and Mental Ill-Health: Mixed Methods Study Incorporating Lived Experience Co-Design and Evaluation.

BACKGROUND: Cognitive impulsivity is a multifaceted construct associated with symptom severity, functional impairment, and poor quality of life in eating disorders (EDs) and mental ill-health. However, objective assessment of cognitive impulsivity is piecemeal and complex, with many assessment tools lacking psychometric evaluation and ecological validity. Furthermore, validated assessment tools are rarely perceived to be engaging or meaningful by individuals who complete them, limiting their utility in research and forming a barrier to clinical translation. Thus, although cognitive impulsivity

Putting On and Taking Off the Capulana: A Grounded Theory of How Mozambican Women Manage Gender Oppression.

Gender-based oppression is a pervasive global challenge, but has taken a back seat to other issues in Mozambique. The purpose of this grounded theory study was to explore how Mozambican women manage multiple oppressions in their lives in the context of the AIDS epidemic. Using interviews, documents, and constant comparison, we constructed a theory, Putting on and Taking Off the Capulana, to explain how women are socialized into and push back against the prevailing societal misogyny. The theory comprises four categories: Putting on the Capulana, Turning a Blind Eye, Playing the Game, and Taking
