Increasing self-determination: teaching people with mental retardation to evaluate residential options.

The community living preferences of 4 institutionalized adults with mild mental retardation were identified using photographs that depicted a variety of residential characteristics. Individuals then were taught to obtain information regarding their preferences during tours of community group homes, to report that information to their social workers, and to evaluate the homes based on the information obtained. A multiple baseline across participants design showed that all 4 participants substantially increased their skills at asking questions, reporting information, and evaluating homes. the re

Pilot trial results of D-HOMES: a behavioral-activation based intervention for diabetes medication adherence and psychological wellness among people who have been homeless.

INTRODUCTION: People living with type 2 diabetes who experience homelessness face a myriad of barriers to engaging in diabetes self-care behaviors that lead to premature complications and death. This is exacerbated by high rates of comorbid mental illness, substance use disorder, and other physical health problems. Despite strong evidence to support lay health coach and behavioral activation, little research has effectively engaged people living with type 2 diabetes who had experienced homelessness (DH). METHODS: We used community engaged research and incremental behavioral treatment developm

Nutritional status of young children in AIDS-affected households and controls in Uganda.

This study conducted in Uganda assessed the nutritional status of young children and their disease history in the 3-month period before the study. Two groups of children were randomly selected: the first group consisted of 105 children living in homes where a family member fell sick of AIDS, whereas the second group consisted of 100 children who were living in homes where nobody was affected by AIDS. Acute malnutrition (wasting) was rare. There was no difference in the severity of stunting in the two groups (Z scores, -2.1 versus -2.2, P = 0.70). In those children living in AIDS-affected homes

Rickettsial Pathogens in Dogs and Ticks During an Epidemic of Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever in Ensenada, Baja California, México.

A Rocky Mountain spotted fever (RMSF) epidemic has spread through the state of Baja California, Mexico over the last decade and a half, beginning in Mexicali, and subsequently to Tijuana and to Ensenada by 2018. In October of 2022, we surveyed dogs and homes in randomly selected Áreas Geoestadisticas Básicas (AGEBs) with and without reported human cases. Brown dog ticks (Rhipicephalus sanguineus sensu lato) were found on 33.9% of dogs and in the yards of 23.6% of homes. Homes from AGEBs with cases had over a 6-fold increased odds of ticks being present in the yard than AGEBs without reported c

Reduction of femoral fractures in long-term care facilities: the Bavarian fracture prevention study.

BACKGROUND: Hip fractures are a major public health burden. In industrialized countries about 20% of all femoral fractures occur in care dependent persons living in nursing care and assisted living facilities. Preventive strategies for these groups are needed as the access to medical services differs from independent home dwelling older persons at risk of osteoporotic fractures. It was the objective of the study to evaluate the effect of a fall and fracture prevention program on the incidence of femoral fracture in nursing homes in Bavaria, Germany. METHODS: In a translational intervention st

The emergence of birth territory theory: Understanding the experience of giving birth in the home versus the hospital setting in Baringo and Nakuru counties of Kenya.

A comprehensive, qualitative approach to research was utilized to explore the ways in which birth territory theory can illuminate the birthing experiences of women living in Baringo and Nakuru counties, and how birth territory theory can be decentered through an African case study. Research was conducted using a combination of qualitative methods including participant observation, semi-structured interviews, and focus groups with adult women living in Baringo or Nakuru counties in Kenya who have previously given birth. Results suggest that multiple societal factors contribute to the experience

Volunteer peer support frameworks supporting older women living alone.

Volunteer peer support is an approach that enables a supportive connection between volunteers and a sub-set of community members with shared experiences or interests. To implement co-designed strategies to support older women to maintain independence and optimise wellbeing in Australia, a volunteer peer support approach was proposed. There was limited literature describing volunteer peer support frameworks to underpin interventions of this kind; and given the increasing desire for engagement of individuals and communities, articulation of the key components of such a framework is warranted. The Best of Times, the Worst of Times: Understanding Pro-cyclical Mortality.

It is well known that mortality rates are pro-cyclical. In this paper, we attempt to understand why. We find little evidence that cyclical changes in individuals' own employment-related behavior drives the relationship; own-group employment rates are not systematically related to own-group mortality. Further, most additional deaths that occur when the economy is strong are among the elderly, particularly elderly women and those residing in nursing homes. We also demonstrate that staffing in nursing homes moves counter-cyclically. These findings suggest that cyclical fluctuations in the quality

Amphetamine addiction and pregnancy. III. One year follow-up of the children. Psychosocial and pediatric aspects.

Sixty-six infants born to amphetamine-addicted mothers were followed during their first year of life. The children were divided into three groups, according to whether or not the mother stopped her abuse in early pregnancy (Group I) or continued (Group II) and whether or not the latter children were placed in foster homes immediately after birth (Group III). All but 2 of 16 mothers in Group I stayed off drugs and mostly met non-addicted friends. In Group II, on the contrary, all but 2 of 36 mothers continued their abuse one year after delivery. At the age of one year, all but one child in Grou
