Metabolic effects of nigrostriatal denervation in basal ganglia.

In the past, functional changes in the circuitry of the basal ganglia that occur in Parkinson's disease were primarily analyzed with electrophysiological and 2-deoxyglucose measurements. The increased activity of the subthalamic nucleus (STN) observed has been attributed to a reduction in inhibition mediated by the external segment of the globus pallidus (GPe), secondary to the loss of dopaminergic-neuron influence on D2-receptor-bearing striato-pallidal neurons. More recently, in situ hybridization studies of cytochrome oxidase subunit I have confirmed the overactivity of the STN in the parki

Historical review of research on functions of basal ganglia.

Basal ganglia have been known as a motor center because their lesions cause motor disturbances in involuntary movements such as chorea, ballism or akinesia in parkinsonism. The different types of involuntary movements are closely related to the underlying muscle tone. Mechanisms of bradykinesia or akinesia have been elaborated in physiological studies on Parkinson's disease and the significance of sensorimotor processing or attention arousal has been disclosed as a relevant factor of bradykinesia. Analysis of short-stepped gait, frozen gait or apraxia of gait, has claimed the frontal lobe and

Balance of transmitter activities in the basal ganglia loops.

The basal ganglia of mammals are interconnected with the cortex in multiple loops. The main input station of the basal ganglia, the striatum, receives projections from the cortex and gives rise to two main pathways projecting back to the cortex by way of the thalamus: A direct pathway projecting to the thalamus via two GABAergic neurons and an indirect pathway that projects to the thalamus via three GABAergic neurons. Thus an excitatory cortical input to the striatum is either facilitatory (by the direct pathway) or inhibitory (by the indirect pathway) upon thalamic nuclei and on behaviour. It

Parkinsonism in patients with lucanar infarcts of the basal ganglia.

Forty-five patients with CT findings of lucanar infarcts in the basal ganglia (LIBG) were included in this study. The patients were divided into those with lacunes in the caudate nucleus, lentiform nucleus or both caudate and lentiform nuclei. Linear measurements of ventricular spaces were also performed. Clinical evaluation disclosed parkinsonism in 17 patients (38%), strokes with contralateral hemiparesis in 14 (31%), while 9 (20%) had both parkinsonism and hemiparesis. The location and number of infarcts did not correlate with the clinical presentation. We conclude that LIBG are commonly as

Lesions of basal ganglia due to disulfiram neurotoxicity.

Three cases of disulfiram induced Parkinsonism and frontal lobe-like syndrome associated with bilateral lesions of the lentiform nuclei on CT scan are reported. Symptoms developed either after an acute high dose of disulfiram (one case) or after several days to weeks of disulfiram treatment (two cases) and persisted over several years in two patients. These observations suggest that basal ganglia are one of the major targets of disulfiram neurotoxicity. The mechanisms of the lesions of basal ganglia may involve carbon disulfide toxicity.

Germ cell tumors of the thalamus and the basal ganglia.

Two cases of germ cell tumors (GCTs) of the basal ganglia are presented and 40 previously reported cases are reviewed. The incidence of GCTs of the basal ganglia and thalamus was estimated as less than 14% of all intracranial GCTs. All patients except for two (95%) were male, aged 7-19 years. The clinical course was usually slow. The major symptoms were hemiparesis, mental deterioration such as dementia or character change, precocious puberty, diabetes insipidus, oculomotor palsy, speech disturbance, and hemianopsia. Signs of intracranial hypertension did not occur until the late stages of the

Zygomycosis of the basal ganglia in intravenous drug users.

Zygomycosis of the basal ganglia should be recognized as a syndrome in intravenous drug users associated with a culture-negative cellular CSF, fever, lethargy, and lesions apparent on contrast-enhanced CT scans of the head. The infection is most likely the result of intravenous inoculation of fungal spores. This entity is different from the rhinocerebral zygomycosis seen with diabetes mellitus and other diseases. In the rhinocerebral form, there are external signs of the disease with involvement of the orbit, paranasal sinuses, and palate. In these drug users, infection was directed to areas d

[The pathomorphology of the superior cervical sympathetic ganglia in burns].

Structural changes of upper cervical sympathetic ganglions of 75 patients who died in different stages of burn disease at the age of 19-85, were studied by neurohistological and neurohistochemical methods. It was determined that neurones change at earlier stages of burn disease begins with their reactivity increase. Later hypertrophy, atrophy and decay of neurones body take place. Sharp cateholamine exhaustion in the structures of upper cervical sympathetic ganglions is also determined during the first days of burn trauma (burn shock stage). Some restoring of mediator stock takes place in subs

Pseudohypoparathyroidism, parkinsonism syndrome, with no basal ganglia calcification.

A 20 year old woman with pseudohypoparathyroidism, Parkinsonism and no basal ganglia calcifications shown by computed tomography is reported. She has typical features of pseudohypoparathyroidism and biochemical evidence of end-organ resistance to parathyroid hormone. She is mentally retarded and has tremor, rigidity, bradykinesia, and stooped posture. The cause of Parkinsonism in pseudohypoparathyroidism is thought to be basal ganglia calcification. This patient must have another pathophysiology, perhaps directly related to a G protein defect, causing impaired neurotransmission.

The incidence of fibrosis in the vestibular ganglia in Menière's disease.

The vestibular ganglia in 11 temporal bones from subjects with known premortem unilateral Meniere's disease were studied for evidence of increased fibrosis. Tissue sections were treated with Gomori's trichrome stain and were examined independently by each of seven persons experienced in histological study. The averaged ratings for the amount of fibrous tissue in the vestibular ganglia showed no significant differences for ears with Meniere's disease, the opposite uninvolved ears, and the controls.

[Pathomorphology of the nodose ganglia of the vagus nerves in burns].

Pathomorphology of ganglion nodosum was studied by means of neurohistological methods in 65 dead patients during different periods of burn disease and demonstrated a definite dynamic of structural modifications. In period of burn shock there were discovered dystrophic changes and necrosis of neuron separate groups, varicose thickness of a myelin sheath, in period of toxemia hypertrophied neurons with thick axons predominated, in period of septic toxemia and burn exhaustion predominated atrophic changes, necrotic neurons and grain-blockage disintegration of nervous fibres.

ATPases of the cat carotid body and of the neighbouring ganglia.

The average ATPase activity in homogenates of the cat carotid body is found to be 20 nmol Pi liberated per minute per mg fresh tissue weight at 25 degrees C. ATPase activity in the nodose ganglion and the superior cervical ganglion is found in the same range. Most of the activity remains in the supernatant after removal of the mitochondria by centrifugation. The activity is inhibited by ouabain only marginally (ganglia) or not at all (carotid body). In all these organs up to 80% of the activity is seen in the absence of Mg2+ and the presence of increasing concentrations of Ca2+.

Basal ganglia calcifications on CT: relation to hypoparathyroidism.

Eleven of 12 patients with primary hypoparathyroidism had CT evidence of bilateral intracerebral calcifications, mostly within the basal ganglia, but also in other sites. None of the 12 patients with secondary hypoparathyroidism had intracerebral calcifications. Among 20 patients with calcifications discovered incidentally, idiopathic hypoparathyroidism was diagnosed in 2 patients. Four patients had calcifications associated with antiepileptic treatment, parkinsonism, or Kearns-Sayre syndrome. The cause of the calcifications was unknown in 14 patients. No specific neurologic sign was related t

The basal ganglia-circa 1982. A review and commentary.

Our review has shown that recent studies with the new anterograde and retrograde axon transport methods have confirmed and extended our knowledge of the projection of the basal ganglia and clarified their sites of origin. They have thrown new light on certain topographic connectional relationships and revealed several new reciprocal connections between constituent nuclei of the basal ganglia. Similarly, attention has been drawn to the fact that there have also been many new histochemical techniques introduced in recent years that are now providing regional biochemical overlays for connectional

[Basocellular epithelioma of the back with metastases of the axillary ganglia].

In a 52-year old woman, basal cell carcinoma of the back skin recurs after excision and the axillary lymph nodes are involved. This case is to be added to the list of basal cell carcinomas with metastatic evolution. The histologic study of a series of sections allows to show the migration of neoplastic cells in the vessels. Though exceptional, the ability of the basal cell carcinomas to yield metastases must be taken into account.

Movements of radioactive potassium in isolated rat ganglia.

1. Isolated rat superior cervical ganglia were continuously superfused with (42)K (or (86)Rb) solution and the amount of radioactivity taken up was monitored using scintillation counting.2. Entry of (42)K into the ganglia could be resolved into two components, one amounting to 83% of the total (42)K uptake, with a rate constant of 0.015 min(-1), and the other of 17% of the total, with a rate constant of 0.15 min(-1).3. With 6 mM-K in the bathing solution, the equilibrium uptake of (42)K after 4 hr corresponded to an intracellular concentration of 147 mM-K. Changes in the K concentration of the

Dense core mitochondria in peripheral ganglia of man.

Neuronal perikarye of peripheral ganglia contained unusual dense core mitochondria that were not seen in other cell types or tissues of the same individual. They were found in several patients autopsied with GM1-gangliosidosis and neuronal ceroid-lipofuscinosis. Previous observations on human sympathetic ganglia, obtained by biopsy, and our findings suggest that these dense core mitochondria might represent a rare but regular feature of neuronal perikarya in peripheral ganglia of man.
