Evolution of the biomechanical dimension of the professional gestures of grinders when using a collaborative robot.

Using a cobot could relieve workers of strenuous and repetitive tasks while preserving their expertise. To understand the consequences of using a cobot on the occurrence of musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs), within a theoretical framework based on activity-centred ergonomics, an example cobot used in grinding activities in a real work situation is studied. This article analyses the evolution of the biomechanical dimension of the professional gestures of grinders when using the cobot. Effort linked to tool carrying and the vibrations perceived were reduced. Repetitiveness decreased but workers d

Phenotyping features in the genesis of pre-scriptural gestures in children to assess handwriting developmental levels.

Acquiring writing skills is a long developmental process that is conditioned by both the mastery of the gesture and the spatio-temporal arrangement of characters across the page. While the researches in the literature mainly focused on spatio-temporal and kinematics parameters of tracing letters or words using digitizing tablets, no recent research has previously studied the developmental prerequisites of the organization of handwriting useful for clinical assessment and remediation. Aims of the present study was to investigate and validate the phenotyping of the developmental genesis of pre-s

Analysing Touchscreen Gestures: A Study Based on Individuals with Down Syndrome Centred on Design for All.

There has been a conscious shift towards developing increasingly inclusive applications. However, despite this fact, most research has focused on supporting those with visual or hearing impairments and less attention has been paid to cognitive impairments. The purpose of this study is to analyse touch gestures used for touchscreens and identify which gestures are suitable for individuals living with Down syndrome (DS) or other forms of physical or cognitive impairments. With this information, app developers can satisfy Design for All (DfA) requirements by selecting adequate gestures from exist

Hand Gestures Facilitate the Acquisition of Novel Phonemic Contrasts When They Appropriately Mimic Target Phonetic Features.

Purpose Research has shown that observing hand gestures mimicking pitch movements or rhythmic patterns can improve the learning of second language (L2) suprasegmental features. However, less is known about the effects of hand gestures on the learning of novel phonemic contrasts. This study examines (a) whether hand gestures mimicking phonetic features can boost L2 segment learning by naive learners and (b) whether a mismatch between the hand gesture form and the target phonetic feature influences the learning effect. Method Fifty Catalan native speakers undertook a short multimodal training se

Dissociating neural correlates of meaningful emblems from meaningless gestures in deaf signers and hearing non-signers.

Emblems are meaningful, culturally-specific hand gestures that are analogous to words. In this fMRI study, we contrasted the processing of emblematic gestures with meaningless gestures by pre-lingually Deaf and hearing participants. Deaf participants, who used American Sign Language, activated bilateral auditory processing and associative areas in the temporal cortex to a greater extent than the hearing participants while processing both types of gestures relative to rest. The hearing non-signers activated a diverse set of regions, including those implicated in the mirror neuron system, such a

Generative AI emotion recognition from bodily gestures and vocal tone reveals modality-specific performance and positivity bias.

Advances in generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) have prompted interest in its application in sensitive fields, including mental health. Yet the validity of its nonverbal social-cognitive abilities remains unclear. This study addresses two issues that probe GenAI's social intelligence: its capacity to interpret nonverbal channels (bodily gestures and vocal tone) with accuracy comparable to humans, and whether accuracy of emotion recognition is different by emotional valence. Emotion recognition accuracy of three Gemini GenAI models (Pro 1.5, Pro 2 (Experimental) and Flash 2) were evaluat

Temporal Coordination of Articulatory Gestures in Nonnative Onset Clusters: Evidence From American English Speakers Using Electromagnetic Articulography.

PURPOSE: Research in cross-language speech production indicates that, although the production of nonnative consonant clusters is often difficult, speakers of American English can produce some nonnative clusters (e.g., /fn/) with high accuracy. This ease of production for select nonnative clusters may occur due to similarity of phonetic structure with native clusters (e.g., nonnative /fn/ and native /sm/ are both fricative-nasal sequences). The current study tested this hypothesis by examining the extent of transfer of articulatory coordination from phonetically similar native onset clusters (i

Why is she scratching her head? Children's understanding of others' metacognitive gestures as an indicator of learning.

Successful collaborative learning is supported by the coordination of one's own learning with the learning performance of others. One type of cues that guides the understanding of others' learning performances is their metacognitive gestures. In the current study, we investigated (a) whether 3- to 7-year-old children rely on others' gestures to judge someone else's learning progress and likely learning performance (Experiment 1; N = 76), (b) whether metacognitive gesture understanding depends on cognitive and theory of mind skills (Experiment 2; N = 59), and (c) whether this knowledge would in

Differential roles of gestures on spatial language in neurotypical elderly adults and individuals with focal brain injury.

Gestures might serve communicative functions by supplementing spoken expressions or restorative functions by facilitating speech production. Also, speakers with speech deficits use gestures to compensate for their speech impairments. In this study, we examined gesture use in speakers with and without speech impairments and how spoken spatial expressions changed when gestures were restrained. Six patients with speech problems and with left frontal and/or temporal lesions and 20 neurotypical controls described motion events in 3 different conditions (spontaneous gesture, only speech, and only ge

Neural correlates of conflict between gestures and words: A domain-specific role for a temporal-parietal complex.

The interpretation of social cues is a fundamental function of human social behavior, and resolution of inconsistencies between spoken and gestural cues plays an important role in successful interactions. To gain insight into these underlying neural processes, we compared neural responses in a traditional color/word conflict task and to a gesture/word conflict task to test hypotheses of domain-general and domain-specific conflict resolution. In the gesture task, recorded spoken words ("yes" and "no") were presented simultaneously with video recordings of actors performing one of the following

Prevalence of and risk factors for suicide attempts versus suicide gestures: analysis of the National Comorbidity Survey.

Definitions and classification schemes for suicide attempts vary widely among studies, introducing conceptual, methodological, and clinical problems. We tested the importance of the intent to die criterion by comparing self-injurers with intent to die, suicide attempters, and those who self-injured not to die but to communicate with others, suicide gesturers, using data from the National Comorbidity Survey (n = 5,877). Suicide attempters (prevalence = 2.7%) differed from suicide gesturers (prevalence = 1.9%) and were characterized by male gender, fewer years of education, residence in the sout

Patterns of apraxia associated with the production of intransitive limb gestures following left and right hemisphere stroke.

The model of apraxia proposed by Roy (1996) states that three patterns of apraxia should be observed across pantomime and imitation conditions. In the present analysis the frequency and severity of each pattern of apraxia were examined in a consecutive sample of left-(LHD) and right-hemisphere-damaged (RHD) patients during the production of intransitive limb gestures. The results indicated that a significant proportion of LHD and RHD patients were selectively impaired in formulating the ideational component of intransitive limb gestures.

Effectiveness of delayed feedback on the accuracy of teaching communicative gestures to individuals with severe mental retardation.

Trainer behavior has been neglected as an area of applied research. Feedback has been demonstrated as potentially effective to increase the accuracy of behavior of teachers, parents, ward-staff members, and other service providers in the area of mental retardation. In this study, we assessed the effect of delayed feedback on the accuracy of training given by four trainers during one-to-one sessions. Trainees were four individuals with severe mental retardation, who were taught communicative gestures. The results, gathered within a multiple baseline design across dyads of trainers and trainees,

Transdiagnostic associations between subjective gesture behaviour and objective performance in schizophrenia and depression.

Social communication deficits are common across mental-health disorders, yet little is known about how individuals perceive their own gesture behaviours. Gaining insight into this, particularly across different disorders, could enhance our understanding of social communicative impairments and disruptions in self-awareness. The current study included 274 participants: N = 113 with schizophrenia, N = 65 with depression and N = 96 healthy controls where we compared self-reported gesture behaviours in social and non-social contexts. These self-reports where further explored in relation to objectiv

Efficient material selection for training occluded mmWave radar-based gesture recognisers.

Radar-based gesture recognition has emerged as a promising approach for unobtrusive interaction. Unlike camera-based systems, radar sensors can detect gestures through opaque materials, enabling seamless embedding into various everyday objects. However, it remains unclear how to train models efficiently for robust gesture recognition through diverse materials. To investigate this, we collected a dataset of 17,520 gesture recordings performed through 73 everyday materials. By comparing several material-sampling and data-augmentation strategies, we found that a small carefully selected represent

Parental speech and gesture scaffolding moderate the neural dynamics of parent-child synchrony.

Parent-child interactions foster children's neurocognitive development through multiple pathways. A key pathway involves parental scaffolding, in which parents use speech, gesture, or their combination multimodally to guide children's problem solving and learning. However, the neural processes underlying different scaffolding modalities remain largely unknown. In the present study, we examined the neural basis for the role of parental scaffolding during a parent-child cooperative spatial problem-solving task. We characterized three different types of scaffolds parents used, specifically speech

Evaluation of Hand Gesture Classification Based on Motor Units Activation for Prosthetic Application.

Recent advancements in upper-limb prosthetics have enabled users to control multi-degree-of-freedom prostheses using pattern recognition algorithms applied to electromyography (EMG). These methods are built on the extraction of EMG features that treat EMG signals as colored noise, neglecting their biological origin. In contrast, recent works have explored the use of features based on the decomposition of EMG signal into the activity of the motor units. These features hold great potential for control applications as they reflect the actual neural drive to the muscles. Here, we evaluate the feas

Generalized Cross-Domain Framework for Gesture Recognition via Wrist-Worn Sensing.

Wearable sensing technology offers a natural and convenient means of human-computer interaction, particularly for gesture recognition, yet domain shifts in wrist-worn single-site sensing pose significant challenges for cross-domain gesture recognition. To address this, we proposed a generalized cross-domain framework for fine-grained gesture recognition using wrist-worn single-site sensing. Concretely, we presented a Multi-Branch Network, which combines feature-level multimodal fusion with enhanced inter-modal interaction to effectively capture fine-grained gestures. To this end, we constructe

Accurate Raycasting Selection With Rotation Gesture Using a 6-DOF Tracking Device.

A six degrees of freedom (6-DOF) controller is a commonly used input device in three-dimensional user interface (3DUI) applications. However, for the fundamental task of target selection in 3D space, the selection accuracy decreases owing to the Heisenberg effect during the manipulation of the 6-DOF controller. Based on the pointing action of a 6-DOF device, we establish the mathematical model for raycasting and analyze the possibility of using a rotation gesture to select a target. This study proposes a target selection method using the axial rotation of the user's wrist, which reduces the ne
