Evaluation of oral health education programs for oral health of individuals with visual impairment: An umbrella review.

AIM: To exemplify, summarize and critically appraise the systematic reviews (SRs) that evaluated different oral health education (OHE) interventions in individuals with visual impairment (VI). METHODOLOGY: Six electronic databases were searched for SRs evaluating OHE programs in individuals with VI. The internal validity of the included SRs was evaluated using the Assessing the Methodological Quality of Systematic Reviews-2 (AMSTAR-2) tool. The degree of overlap of the primary studies in the included SRs was calculated using the "corrected covered area (CCA)" approach. RESULTS: Seven SRs wer

A case of conversion disorder presenting as chronic trismus.

Trismus can be the symptom of several diseases. For the most part, the inability to open the mouth is due to an articular disorder but occasionally, the cause may be extra-articular. In this case, being reported, non-articular hysterical trismus caused the jaw to lock in an 11-year-old boy for 3 months. During this period the jaw was completely locked and the locking was associated with moderate to severe pain. After three sessions of therapy the patient was able to open his mouth 33 mm and his eating was back to normal. Conversion disorders often present with dramatic physical presentation in

Identifying people requiring special care dentistry: A scoping review.

AIMS: This scoping review aimed to document tools designed to identify persons requiring special care dentistry (SCD) and to provide a better understanding of the factors that justify adaptation in the provision of care. METHODS: A scoping review methodology was applied. An electronic search was performed in April 2021 using Pubmed and Embase. Additional tools were sought using hand searches and informal professional networking. RESULTS: Ten tools were identified that either predict the complexity of dental management or that retrospectively judge the complexity of care, of which two are as

The challenging management of Moebius syndrome using orthodontic camouflage: A case report.

Moebius syndrome (MS) is a rare congenital neuromuscular disorder characterized by weakness or paralysis (palsy) of abducens and facial nerves, or other cranial nerves which may be affected. Diagnosis, treatment, and dental management of MS patients are focused on treating manifestations like malocclusion, while catering to associated extraoral (neurologic, dermatologic, ocular) complications, aiming to improve their quality of life. Here, we report the case of a 9-year-old female patient with MS who underwent orthodontic camouflage using combined orthopedic-orthodontic therapy using a high-pu

Structural-visual approach for dental examination in children with autism spectrum disorder: A systematic review.

INTRODUCTION: Conducting Dental examination in children with autism is challenging due to the limitation in cooperativeness that is caused by impairment of communication, social interaction, and sensory sensitivities. AIMS: This study aims to provide evidence base for the structural-visual approach in reducing uncooperativeness behavior to dental care in children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). METHODS: Searches were conducted in the electronic databases PubMed, PsycINFO, and Cochrane from inception to October 2021 (CRD42022383409). Randomized controlled trials (RCTs), non-RCTs, and pre

Gingival metastasis of angiosarcoma of the breast as a first manifestation of spreading disease: Case report and review of the literature.

BACKGROUND: Angiosarcoma is an aggressive malignant neoplasm of vascular origin. Oral metastases of angiosarcoma are rare and have a non-specific clinical presentation, thus the diagnosis may be challenging. CASE REPORT: Herein we report a case of a 34-year-old female patient after treatment of a high-grade angiosarcoma of the breast, who presented an asymptomatic bleeding purplish nodule in the maxillary interdental papilla between the first and second premolar. A biopsy was performed, and the histological examination revealed infiltration by malignant neoplasm of epithelioid and fusocellula

The aim of the present study was to identify the conditions necessary for maintaining food texture for this population. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The study included 143 people for whom reevaluation 1-year post-baseline was possible from among 256 dependent older people who consumed solid food on admission to a nursing home (baseline). The age, sex, primary disease, activities of daily living, nutritional status, oral status, swallowing ability,

Outcomes of minimal oral sedation in patients treated in a dental school setting: A retrospective study.

INTRODUCTION: Minimal sedation (Anxiolysis) is used in dentistry to reduce stress, manage anxiety, and improve patient comfort during treatment. The oral route of minimal sedation is safe and convenient, but there is limited literature assessing the efficacy of this mode of patient care. This paper aims to evaluate the outcomes of oral sedation use for patients treated in a dental school setting using a retrospective cohort analysis of electronic health record data. METHODS: A total of 6872 patient records were selected after screening through the selection criteria. Demographic and treatment

Incidental detection of bilateral cochlear implants on panoramic radiography: Case report associated with antecedent traumatic brain injury.

Patients with chronic and severe hearing loss, refractory to nonsurgically-worn devices, may consider use of cochlear implants to regain auditory capability. Cochlear implants consist of surgically emplaced and externally worn components. There are few published examples of the radiographic presentation of these devices appearing in the special needs-based dental literature. This article features a case report and panoramic radiographic examination involving a 67-year-old patient who received bilateral cochlear implants after experiencing a traumatic brain injury and onset loss of hearing. Bruxism is one of the most common oral and psychophysiological disorders, that is still an unsolved issue with limited data. OBJECTIVES: The purpose of this systematic review (SR) was to evaluate evidence about bruxism and its management in individuals with ASD and DS. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The researchers performed an electronic search using keywords on three databases, reference lists and complemented by manual searching from January 2000 to February 2

Evidence-based analysis of multi-pronged approaches for education and behavior management of autistic patients in a dental setting.

BACKGROUND: Autism spectrum disorder is a neurodevelopmental condition which has posed a challenge to carers, pediatricians and dentists through the years. Over the last four decades, the disorder has been better understood and management techniques have evolved. In the field of dentistry, the autistic child presents difficulty in management, even for the simplest dental procedures. A comprehensive understanding of other psychoeducational and behavioral approaches to manage autism is very important. This article aims to introduce various important key techniques such as Applied Behavior Analys

Using machine learning algorithms to investigate factors associated with complete edentulism among older adults in the United States.

AIMS: Edentulism is an incapacitating condition, and its prevalence is unequal among different population groups in the United States (US) despite its declining prevalence. This study aimed to investigate the current prevalence, apply Machine Learning (ML) Algorithms to investigate factors associated with complete tooth loss among older US adults, and compare the performance of the models. METHODS: The cross-sectional 2020 Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (BRFSS) data was used to evaluate the prevalence and factors associated with edentulism. ML models were developed to identify fac

OBJECTIVE: We report the orthodontic treatment of a class II malocclusion with anterior open bite and posterior crossbite in a patient with Down syndrome (DS) treated with mini-implants. METHODS: Treatment began with rapid maxillary expansion with a Haas appliance, followed by dental alignment and leveling with a fixed appliance and the correction of class II dental relationships with the use of orthodontic mini-implants associated with a sliding jig. RESULTS: The results obtained at the end of the treatment were satisfactory, with improvements in occlusion, including bite closure; maxillary
