Normal human craniofacial growth and development from 0 to 4 years.

Knowledge of human craniofacial growth (increase in size) and development (change in shape) is important in the clinical treatment of a range of conditions that affects it. This study uses an extensive collection of clinical CT scans to investigate craniofacial growth and development over the first 48 months of life, detail how the cranium changes in form (size and shape) in each sex and how these changes are associated with the growth and development of various soft tissues such as the brain, eyes and tongue and the expansion of the nasal cavity. This is achieved through multivariate analyses

Infection Causes Trade-Offs between Development and Growth in Larval Amphibians.

AbstractTrade-offs between life history traits are context dependent; they vary depending on environment and life stage. Negative associations between development and growth often characterize larval life stages. Both growth and development consume large parts of the energy budget of young animals. The metabolic rate of animals should reflect differences in growth and developmental rates. Growth and development can also have negative associations with immune function because of their costs. We investigated how intraspecific variation in growth and development affected the metabolism of larval

Maternal capital predicts investment in infant growth and development through lactation.

INTRODUCTION: Maternal capital (MC) is a broad term from evolutionary biology, referring to any aspects of maternal phenotype that represent resources available for investment in offspring. We investigated MC in breastfeeding mothers of late preterm and early term infants, examining its relationship with infant and breastfeeding outcomes. We also determined whether MC modified the effect of the relaxation intervention on these outcomes. METHODS: The data was collected as part of a randomized controlled trial investigating breastfeeding relaxation in 72 mothers of late preterm and early term i

PQBP1, an intellectual disability causative gene, affects bone development and growth.

Polyglutamine tract-binding protein 1 (PQBP1), an intellectual disability causative gene, is involved in transcriptional and post-transcriptional regulation of gene expression in animals, and possibly also in plants. In our previous work, reduced brain size, associated with an elongated cell cycle duration in neural stem cells (NSCs), was observed in the NSCs conditional Pqbp1 gene knockout (cKO) mice, which mimic microcephaly patients. However, the physiological significance of PQBP1 in bone metabolism has not been elucidated. Here, we analyzed the bone phenotype of nestin-Cre Pqbp1-cKO mice.

Patterns of Prenatal Alcohol Use That Predict Infant Growth and Development.

BACKGROUND: Previous studies have had inconsistent findings regarding the quantity and frequency of prenatal alcohol exposure (PAE) that lead to deficits in growth and neurodevelopment. This may be due to imprecise methods of exposure classification. Our objective in this study was to employ longitudinal trajectory modeling of maternal drinking patterns associated with infant growth or neurodevelopmental deficits to a homogenous sample of mothers and infants. METHODS: From a sample of 471 pregnant women prospectively enrolled in a longitudinal study in the Ukraine, we performed a longitudinal

mTOR inhibition affects Yap1-β-catenin-induced hepatoblastoma growth and development.

Hepatoblastoma (HB) is the most common pediatric liver malignancy. Around 80% of HB demonstrate simultaneous activation of β-catenin and Yes-associated protein 1 (Yap1). The mechanism by which these signaling pathways contribute to HB pathogenesis remain obscure. Recently, mTORC1 activation was reported in human HB cells and in a murine HB model driven by β-catenin and Yap1. Here, we directly investigate the therapeutic impact of mTOR inhibition following HB development in the Yap1-β-catenin model. HB were established by hydrodynamic tail vein injection of Sleeping Beauty transposase and plasm

Fetal Growth Restriction Alters Cerebellar Development in Fetal and Neonatal Sheep.

Fetal growth restriction (FGR) complicates 5-10% of pregnancies and is associated with increased risks of perinatal morbidity and mortality. The development of cerebellar neuropathology in utero, in response to chronic fetal hypoxia, and over the period of high risk for preterm birth, has not been previously studied. Therefore, the objective of this study was to examine the effects of FGR induced by placental insufficiency on cerebellar development at three timepoints in ovine fetal and neonatal development: (1) 115 days gestational age (d GA), (2) 124 d GA, and (3) 1-day-old postnatal age. Gut microbiota modulate host immune cells in cancer development and growth.

Emerging evidence shows that microbe interactions with the host immune system impact diverse aspects of cancer development and treatment. As a result, exciting new opportunities exist for engineering diets and microbe cocktails to lower cancer risks with fewer adverse clinical effects than traditional strategies. Microbe-based therapies may ultimately be used to reinforce host immune balance and extinguish cancer for generations to come.

How maternal malnutrition affects linear growth and development in the offspring.

Maternal malnutrition is common in the developing world and has detrimental effects on both the mother and infant. Pre-pregnancy nutritional status and weight gain during pregnancy are positively related to fetal growth and development. Internationally, there is no agreement on the method of diagnosis or treatment of moderate or severe malnutrition during pregnancy. Establishing clear guidelines for diagnosis and treatment will be essential in elevating the problem. Possible anthropometric measurements used to detect and monitor maternal malnutrition include pre-pregnancy BMI, weight gain, and

Filopodial dynamics and growth cone stabilization in Drosophila visual circuit development.

Filopodial dynamics are thought to control growth cone guidance, but the types and roles of growth cone dynamics underlying neural circuit assembly in a living brain are largely unknown. To address this issue, we have developed long-term, continuous, fast and high-resolution imaging of growth cone dynamics from axon growth to synapse formation in cultured Drosophila brains. Using R7 photoreceptor neurons as a model we show that >90% of the growth cone filopodia exhibit fast, stochastic dynamics that persist despite ongoing stepwise layer formation. Correspondingly, R7 growth cones stabilize ea

The influence of endocrine disruptors on growth and development of children.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: This review describes the most recent data about the effects of endocrine disrupting compounds (EDCs) on infant and early childhood growth and reproductive tract development as well as controversies in the field. RECENT FINDINGS: EDCs are present in pregnant women, young children and adolescents. Whether the level of exposure contributes to disease is an ongoing debate. Epidemiological studies suggest associations between prenatal EDC exposure and disease outcome, but animal studies using controlled EDC exposure have varying results with underlying mechanisms largely unknow

Drosophila is an inclusive model for human diseases, growth and development.

Cytogenetic studies over the last century have led to the complete mapping of the Drosophila polytene chromosomes. The resulting data and the analysis of puffing at specific gene sites, manifestations of enhanced transcriptional activity, have led to the use of the fruit fly as the most well-understood animal model for a plethora of cellular mechanisms and genetic defects. In recent years the fly data base has contributed greatly to the use of Drosophila as a remarkable model for the functional genomics of many human genes. Here I review briefly the diversity of "model genes" studied in this d

Follicular growth and development under continuous gonadotropin-releasing hormone antagonist administration.

OBJECTIVE: Ovarian follicle and cyst formation have been recognized as an advance phenomenon associated with GnRH agonist administration. With the use of GnRH antagonists, pituitary suppression is immediate and no flare effect and follicle growth are expected. We describe two patients who developed a dominant follicle and presumably ovulated in response to hCG triggering under continuous sole administration of a GnRH antagonist. DESIGN: Case report. SETTING: An IVF unit at a university hospital. PATIENT(S): Two young healthy female patients undergoing IVF because of male-factor infertility.

Growth and pubertal development in patients with meningomyelocele: a retrospective analysis.

Our retrospective analysis of growth and pubertal development includes 109 children and adults with meningomyelocele (MMC) (52 M, 57 F) aged 3.2-21.0 years (median 8.9 years). Anthropometric data, growth-retarding factors and data on pubertal development were analysed in comparison to the normal population using standards from Prader et al. (1). The results (mean +/- SD) were as follows. Fifty patients (46.8%) had short stature (height SDS for chronological age (SDS CA) < -2). The supine length was influenced by the level of the lesion (height SDS CA: > or = L2 -3.13 +/- 1.62, < or = S2 -0.46

Tumor suppressor genes as negative growth regulators in development and differentiation.

Tumor suppressor genes have received much attention for their roles in the development of human malignancies. However, their gene products (proteins) function as negative growth regulators and are highly expressed in many tissues during embryonic development, suggesting that they might function as critical proteins in differentiation and development. The evidence implicating tumor suppressor proteins in cellular differentiation and embryonic development will be presented with special attention to the neurofibromatosis 1, neurofibromatosis 2, and tuberous sclerosis 2 gene products.

The effects of phytoestrogens on neonatal rat uterine growth and development.

Phytoestrogens found in clover, alfalfa, and soybeans have caused reproductive toxicity in several mammalian species. Other estrogens, such as diethylstilbestrol (DES), are developmental toxicants, reducing uterine estrogen receptor (ER) concentration, altering uterine growth, and eliciting reproductive tract abnormalities in the rat. The present study examines the effects of the phytoestrogens coumestrol and equol on the developing rat uterus. Various doses of these compounds were injected sc on postnatal days (PND) 1-5 or 1-10 to ascertain their effects on uterine weight and ER levels, and o

The role of vitamin A in child growth, development and survival.

Vitamin A is essential for growth, development and survival. For children in deprived settings an adequate vitamin A status may be more critical to survival protection than to growth and development. During infancy breast milk from malnourished mothers is protective against the development of xerophthalmia; it needs to be complemented after six months by other dietary sources of vitamin A to provide full health protection. Correcting the low vitamin A content of breast milk from malnourished mothers within the first four weeks of delivery by a high dose oral vitamin A supplement can be an effe
