[Preliminary analysis of the modifications of spinal curves, in extreme amplitudes, observed in rhythmic and athletic gymnastics].

Trained users of Rhythmic and Athletic Gymnastic, present kinetic spinal vast extents. Analysis, with pasted cutaneous markers, shows that, according to the codified movement, various segments of the vertebral column are requested and realized important displacements. Nevertheless, to have an homogeneous attitude, some subjects request more either lumbar or thoracic segments, of both. To prevent frequent spinal pain, it is important to realize a preliminary subject selection using their total spine and to improve protection by adapted gymnastic.

The Assessment of the Effect of Gaze Direction Instruction on the Stabilisation During Artistic Gymnastic Landing.

The aim of this study was to assess the effect of gaze direction instruction on postural stabilisation and muscle activity during landings after various motor tasks in artistic gymnastics. Eighteen female gymnasts (aged 14.0 ± 2.7 years) performed four different landing tasks: drop landing, backward somersault, forward somersault (SF) and a backward acrobatic series (AS). Gaze was directed either downward or straight ahead during landings. Muscle activity was recorded from six lower limb muscles and postural stabilisation was assessed using dynamic stability indices and time to stabilisation.

Common Injuries and Their Management Among Youth to Elite Artistic Male and Female Gymnasts.

Artistic gymnastics is a complex and challenging sport. The specific demands of gymnastics place athletes at unique risk of injuries to the spine, as well as upper and lower extremities. Changes to the rules and scoring system since the 2004 Olympics have encouraged athletes to perform more challenging skills, adding to the risk of injury. Single-sport specialization occurs at a young age among competitive gymnasts, introducing an increased risk of overuse injuries. Common injuries include spondylolysis, medial-sided elbow injuries, gymnast's wrist, ligamentous injuries of the knee, and Achill

Is Hip and Lumbar-Spine Pain Related to Physiological Characteristics in Young Elite Gymnasts?

PURPOSE: Gymnastics performances entail complex and extensive movements that require specific body morphology, strength, and flexibility that may lead to hip and lumbar-spine injuries. The present study aimed to evaluate the prevalence of hip and lumbar-spine pain and their associated physiological characteristics in young gymnasts. METHODS: Two hundred seventy-four female rhythmic, acrobatic, and artistic gymnasts age 9 to 16 years were physically examined for hip and lumbar-spine pain and reported pain experienced during training on a visual analog scale. In addition, gymnasts were assessed

Prevention and treatment outcomes of low back pain in competitive gymnasts - A systematic review.

PURPOSE: Artistic gymnasts perform skills that involve repetitive flexion, hyperextension, and compressive loading, placing significant biomechanical stress on the lumbar spine. These demands contribute to the high prevalence of low back pain in this population. Despite its prevalence, there remains a need for targeted treatment strategies that address the sport-specific challenges faced by gymnasts. METHODS: Studies related to the prevention and treatment outcomes of LBP in gymnasts published before October 7, 2024 were searched and screened from the PubMed/Medline, Embase (OVID), and Web of

Run-up velocity and jumping ground reaction force of Chinese female gymnasts.

The run-up velocity and jumping ground reaction force directly influence gymnasts' ability to perform more difficult manoeuvres and win competitions on vault. However, the variables influencing them among elite female gymnasts remain inadequately understood and warrant detailed investigation. This study aimed to analyse critical variables including run-up velocity and jumping ground reaction force, and to compare these factors across different vault types while further exploring the correlations among them. The study hypothesized that there are significant differences in run-up velocity and ju

The Risk Factors Associated with Grip Lock Injuries in Artistic Gymnasts: A Systematic Review.

Artistic gymnastics (AG) is a sport that demands grace, strength, and flexibility, leading to a broad spectrum of injuries. The dowel grip (DG) is widely used by gymnasts to securely hold onto the high bar or uneven bars. However, incorrect usage of the DG can result in grip lock (GL) injuries. This systematic review aims to (1) identify studies that have investigated the risk factors related to GL injuries among gymnasts and (2) synthesize the key evidence. A comprehensive electronic search was conducted in the following databases: PubMed, ScienceDirect, Elsevier, SportDiscus, and Google Scho

Capitellar osteochondritis dissecans in an elite pre-adolescent gymnast: a case report and overview.

OBJECTIVE: Following sports injury, a timely and accurate diagnosis is important, so as to initiate appropriate care as soon as possible. This is perhaps even more paramount in pediatric athletic trauma, particularly during the pre-puberty through adolescent years of rapid skeletal growth. This paper presents the diagnosis and management of osteochondritis dissecans in its third most common location, the elbow, a presentation of which chiropractors should be aware, including the importance of timely diagnosis and appropriate treatment. CLINICAL FEATURES: A 9-year-old elite gymnast presented a

Plasticity in deep and superficial white matter: a DTI study in world class gymnasts.

Brain white matter (WM) could be generally categorized into two types, deep and superficial WM. Studies combining these two types WM are important for a better understanding of brain plasticity induced by motor training. In this study, we applied both univariate and multivariate approaches to study gymnastic training-induced plasticity in brain WM. Specifically, we acquired diffusion tensor imaging data from 13 world class gymnasts and 14 non-athlete normal controls, reconstructed brain deep and superficial WM tracts, estimated and compared their fractional anisotropy (FA) difference between t

Bioceramic fabrics improve quiet standing posture and handstand stability in expert gymnasts.

Bioceramic fabrics have been claimed to improve blood circulation, thermoregulation and muscle relaxation, thereby also improving muscular activity. Here we tested whether bioceramic fabrics have an effect on postural control and contribute to improve postural stability. In Experiment 1, we tested whether bioceramic fabrics contribute to reduce body-sway when maintaining standard standing posture. In Experiment 2, we measured the effect of bioceramic fabrics on body-sway when maintaining a more instable posture, namely a handstand hold. For both experiments, postural oscillations were measured

Delayed presentation of a cervical spine fracture dislocation with posterior ligamentous disruption in a gymnast.

Cervical spine injuries are uncommon but potentially devastating athletic injuries. We report a case of a girl gymnast who presented with a cervical spine fracture dislocation with posterior ligamentous disruption several days after injury. To our knowledge, this type of presentation with such severity of injury in a gymnast has not been reported in the literature. The patient was performing a double front tuck flip and sustained a hyperflexion, axial-loading injury. She experienced mild transient numbness in her bilateral upper and lower extremities lasting for about 5 minutes, after which it

Wrist pain, distal radial physeal injury, and ulnar variance in the young gymnast.

In gymnastics, the wrist joint is subjected to repetitive loading in a weightbearing fashion. In this setting, chronic wrist pain is quite common. Because gymnasts ordinarily enter the sport at very young ages and train for several years before skeletal maturity is attained, the growth plates of the wrist are at risk for injury. In addition, imaging studies have identified evidence of injury to the distal radial physis and the development of positive ulnar variance. Recent studies provide more information on the relationships between these findings, as well as factors that may predispose some

Epidemiology of injury in elite and subelite female gymnasts: a comparison of retrospective and prospective findings.

OBJECTIVES: An 18 month prospective injury survey was conducted on 64 Australian elite and subelite female gymnasts. The aims were to determine the rate of injury, anatomical location, and types of injury incurred by female competitive gymnasts, and to compare the findings with data collected retrospectively from the same sample of gymnasts. METHODS: The gymnasts recorded (weekly) in an injury record booklet the number of hours trained and information on any injuries suffered over that week. RESULTS: The sample reported 349 injuries, a rate of 5.45 per person (6.29 for the elite and 4.95 for

The gymnast's wrist: acquired positive ulnar variance following chronic epiphyseal injury.

Five cases of symptomatic acquired positive ulnar variance are described. All cases occurred due to premature physeal closure of the growth plate in teenage girl gymnasts. All cases demonstrated ulnocarpal impingement, for which we describe a clinical test. Arthroscopic assessment of the wrist allowed us to assess the integrity of the TFCC (triangular fibrocartilaginous complex) and decide on the most appropriate surgery. Two patients needed distal ulna recession and one needed shaving for a TFCC perforation, with a good result.

Effects of an external load on anticipatory mechanisms of handstand walking initiation in experienced gymnasts.

Anticipatory postural adjustments (APAs) are responsible for a successful first step execution in handstand walking. This study evaluates gymnasts' ability to adapt their APAs and stepping parameters in response to adding/removing an external load over repeated handstand walking initiation trials. Eighteen gymnasts performed five handstand walking initiation trials without load (PRE), eight trials with an external load (LOAD) and five trials with removed load (POST). Force platforms and a motion capture system were used to quantify mechanical parameters from the anticipatory phase and the step

Injuries, Pain, and Catastrophizing Level in Gymnasts: A Retrospective Analysis of a Cohort of Spanish Athletes.

Physical and psychological demands from gymnastics increase the occurrence of injuries and pain among athletes, whose consequent level of catastrophizing could affect rehabilitation and performance. Although the characteristics of each gymnastics discipline may be key factors, they remain unclear. This study aimed to describe injuries, pain, and catastrophizing levels of gymnasts, according to their discipline and training characteristics. A total of 160 gymnasts fulfilled an online survey at the end of the 2021 season. Eighty gymnasts sustained 106 injuries (mainly ankle), and 128 had current
