More than Garden Variety: Massive Vegetations from Infective Endocarditis.

Infective endocarditis classically involves non-sterile vegetations on valvular surfaces in the heart. Feared complications include embolization and acute heart failure. Surgical intervention achieves source control and alleviates valvular regurgitation in complicated cases. Vegetations >1 cm are often intervened upon, making massive vegetations uncommon in modern practice. We report the case of a 39-year-old female with history of intravenous drug abuse who presented with a serpiginous vegetation on the native tricuspid valve and methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus bacteremia. The veg

Impact of Nurses Taking Daily Work Breaks in a Hospital Garden on Burnout.

BACKGROUND: Nurses working in hospital environments are at risk for burnout. Exposure to nature has psychological benefits, but the effect of hospital gardens on nurse burnout is less understood. OBJECTIVE: To compare the effect on nurse burnout of taking daily work breaks in a hospital-integrated garden with the effect of indoor-only breaks. METHODS: A prospective crossover trial was conducted of nurses assigned to either 6 weeks of a work break in an outdoor hospital garden or 6 weeks of indoor-only breaks. After a 1-week washout period, break assignments were switched for a subsequent 6 w

Allergic bronchopulmonary aspergillosis in garden waste (compost) collectors--occupational implications.

The separation of rotting garden material from general domestic waste and its collection for processing in industrial composting sites is a relatively new industry in the UK. Two cases of allergic bronchopulmonary aspergillosis and the results of health surveillance are described in a team of 28 garden waste (compost) collectors. A few cases of extrinsic allergic alveolitis due to Aspergillus fumigatus have previously been reported in compost workers. In the absence of any guidance from research and to prevent similar cases of a potentially serious illness, we advise that new starters to the j

[Toxic contact dermatitis from poison ivy in a private garden in Germany].

A couple suffered for 5 years from recurrent eruptions with vesicles and bullae after contact with an unknown "climbing weed" in their private garden in Germany. After this plant was identified as poison ivy and eradicated, their skin problems were solved. This is the first report of poison ivy in this setting. Urushiols in poison ivy are not only strong allergens but also potent irritants. Negative patch tests in the husband suggest that the bullous dermatitis was a toxic reaction.

Characteristics of garden dormice that contribute to their capacity as reservoirs for lyme disease spirochetes.

To describe the contribution of garden dormice to the epizootiology of Lyme disease, we compared their reservoir capacity for these pathogens to that of other sympatric hosts. Garden dormice are trapped most abundantly during early spring and again during midsummer, when their offspring forage. They are closely associated with moist forests. Garden dormice serve as hosts to nymphal ticks far more frequently than do other small mammals. Spirochetal infection is most prevalent in dormice, and many more larval ticks acquire infection in the course of feeding on these than on other rodents in the

Occupational dermatitis in Danish gardeners and greenhouse workers (II). Etiological factors.

The aim of the study was to assess the distribution of different types of occupational eczema among employees in floristry and detect the allergens most commonly involved. Based on a postal questionnaire, 253 gardeners and greenhouse workers with occupational skin symptoms and 52 randomly-selected without symptoms were examined and patch tested. Routine tests comprised the standard series, the Compositae mix, feverfew and 3 fungicides, with additional testing based on case records. 184 persons from the symptom group and 1 from the random group had occupational eczema. Olfactory Basis of Homing Behavior in the Giant Garden Slug, Limax maximus.

Time lapse photography of slugs living in an experimental enclosure shows that these animals can return to a homesite from over 90 cm by a direct route. Slime trail following and vision are not involved in this behavior. In the presence of a low velocity wind, homing occurs upwind. Surgical disconnection of the presumptive olfactory apparatus (digitate ganglion) from the central nervous system eliminates homing. Neurophysiological recordings from the receptor surface associated with the digitate ganglion and the olfactory nerve demonstrate the olfactory function of the digitate ganglion. The o

A comparison of metal concentrations in vegetables from urban community gardens and groceries in response to community research.

Farmers in urban community gardens (UCGs) grow a variety of vegetables to have access to nutritious food that may be scarce, to enjoy the benefits of nature, and as political resistance to numerous forms of environmental injustice. These injustices are many and include food deserts, contamination, lack of green spaces, and loss of connection to land. To subvert these injustices, many community farmers choose to grow their own produce rather than to purchase produce from grocery stores. As part of an ongoing study on contamination in UCGs, partnering farmers asked our research team to analyze t

Tricks of Nature From the Ancient Earth and Early Mars: Chemical Gardens Generate Biomorphs With High Preservation Potential.

Observations of morphology are commonly used to evaluate the biogenicity of terrestrial microfossils and could constitute a crucial line of evidence for extraterrestrial life-detection missions in the future. However, evaluating the origin of morphological features in the rock record can be problematic because naturally occurring abiotic structures can resemble biological morphologies, which may lead to false-positive detections of fossilised life. Iron-mineralised chemical gardens have been highlighted as potentially confounding abiotic structures because of their morphological and chemical r

The Flowery Stations Contest in Early Twentieth-Century Italy: Railway Gardens and the Case Study of Ripafratta (Tuscany).

Urban green areas are essential for human well-being, biodiversity, and environmental sustainability. Although railway renewal projects are celebrated today, Italy pioneered the Flowery Stations Contest (FSC) in the early twentieth century. This study provides the first comprehensive synthesis of the FSC experience (1911-1915), investigating its historical evolution, organizational features, and botanical aspects. A systematic review of 81 historical documents was conducted to reconstruct the contest's framework. To evaluate long-term impact, we surveyed 90 historically top-ranked stations via

Women's awareness, knowledge, attitudes, and behaviours towards nutrition and health in Pakistan: Evaluation of kitchen gardens nutrition program.

INTRODUCTION: Vulnerability to malnutrition is very high with low-income women and their children in rural Balochistan with contributing factors including lack of awareness about proper nutrition, low literacy, scarcity of vegetables and fruit, and low purchasing power of households. The Food and Agriculture Organization's kitchen garden program provides resources to improve nutrition and health knowledge and promote healthy eating practices. The objective of this study was to assess nutrition and health awareness, knowledge, attitudes, behavioural intentions/behaviours (AKAB) of women who att

Nutrient Removal by Halloysite-Amended Mineral Matrices and Heavy Metal Retention in Rain Gardens Under Dynamic Hydraulic Flow Conditions.

Rain gardens are widely used for stormwater treatment; however, the performance of alternative sorbent materials under varying rainfall conditions remains insufficiently understood. In this study, the removal of nutrients and heavy metals was evaluated in laboratory-scale rain gardens amended with halloysite of two grain size fractions (1-2 mm and 2-4 mm) under rainfall events lasting 30 and 120 min. Three column systems were tested: a reference column containing dolomite, sand, and gravel (C1), and two halloysite-amended columns (C2 and C3). Synthetic stormwater containing N-NH4+, N-NO3-, P-P

Ecological legacy of Indigenous dispossession: disruption of ancestral sea gardens by commercial clam fisheries in British Columbia, 1882-1985.

Ancestral sea gardens in British Columbia (BC) were managed to provide high long-term yields for millennia before European contact. While the ubiquity and productivity of sea gardens are well known, the ecological and cultural impact of the transition from ancestral to settler-colonial fisheries has not been investigated in a historical ecology context. Here, we examine that transition in the BC clam fishery, documenting the social and legal mechanisms used to dispossess Indigenous clam harvesters and identifying the ecological impacts of settler-colonial fisheries. Our results document a rapi

Inoculation of Priestia megaterium confers drought tolerance to garden pea (Pisum sativum).

A pot experiment was conducted to evaluate the potential of six PGP microbial isolates (FM20, FM65, FM19, W22, OF5, and Control) to mitigate the adverse effects of drought stress (40% FC) on pea (Pisum sativum) compared to normal irrigation (80% FC). The results demonstrated that PGP inoculants significantly enhanced physiological, ionic, and yield parameters under both normal and stress conditions consistently outperforming the uninoculated control. Under drought stress, W22 maintained the highest Relative Water Content (88.5%), statistically similar to several normal treatments, indicating s

Unveiling human-nature interaction: Qualitative exploration of perceived benefits of urban gardening.

The study seeks to provide insights into the subjective experiences and perceived benefits of urban gardening by gardeners in the city of Belgrade. It encompassed several forms of urban gardens, both collective and individual. The study involved conducting semi-structured interviews with 44 gardeners, supplemented by field observations. Thematic analysis revealed seven key themes of benefits. The findings slightly diverged from studies in developed countries, demonstrating less emphasis on the social aspects of urban gardening, as participants did not view social interaction as a primary motiv
