Differences in the organization of the primary motor cortex in people with and without low back pain and associations with motor control and sensory tests.

Differences in organization of the primary motor cortex and altered trunk motor control (sensing, processing and motor output) have been reported in people with low back pain (LBP). Little is known to what extent these differences are related. We investigated differences in 1) organization of the primary motor cortex and 2) motor and sensory tests between people with and without LBP, and 3) investigated associations between the organization of the primary motor cortex and motor and sensory tests. We conducted a case-control study in people with (N=25) and without (N=25) LBP. The organization o

Postural balance and the risk of falling during pregnancy.

Pregnancy is a physiological process and many changes occur in a woman's body during pregnancy. These changes occur in all systems to varying degrees, including the cardiovascular, respiratory, genitourinary, and musculoskeletal systems. The hormonal, anatomical, and physiological changes occurring during pregnancy result in weight gain, decreased abdominal muscle strength and neuromuscular control, increased ligamentous laxity, and spinal lordosis. These alterations shift the centre of gravity of the body, altering the postural balance and increasing the risk of falls. Falls during pregnancy

[Smoking and tuberculosis].

Smoking and tuberculosis represent two major world health issues particularly in developing countries. Tobacco smoke increases risk of Mycobaterium tuberculosis infection by several means: alteration of muco-ciliary clearance, reduced alveolar macrophage activity; immune-depression of pulmonary lymphocytes, reduction of cytotoxic activity of natural killer cells, alteration of the activity of the pulmonary dendritic cells. Both active and passive smoking increases the risk of latent tubercular infection and of pulmonary and extra-pulmonary tuberculosis. Active smoking increases the severity of

Physical theory as a basis for successful rotation of fetal malpositions and conversion of fetal malpresentations.

Maternal posturing, in which a pregnant or laboring woman assumes specific postures with the intention of altering the position and/or presentation of the fetus within the uterus, is a safe alternative to operative procedures recommended in cases of fetal malpositions and malpresentations. Clinicians and researchers are more likely to help pregnant women understand and perform posturing correctly if they comprehend the theoretical underpinnings of the technique. In maternal posturing, the forces of gravity and buoyancy combine to form a couple that overcomes frictional forces and/or obstructio

Historical Review of Lower Body Negative Pressure Research in Space Medicine.

Cephalad redistribution of intravascular and extravascular fluid occurs as a result of weightlessness during spaceflight. This provokes cardiovascular, cardiopulmonary, and autonomic nervous system responses. The resulting altered functional state can result in orthostatic hypotension and intolerance upon landing and return to a gravity environment. In-flight lower body negative pressure (LBNP) transiently restores normal body fluid distribution. Early in the U.S. space program, LBNP was devised as a way to test for orthostatic intolerance. With the development of the Skylab Program and longer

Effect of solar particle event radiation and hindlimb suspension on gastrointestinal tract bacterial translocation and immune activation.

The environmental conditions that could lead to an increased risk for the development of an infection during prolonged space flight include: microgravity, stress, radiation, disturbance of circadian rhythms, and altered nutritional intake. A large body of literature exists on the impairment of the immune system by space flight. With the advent of missions outside the Earth's magnetic field, the increased risk of adverse effects due to exposure to radiation from a solar particle event (SPE) needs to be considered. Using models of reduced gravity and SPE radiation, we identify that either 2 Gy o

Primary position upbeating nystagmus. A variety of central positional nystagmus.

We report a collaborative study of 11 patients with upbeat nystagmus in the primary position of gaze. In most cases the nystagmus behaved in accordance with Alexander's Law; in 3 patients convergence enhanced the nystagmus. Lateral gaze was without effect in 7 instances. Static tilt to prone and supine positions altered the characteristics of the nystagmus in 7 patients. The effects were variable and, in one case, there was reversal of the direction of the nystagmus to downbeating. There was pathological or radiological confirmation of lesions in the pontomedullary junction (2 cases) and the p

Comparison of Streptococcus mutans growth-phase-dependent transcriptome changes in two different simulated microgravity models.

Streptococcus mutans is a cariogenic member of human dental plaque biofilm. Our previous study of S. mutans early stationary-phase rotary cell culture system (RCCS) cultures revealed significant transcriptome changes under low-shear modelled microgravity (LSMMG) compared to normal gravity (NG), as well as an altered cell clumping phenotype. In this current study, S. mutans mid-exponential phase and late-exponential phase cultures were compared using the RCCS (LSMMG and NG orientations) as well as simulated microgravity ('0 g') using a random positioning machine (0 g RPM). The previously descri

Efficacy of an ototoxic aminoglycoside (gentamicin) on the differentiation of the inner ear of cichlid fish.

Previous investigations revealed that the growth of fish inner ear otoliths depends on the amplitude and the direction of gravity, thus suggesting the existence of a (negative) feedback mechanism. In the course of these experiments, it was shown that altered gravity both affected otolith size (and thus the provision of the proteinacious matrix) as well as the incorporation of calcium. It is hitherto unknown, as of whether sensory hair cells are involved either in the regulation of otolith growth or in the provision of otolithic material (such as protein or inorganic components) or even both. Adjacent segments biomechanics following lumbar fusion surgery: a musculoskeletal finite element model study.

PURPOSE: This study exploits a novel musculoskeletal finite element (MS-FE) spine model to evaluate the post-fusion (L4-L5) alterations in adjacent segment kinetics. METHODS: Unlike the existing MS models with idealized representation of spinal joints, this model predicts stress/strain distributions in all passive tissues while organically coupled to a MS model. This generic (in terms of musculature and material properties) model uses population-based in vivo vertebral sagittal rotations, gravity loads, and an optimization algorithm to calculate muscle forces. Simulations represent individual

Management of chemotherapy-induced adverse effects in the treatment of colorectal cancer.

The anticancer agents fluorouracil, raltitrexed, irinotecan and oxaliplatin show limited efficacy in the treatment of colorectal cancer and may be associated with substantial toxicity. Therefore, the prevention and reduction of chemotherapy-induced adverse effects is of major significance, in accordance with the increasing concern for the quality of life of patients with cancer. Therapeutic drug monitoring of fluorouracil and chronomodulation of fluorouracil and oxaliplatin, have been effective in reducing the incidence and gravity of adverse effects in several clinical trials. However, these

Effect on urine specific gravity of the addition of glucose to urine samples of dogs and cats.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate effects of the addition of glucose to dog and cat urine on urine specific gravity (USG) and determine whether glucosuria affects assessment of renal concentrating ability. SAMPLE: Urine samples from 102 dogs and 59 cats. PROCEDURES: Urine for each species was pooled to create samples with various USGs. Glucose was added to an aliquot of each USG pool (final concentration, 2,400 mg/dL), and serial dilutions of the glucose-containing aliquot were created for each pool. The USG then was measured in all samples. The difference in USG attributable to addition of glucose was

Finger displacement in Parkinson disease: up? down? sideways?

We previously reported that patients with tremor preponderant Parkinson disease (PD) displayed upward or lateral displacement of their more tremulous finger when they pointed both their index fingers at a target and closed their eyes for 15 seconds. In this study, we examined the phenomenon in 104 PD patients: 72 patients without tremor and 32 with minimal tremor to see if the displacement is related to the disease or the tremor. Sixty-eight of the 72 patients without tremor, 94%, exhibited finger displacement suggesting the phenomenon is related to the disease. None of the 104 patients were d

Modeling static and dynamic thermography of the human breast under elastic deformation.

An abnormal thermogram has been shown to be a reliable indicator of increased risk of breast cancer. Numerical modeling techniques for thermography are proposed to quantify the complex relationships between the breast thermal behaviors and the underlying physiological/pathological conditions. Previous thermal modeling techniques did not account for gravity-induced elastic deformation arising from various body postures, nor did they suggest that a dynamic thermal procedure may be used to enhance clinical diagnosis. In this paper, 3D finite element method (FEM)-based thermal and elastic modeling

Effect of magnesium, MK-801 and combination of magnesium and MK-801 on blood-brain barrier permeability and brain edema after experimental traumatic diffuse brain injury.

OBJECTIVE: Glutamate antagonists are very attractive drugs in laboratory works to protect neural tissue against ischemia. In this work, the effects of magnesium, MK-801 and combination of magnesium and MK-801 on blood-brain barrier (BBB) and brain edema after experimentally induced traumatic brain injury are evaluated. METHODS: A standard closed head injury was induced on the rats by a controlled impact device using a 450-g free falling mass from a height of 2 m onto a metallic disc fixed to the intact skull. One of the following was injected to animals intraperitoneally 30 minutes after inju

[Ozone hemotherapy and disorders of the functional energy competence of the cell membranes in gestoses].

A study made on biochemical mechanisms of metabolic abnormalities in grave forms of gestosis should allow some judgement about gravity of pathophysiological alterations developing in the patients' organism, efficiency of intensive therapy, and also attest to the need for instituting some additional corrective measures. Measured in the study were the principle indices for bodily metabolic homeostasis (LPO intensity, AOD, thiol metabolism) in physiological pregnancy and labor as well as in grave forms of gestoses (preeclampsia, gestational hypertension, eclampsia). Impact of Microgravity and Other Spaceflight Factors on Retina of Vertebrates and Humans In Vivo and In Vitro.

Spaceflight (SF) increases the risk of developmental, regenerative, and physiological disorders in animals and humans. Astronauts, besides bone loss, muscle atrophy, and cardiovascular and immune system alterations, undergo ocular disorders affecting posterior eye tissues, including the retina. Few studies revealed abnormalities in the development and changes in the regeneration of eye tissues in lower vertebrates after SF and simulated microgravity. Under microgravity conditions, mammals show disturbances in the retinal vascular system and increased risk of oxidative stress that can lead to c
