The effect of a prenatal androgen disruptor, vinclozolin, on gubernacular migration and testicular descent in rats.

BACKGROUND/PURPOSE: Androgen has been shown to regulate inguinoscrotal testicular descent. This study aims to clarify the effect of one of the major endocrine disrupters, vinclozolin (V), on both gubernacular migration and inguinoscrotal testicular descent in rats. METHODS: Time-pregnant rats were segregated into 2 groups. In group I, the rats were administered 200 mg/kg/d of V by gavage on days 15 to 18 of gestation. In group II, the rats were administered the same volume of solvent and were used as controls. At birth, the anogenital distance was measured in pups, and gubernacular migration

[Retractile testis and gliding testis. Two distinct clinical entities].

The gliding testis is a testicle located below the external ring, can be manipulated to the upper scrotum, but is prone to ascend to its original position. Histologic changes can be detected in these gonads by 7 years of age. We evaluated 427 consecutive prepubertal boys referred for cryptorchidism. One hundred and twenty-three had classical undescended, 71 ectopic, 55 retractile, and 178 (mean age 6 years 2 moths) gliding testes. The gliding testes were smaller than controlaterals in 24% of boys. All gliding testes were unilateral whereas bilaterality was 85% in the retractile group (p < 0.00

Intraoperative varicocele anatomy: a macroscopic and microscopic study.

Varicoceles are found in approximately 15% of all men in the general population and up to 41% of all infertile men. However, the exact location and relationship of internal and external spermatic arteries, veins and lymphatics within the inguinal portion of the spermatic cord have not been previously well described in infertile men. The results of detailed intraoperative macroscopic and microscopic surgical dissections of the spermatic cord and gubernaculum of 83 infertile men with 115 palpable varicoceles are described. Enlarged veins exiting the testis and traversing the gubernaculum were pr

Perspective: A Neuro-Hormonal Systems Approach to Understanding the Complexity of Cryptorchidism Susceptibility.

Nonsyndromic cryptorchidism is a common multifactorial, condition with long-term risks of subfertility and testicular cancer. Revealing the causes of cryptorchidism will likely improve prediction and prevention of adverse outcomes. Herein we provide our current perspective of cryptorchidism complexity in a synthesis of cumulative clinical and translational data generated by ourselves and others. From our recent comparison of genome-wide association study (GWAS) data of cryptorchidism with or without testicular germ cell tumor, we identified RBFOX family genes as candidate susceptibility loci.

[Tooth transplantation].

In the light of the thesis of J. Thibault, the authors suggest, in association with transplantation of wisdom tooth buds into the alveolus of the first molar, a technique consisting of placing the graft in its pre-eruptive position, removing in a block the bud, the gubernaculum and the sub-jacent gingival mucosa. Under these conditions, eruption occurs at the same time as development of the roots, which represents the most physiological solution. At the same time as formation of the root, the authors noted a paradoxal rhizalysis, hypercementosis resulting in ankylosis and conservation of vital

Ontogeny of gubernacular contraction and effect of calcitonin gene-related peptide in the mouse.

The mouse gubernaculum undergoes inguinoscrotal migration in the first postnatal week and also shows rhythmic contractions in organ culture in response to calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP). This study aimed to investigate the ontogeny of gubernacular contractile activity and effect of CGRP in organ culture in relation to the normal time of migration. Two hundred eighty gubernacula from male mice of 17 and 19 days' gestation, and of postnatal days 0,2,4,7, 10, and 14 were studied. Half were cultured with CGRP 714 nmol/L, and the other half were cultured without CGRP as controls. All were e

Regression of the mammary branch of the genitofemoral nerve may be necessary for testicular descent in rats.

PURPOSE: Inguinoscrotal testicular descent has been proposed to occur via sensory fibers of the sexually dimorphic genitofemoral nerve, which release a neurotransmitter, calcitonin gene related peptide, to guide the migrating gubernaculum into the scrotum. We hypothesize that androgen mediated regression of the genitofemoral nerve mammary branch is necessary for inguinoscrotal descent in rats. We compared the spatiotemporal development of the genitofemoral nerve in control and antiandrogen treated rats. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 29 Sprague-Dawley® rats were collected (animal ethics co

Tooth eruption: evidence for the central role of the dental follicle.

The roles of the gubernaculum dentis, root formation, tooth crown and dental follicle in prefunctional eruption of a mandibular premolar have been studied in nine beagle dogs by radiographic and histologic evaluations of the effects of surgical ablation or removal of these structures on tooth eruption. The dental follicle was the only one of these structures required for the coordinated enlargement of the eruption pathway and formation of bone in the base of the bony crypt, the radiographic and histologic hallmarks of tooth eruption. These data, together with the topographic relationships of t

Receptivity of the human male and female fetal caudal genital ligament to gonadal hormones.

In briefCurrent understanding of testicular descent mechanisms, mainly based on rodent models, attributes a central role to testicular hormones. This study examines the hormonal receptivity and potential sex differences of human caudal genital ligaments (also named gubernaculum in males) during organogenesis. Abstract In both sexes, fetal gonads are connected to the abdominal wall by caudal genital ligaments (CGLs). The male CGL (gubernaculum testis) drives testis descent under the influence of testicular hormones, whereas the fate of the female CGL is thought to result from the absence of the

Mythical 'Tails of Lockwood'.

The cause of testicular ectopia has long been a mystery, and over the years, many hypotheses have been suggested to explain the condition. The most famous of these hypotheses is that of the 'Tails of Lockwood'. This developed from a paper written in 1888 by Charles Barrett Lockwood. Although little evidence has ever been found to corroborate this hypothesis, it remains in many textbooks and journal articles to the present day. In the 21st century, this theory should no longer be given as the cause for ectopic testes. Current biological evidence supports a complex process of growth, by elongati

Pseudodelphis limnicola sp. n. (Dracunculoidea: Guyanemidae) from the heart of Percichthys trucha (Perciformes: Percichthyidae) in Patagonian Andean Lakes (Argentina).

During a survey of parasites of Percichthys trucha (Cuvier et Valenciennes) (Perciformes: Percichthyidae) in northwestern Patagonian lakes, a new dracunculoid of the family Guyanemidae was found parasitizing as adults the heart of the fish. This species belongs to the genus Pseudodelphis Adamson et Roth, 1990 by having deirids, glandular multinucleate oesophagus and anterior branch of the uterus, and by lacking caudal alae and a gubernaculum. Pseudodelphis limnicola sp. n. differs from Pseudodelphis oligocotti Adamson et Roth, 1990 by the number and distribution of the cephalic papillae, a mus

[A case of an ectopic testis in the perineum].

The ectopic position of the testis is defined by a migration differing from the normal descent into the scrotum. This error is due to an anomaly of fixation of the distal extremity of the gubernaculum testis (2), resulting in an abnormal position of the testis. The five major sites of ectopic testis are the superficial inguinal canal (most frequent), femoral canal, suprapubic region (at the base of the penis), contralateral scrotum (rare) (3) and, lastly, the perineal region, which is also rare (8). The authors report a case of perineal testis in a 4 year old boy. The diagnosis was clinical an

Transverse testicular ectopia with persistent müllerian duct syndrome: a case report.

Transverse testicular ectopia (TTE) is a variant of ectopic testis in which both testes are located in the same scrotum. Persistent Müllerian duct syndrome (PMDS) is a congenital anomaly characterized by the retention of Müllerian duct remnants in males. TTE is a characteristic clinical finding in PMDS. This case report describes a patient in his 50s who was diagnosed with PMDS based on TTE findings and a pelvic structure suggestive of a Müllerian duct remnant. Computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) revealed the normal left testis within the left scrotum. The soft tissue

A polyorchid dog.

The case of a polyorchid Irish Setter is presented here. Castration and intra-abdominal testis removal were performed one year of age when one scrotal and one cryptorchid testis near the right inguinal canal were removed. Later it became apparent that there was still testosterone production. A third testis, abdominal cryptorchid, was found on the right side cranially and right to the bladder. The third testis had a strong cranial suspensory ligament and the tail of the epididymis was elongated. The ductus deferens did not enter the prostate but followed the gubernaculum to the inguinal canal n

Gubernacular cell division in different rodent models of cryptorchidism supports indirect androgenic action via the genitofemoral nerve.

PURPOSE: The role of the "gubernaculum" in testicular descent remains controversial. Androgens are proposed to act indirectly by the genitofemoral nerve (GFN) releasing calcitonin gene-related peptide. The authors studied the effects of sensory nerve ablation and androgen blockade on mitosis in the gubernacular tip to determine whether androgens act directly or indirectly. METHODS: Five rat models were examined for bromodeoxyuridine (BUdR)-labeling: (i) Sprague-Dawley (SD) rats (controls), (ii) prenatal flutamide-treated rats (75 mg/kg to dams on D16-19 gestation), (iii) neonatal capsaicin-tr
