We present a hydropic infant who received exogenous surfactant and who had Noonan phenotype with hypertrophic cardiomyopathy. The infant had clinically diagnosed stridor for which bronchoscopy did not identify an origin. He died at 30 days of age. The bronchioles showed numerous eosinophilic plugs with a foreign body giant cell reaction. The plugs were positively immunostained with anti-aposurfactant protein B.

Left ventricular assist devices are increasingly used in patients with advanced heart failure. Gossypiboma and textiloma are terms used to describe tumor-like masses caused by retained gauze or surgical sponges after any operation. It is a rare surgical complication, usually difficult to diagnose due to its variable clinical presentation and nonstandard radiological appearance. We describe here a rare case of orbital gossypiboma in a child after surgical correction of an orbital blowout fracture.

Lobomycosis is a dermal mycosis produced by Loboa loboi. It gives rise to dermal granulomas in which giant cells phagocytose an overwhelming number of fungi. Intracytoplasmatic asteroid bodies (AB) have been observed in some giant cells. Their nature is unknown and they have been confused with the sporotrichotic AB. Immunohistochemical localization of S-100b protein and S-100ao protein in human lymphoreticular system was studied by using monospecific antibody directed against either the alpha subunit or beta subunit of S-100 protein. Osteoclast formation in the microphthalmic osteopetrotic (mi) mouse was studied from very early embryonic to newborn stages. Recent clinical evidence suggests that hylan, a modified hyaluronan, and related products potentially elicit foreign body granulomatous inflammation in human soft tissue. This study examines the histological effects of different sizes of polyethylene particles implanted into the rabbit tibia. Seventeen mature New Zealand white female rabbits were allocated into three groups. Group 1 (5 rabbits) received polyethylene particles averaging approximately 16 microns in diameter, implanted into the right proximal tibia through a drill hole. OBJECTIVE.: A case report of lipogranuloma of the cervix with review of the literature is reported. MATERIALS AND METHODS.: In a 53-year-old woman, an incidental lesion was noted in the cervical biopsy as part of an evaluation for postmenopausal bleeding. RESULTS.: The biopsy revealed a stromal lesion consisting of fat vacuoles with foreign body type giant cells and scattered lymphocytes. CONCLUSION.: Lipogranuloma of the cervix is a rare entity of uncertain etiology that can clinically mimic neoplastic or benign disease.

BACKGROUND: Acute abdominal pain is often easy to be diagnosed because of acute abdomen, and can be treated reasonably and effectively. It is more difficult to establish the cause of chronic abdominal pain, and some patients repeatedly visit several hospitals and still cannot be diagnosed. Chronic abdominal pain caused by chronic appendicitis is such a case. If the degree of abdominal pain is mild and there is no sign of peritonitis, chronic appendicitis is not performed unless the patient requests it.
