Contributions of placodal and neural crest cells to avian cranial peripheral ganglia.

The method of embryonic tissue transplantation was used to confirm the dual origin of avian cranial sensory ganglia, to map precise locations of the anlagen of these sensory neurons, and to identify placodal and neural crest-derived neurons within ganglia. Segments of neural crest or strips of presumptive placodal ectoderm were excised from chick embryos and replaced with homologous tissues from quail embryos, whose cells contain a heterochromatin marker. Placode-derived neurons associated with cranial nerves V, VII, IX, and X are located distal to crest-derived neurons. The generally larger,

Facial Nerve Hemangioma: Radiological Findings and a Review of the Literature.

Facial nerve hemangioma is a rare vascular lesion of the temporal bone, most frequently arising from the geniculate ganglion of the facial nerve. Imaging plays a pivotal role in its detection and characterization, and the combination of computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) may allow the diagnosis based on suggestive radiologic features. We report a case of a middle-aged female with a facial nerve hemangioma diagnosed through CT and MRI, emphasizing the main imaging findings and their correlation with previously published descriptions in the literature.

[Not Available].

Ramsay Hunt syndrome (RHS) is an infection with the Varicella Zoster virus in the geniculate ganglion of the facial nerve. The syndrome consists of a triad of peripheral facial nerve palsy, ear pain and concurrent zoster rash in the ear canal. However, vesicles in the mouth can be seen. A rare complication of RHS is viral meningitis. This is a case report of a patient with orally manifested RHS and concurrent asymptomatic viral meningitis. This case aims to raise awareness of RHS with atypical presentation and concurrent viral meningitis and, thereby, the importance of a thorough neurological

Use of a tissue clearing technique combined with retrograde trans-synaptic viral tracing to evaluate changes in mouse retinorecipient brain regions following optic nerve crush.

Successful establishment of reconnection between retinal ganglion cells and retinorecipient regions in the brain is critical to optic nerve regeneration. However, morphological assessments of retinorecipient regions are limited by the opacity of brain tissue. In this study, we used an innovative tissue cleaning technique combined with retrograde trans-synaptic viral tracing to observe changes in retinorecipient regions connected to retinal ganglion cells in mice after optic nerve injury. Specifically, we performed light-sheet imaging of whole brain tissue after a clearing process. We found tha

The role of the middle fossa approach in the management of traumatic facial paralysis.

There are several controversial aspects to the management of traumatic facial paralysis. One of these involves the precise nature of surgical intervention once the decision to operate has been made. Between June 1, 1984, and June 30, 1993, we surgically treated 220 cases of traumatic facial paralysis with good cochlear reserve by decompressing the tympanic and mastoid segments via a transmastoid approach followed by decompression of the geniculate ganglion and the distal half of the labyrinthine segment via a middle fossa approach. We discuss the results of surgery via the middle fossa approac

[Ramsay Hunt syndrome--differential diagnosis, pathogenesis and therapy].

Ramsay Hunt syndrome is caused by infection of the geniculate ganglion of the seventh cranial nerve by varicella-zoster virus. A case in an 82-year-old woman is described. She presented with oral lesions, right facial palsy and an eruption and pain in her right ear. Oral examination revealed small circumscribed erosions on the right anterior two-thirds of the tongue, with loss of taste. There were also lesions on her right palate. Early diagnosis and treatment are important as immediate treatment is more likely to prevent irreversible complications affecting the facial and other cranial nerves

Facial nerve enhancement in Gd-MRI in patients with Bell's palsy.

The diagnostic value of a contrast enhanced MRI in patients with Bell's palsy was investigated. It was a characteristic finding that the internal acoustic meatal segment of the facial nerve was enhanced only on the affected side. The signal intensity ratio of the geniculate ganglion and the tympanic segment was significantly higher on the affected side than on the normal side. The severity of the facial palsy and the results of physiological examinations showed no relation to the results of MRI scans. Gd enhanced MRI thus appears to provide some useful findings for estimating the affected regi

Medical management of idiopathic (Bell's) palsy.

Experience with treating more than 400 cases of Antoni's palsy, the findings of autoimmune reaction, and recent gadolinium-enhanced magnetic resonance imaging reports in "idiopathic" Bell's palsy verify the hypothesis that the disease results from a viral geniculate ganglionitis. The diagnosis no longer needs to be one of exclusion. We now are capable of establishing a positive diagnosis, permitting the clinician to initiate treatment with corticosteroids and acyclovir confidently. Facial nerve compression and electrotherapy are not advised. It is suggested that the term idiopathic Bell's pals

Intratemporal schwannoma of the facial nerve.

Two patients with schwannomas that originated from the region of the geniculate ganglion of the facial nerve are reported. They presented with progressive facial nerve paralysis and variable disturbance of hearing. Computed tomograms demonstrated a mass lesion eroding the temporal bone (petrous portion) and extending into the middle fossa. The treatment consisted of complete excision of the tumor, and a hypoglossal-facial nerve anastomosis. Computed tomography should be performed on all patients with facial palsy of a progressive nature. Early diagnosis and surgical treatment of facial schwann

Resection of a Dumbbell-Shaped Facial Nerve Schwannoma With Preservation of Facial Nerve Function Through the Extended Middle Fossa Approach: 2-Dimensional Operative Video.

Facial nerve schwannomas are rare and can arise from any segment along the course of the facial nerve.1 Their location and growth patterns present as distinct groups that warrant specific surgical management and approaches.2 The management challenge arises when the facial nerve maintains good function (House-Brackmann grade I-II).3 Hence, a prime goal of management is to maintain good facial animation. In large tumors, however, resection with facial nerve function preservation should be sought and is achievable.4,5  While tumors originating from the geniculate ganglion grow extradural on the f

SARS-CoV-19-associated Rhino-orbital and cerebral mucormycosis: clinical and radiological presentations.

We describe presenting clinical and imaging manifestations of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus-2 (SARS-CoV-2)-associated Rhino-oculo-cerebral mucormycosis (ROCM) in a hospital setting during the second wave of SARS-CoV-2 pandemic in India. Data on the presenting manifestations were collected from 1 March to 31 May 2021. Associations between clinical and imaging findings were explored, specifically: (1) the presence or absence of orbital pain and infiltration of a superior orbital fissure on imaging; (2) the presence of unilateral facial nerve palsy and pterygopalatine fossa infilt

Endoscopic transcanal facial nerve decompression in Bell's palsy: A pilot study.

PURPOSE: To explore the surgical effects of endoscopic facial nerve decompression in Bell's palsy. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This retrospective study included 15 patients with Bell's palsy. All had grade VI (House-Brackmann grading system) complete unilateral facial paralysis before surgery and a >95% reduction in amplitude on electroneurography testing compared to the unaffected side. Their MRI results indicated perineural edema in the geniculate ganglion area. Endoscopic decompression surgery was performed soon after they presented at our hospital. The time between onset of facial paralysis an

Reactivation of type 1 herpes simplex virus and varicella zoster virus in an immunosuppressed patient with acute peripheral facial weakness.

We describe a 26-year-old man treated with azathioprine for myasthenia gravis who developed acute left-sided peripheral facial weakness. Brain magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) revealed enhancement in the left geniculate ganglion and in the intracanalicular and tympanic segments of the facial nerve. Analysis of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) and serum revealed intrathecal synthesis of anti-varicella zoster virus (VZV) IgG antibody. Although previous analyses of saliva, blood mononuclear cells, serum antibodies, middle ear fluid, and auricular and geniculate zone skin scrapings have shown that a smal

Facial nerve stimulation following cochlear implantation for X-linked stapes gusher syndrome leading to identification of a novel POU3F4 mutation.

We report a case of a nine-year-old male who presented with facial nerve stimulation four years after cochlear implantation. Computed tomography was performed revealing a dilated internal auditory meatus and the cochlear implant electrode was found to be protruding into the fallopian canal at the level of the geniculate ganglion. Subsequent genetic analysis demonstrated X-linked deafness type 2 (DFNX2) caused by a novel c.769C > T nucleotide change in the POU domain, class 3, transcription factor 4 gene (POU3F4). Inactivation of electrodes 1 and 19-21 successfully abated facial nerve stimulati

Facial nerve enhancement in MR imaging.

The significance of facial nerve enhancement after IV gadolinium administration has not been determined. We evaluated the MR appearance of facial nerves (nonenhanced and enhanced) in patients without and with masses involving the temporal bone, internal auditory canal, or cerebellopontine angle. In patients without such masses, no facial nerve enhancement was seen. In the other group, four of 11 patients showed facial nerve enhancement and geniculate ganglion masses. Three of these four patients had neurofibromatosis; one had surgical verification of a facial nerve neurofibroma. Enhanced MR fa

Motor and sensory centers for the innervation of mandibular and sublingual salivary glands: a horseradish peroxidase study in the dog.

Horeradish peroxidase was injected at multiple sites in the mandibular and sublingual salivary glands in order to label the preganglionic salivatory neurons in the brain stem. The same injections resulted in retrograde labeling of the sympathetic and sensory neurons that project to these glands. Labeled fusiform and multipolar salivatory neurons were found ipsilaterally in the lateral reticular formation of the medulla where they extended over the rostral four-fifths of the facial nucleus and the caudal one-third of the dorsal nucleus of the trapezoid body. The vast majority of the small and m

Semaphorin-6D and Plexin-A1 Act in a Non-Cell-Autonomous Manner to Position and Target Retinal Ganglion Cell Axons.

Semaphorins and Plexins form ligand/receptor pairs that are crucial for a wide range of developmental processes from cell proliferation to axon guidance. The ability of semaphorins to act both as signaling receptors and ligands yields a multitude of responses. Here, we describe a novel role for Semaphorin-6D (Sema6D) and Plexin-A1 in the positioning and targeting of retinogeniculate axons. In Plexin-A1 or Sema6D mutant mice of either sex, the optic tract courses through, rather than along, the border of the dorsal lateral geniculate nucleus (dLGN), and some retinal axons ectopically arborize a

Ramsey hunt syndrome after antimonial treatment for American Cutaneous Leishmaniasis.

Ramsay Hunt Syndrome (RHS), also known as herpes zoster oticus, is caused by the reactivation of varicella zoster virus (VZV) in the geniculate ganglion of the facial nerve. Herein, we report a case of Ramsey Hunt Syndrome in a patient after antimonial treatment for Cutaneous Leishmaniasis. The patient presented with microvesicles grouped on an erythematous base, starting in the neck and ascending towards the scalp margin on the right side of the head. The patient also developed grade V peripheral facial palsy the day after initiating the herpes zoster treatment, this outcome corroborated the

[Ramsay Hunt syndrome and current approaches].

Ramsay Hunt syndrome (RHS) is a disease characterized by acute peripheric facial paralysis, vesicular eruptions on the auricular skin and severe ear pain caused by reactivation of latent Varicella zoster virus in the geniculate ganglion. In addition to clinical findings, the diagnosis is confirmed with the presence of viral DNA in the involved tissue and vesicular exudate, as assessed by polymerase chain reaction. Corticosteroids for their anti-inflammatory effects and antiviral agents for their anti-replicative effects on viral load are used as the first-line therapy. However, there is a limi
