The results of a seasonal study of the regulation by steroids of ovine pineal beta-adrenoceptors are reported. The effects of ovariectomy, steroid implants and superior cervical ganglionectomy were investigated in Merino ewes. The results confirm earlier observations showing a seasonal variation in the sensitivity of the receptors to modification by gonadal steroids. A marked difference in receptor density and affinity between the follicular and luteal phases of the estrous cycle is shown for the first time, a difference which can be modified by appropriate steroid-related treatments. Neurosurgical procedures such as the dorsal root entry zone operation, ganglionectomy, and spinal-cord stimulation have been offered to patients with intractable post-herpetic neuralgia (PHN). This report documents the treatment of 33 foot and ankle ganglia. The average patient age was 39 years (versus 25 years for patients with ganglia about the wrist joint). Twenty-one ganglia were treated operatively and nine recurred. Three patients suffered cutaneous nerve injury. The other 12 ganglia were treated by aspiration and steroid injection. OBJECTIVE: To characterize, for the first time, periosteal new bone formation in a well-established canine model of accelerated osteoarthritis (OA) with features of neuropathic arthropathy.
METHODS: Seven dogs underwent left L4-S1 dorsal root ganglionectomy (DRG), followed 3 weeks later by transection of the anterior cruciate ligament of the ipsilateral knee (ACLT). This study was performed to analyse the cochlear concentrations of serotonin (5-HT) and 5-hydroxyindole-3-acetic acid (5-HIAA), their sources and modifications induced by noise exposure. Superior cervical ganglionectomy did not modify these concentrations. However, removal of the blood by aortic perfusion reduced significantly (about 76%) the cochlear concentration of 5-HT without affecting the 5-HIAA concentration.
