Shame versus trauma-related guilt as mediators of the relationship between PTSD symptoms and aggression among returning veterans.

OBJECTIVE: It is well established that posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is associated with various forms of aggression, though the mechanisms by which PTSD is related to aggression are not fully understood. Some research suggests that the tendency to experience shame, but not guilt, contributes to aggression in individuals with a history of interpersonal trauma. This study tested the hypothesis that trait shame but not trauma-related guilt would mediate the relationship between PTSD symptoms and verbal and physical aggression in veterans with combat/military-related trauma seeking PTSD tre

Allergen safety among Brazilian restaurant food business operators: guilt, rather than regret or shame, links cognitive responsibility to intentions.

Consumers with food allergies and intolerances face significant risks when eating out, especially in countries lacking specific legislation on allergen communication. In such contexts, they depend heavily on the information and practices adopted by food business operators (FBOs). This study investigated key aspects of allergen management among FBOs, focusing on (i) knowledge and decision-making in situations involving allergic reactions; (ii) cognitive, moral, and emotional determinants influencing the management of allergenic foods; and (iii) potential allergen contamination in food preparati

Aware and tuned to care: Children with better distress recognition and higher sympathy anticipate more guilt after harming others.

Helping children recognize the distress of their victims and feel sympathy may facilitate the optimal socialization of ethical guilt. With a sample of 150 eight-year-olds, we tested the main and interactive relations of distress recognition and sympathy to ethical guilt after hypothetically stealing and pushing. Better fear recognition and higher sympathy were uniquely associated with higher ethical guilt. The link between fear recognition and ethical guilt was stronger in children with higher sympathy. Beyond their unique contributions, distress recognition and sympathy may work in concert to

"I do feel a lot of guilt about the lunchboxes": Exploring caregiver perceptions and experiences of packing school lunches.

PURPOSE: The absence of school-provided meals in Australia means caregivers are responsible for providing school lunches, which are a key contributor to children's overall diet. While packing school lunchboxes requires physical, cognitive, relational and emotional labour, there has been little investigation about Australian caregivers' understandings of these processes. This study therefore aimed to explore these perceptions, experiences and beliefs surrounding school lunchbox practices. METHODS: Qualitative phenomenological study using semi-structured interviews with South Australian caregiv

Trauma-Related Shame and Guilt as Prospective Predictors of Daily Mental Contamination and PTSD Symptoms in Survivors of Sexual Trauma.

Mental contamination (MC), the experience of dirtiness in the absence of a physical contaminant, has established links with posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Shame and guilt have well-documented relationships with symptoms of PTSD and may play a role in the development and maintenance of MC. The present study examined whether trauma-related shame and guilt prospectively predicted daily MC and symptoms of PTSD among 41 women with a history of sexual trauma. Women completed baseline and twice-daily assessments of MC and symptoms of PTSD over a 2-week period and baseline measures of trauma-re

Early childhood caries and psychological perceptions on child's oral health increase the feeling of guilt in parents: an epidemiological survey.

AIM: To assess whether parents feel guilty for their children's oral problems, associating this feeling with socio-economic, demographic, and psychological factors. DESIGN: We included 1313 parent-and-child pairs in this study. The children were 2-4 years old. Parents answered questionnaires on socio-economic and demographic data, and on psychological variables. Sixteen trained dentists (κ > 0.8) examined the children for oral hygiene (the presence and absence of plaque), early childhood caries (ECC; no caries, low and high severity), malocclusion (the presence and absence), and traumatic den

Blame and guilt - a mixed methods study of obstetricians' and midwives' experiences and existential considerations after involvement in traumatic childbirth.

INTRODUCTION: When complications arise in the delivery room, midwives and obstetricians operate at the interface of life and death, and in rare cases the infant or the mother suffers severe and possibly fatal injuries related to the birth. This descriptive study investigated the numbers and proportions of obstetricians and midwives involved in such traumatic childbirth and explored their experiences with guilt, blame, shame and existential concerns. MATERIAL AND METHODS: A mixed methods study comprising a national survey of Danish obstetricians and midwives and a qualitative interview study w

Association by guilt: identification of DLX5 as a target for MeCP2 provides a molecular link between genomic imprinting and Rett syndrome.

Rett syndrome (RTT) is an X-linked dominant neurodevelopmental disorder affecting almost exclusively girls. Although mutations in methyl-CpG-binding protein (MeCP2) are known to be associated with RTT, gene expression patterns are not significantly altered in MeCP2-deficient cells. A recent study1 identified MeCP2-mediated histone modification and formation of a higher-order chromatin loop structure specifically associated with silent chromatin at the Dlx5-Dlx6 locus in normal cells, and its absence thereof in RTT patients. This altered expression of Dlx5 through loss of silent chromatin loop

Disgust, shame, and guilt: Examining unique relationships with eating disorder, obsessive-compulsive disorder, and post-traumatic stress disorder symptoms.

OBJECTIVE: Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and eating disorders (EDs) are frequently comorbid, but mechanisms shared between their comorbidity remain understudied. Interconnected moral emotions, such as disgust, shame, and guilt, show associations with these disorders, yet, no research has tested if these emotions are unique or overlapping factors contributing to symptoms of OCD, PTSD, and EDs. METHOD: The present cross-sectional study (N = 3513) investigated the potential overlap of disgust sensitivity, state shame, and state guilt in a large sampl

What will others think of me? The longitudinal association between trauma-related shame and guilt and psychopathology after a terror attack.

BACKGROUND: Trauma-related shame and guilt have been identified as important factors for mental health following interpersonal trauma. For survivors of terror and disasters, however, the role of shame and guilt remains largely unknown. AIMS: To explore the long-term occurrence of trauma-related shame and guilt among survivors of a terror attack, and the potential importance of these emotions for mental health. METHOD: A total of 347 survivors (48.7% female, mean age at the time of the attack: 19.25 years, s.d. = 4.40) of the 2011 massacre on Utøya island, Norway, participated in face-to-face

Rumination mediates the relationships of fear and guilt to posttraumatic stress disorder and posttraumatic growth among adolescents after the Ya'an earthquake.

Background: Although previous research has demonstrated that fear and guilt have an effect on posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), it is still unclear how these two emotions affect posttraumatic growth (PTG). Moreover, few studies have examined the mechanisms by which fear and guilt affect PTSD and PTG. Guided by Lee et al.'s theory of PTSD generation mechanisms and Calhoun and Tedeschi's PTG theory, the current study proposes that intrusive rumination (IR) and deliberate rumination (DR) may play a mediating role in the effects of guilt and fear on PTSD and PTG. Objective: This study aimed to

Prediction of key gene function in spinal muscular atrophy using guilt by association method based on network and gene ontology.

Guilt by association (GBA) algorithm has been widely used to predict gene functions statistically, and a network-based approach may increase the confidence and veracity of identifying molecular signatures for diseases. The aim of the present study was to suggest a gene ontology (GO)-based method by integrating the GBA algorithm and network, to identify key gene functions for spinal muscular atrophy (SMA). The inference of predicting key gene functions was comprised of four steps, preparing gene lists and sets; extracting differentially expressed genes (DEGs) using microarray data [linear model

Role of depression, anxiety and stress in predicting body image disturbance; the mediating role of shame and guilt in patients with breast cancer.

BACKGROUND: Breast cancer is the most common cancer among women. The treatment process can lead to various physical and psychological challenges. Furthermore, breast cancer treatment can evoke a range of emotions due to changes in body image, including feelings of shame and guilt. This study aims to identify how feelings of shame and guilt mediate the impact of psychological distress on body image difficulties through comprehensive model. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This cross-sectional study, conducted in Tehran, Iran in 2023, recruited 210 breast cancer patients (mean age of 44.50; range 22-75)

The influences of guilt and shame on anger in patients with concurrent psychogenic Non-Epileptic seizures and PTSD: The mediating role of frustration intolerance.

Research indicates that emotions such as anger, guilt, shame, and difficulty tolerating frustration can contribute to harmful behaviors in individuals experiencing both functional/dissociative seizures (FDSs) and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). This study examined the association of guilt and shame with anger through the mediating role of frustration intolerance in patients with simultaneous FDSs and PTSD. The clinical sample of this study included 150 patients with coexisting FDSs and PTSD who were selected using a convenience sampling method in a descriptive study design. The data wer

Emotional Dysregulation-Mediated Associations Between Guilt Proneness, Shame Proneness, and Internet Gaming Disorder Among Chinese University Students: Cross-Sectional Survey.

BACKGROUND: Guilt proneness and shame proneness are interconnected yet distinct personality traits that are gaining attention in addiction research. However, studies examining their differential associations with internet gaming disorder (IGD) and mediation mechanisms explaining these associations remain scarce. Theoretical and empirical evidence suggests that emotional dysregulation could be a potential mediator of the associations between guilt proneness and shame proneness and IGD. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to investigate the associations between guilt proneness in cognitive (guilt-negat
