Short-term breastfeeding and early exposure to dairy products into infant diets, may be critical factors for development of type 1 diabetes. In this study, we investigate whether cow's milk proteins are risk factors for type 1 diabetes in genetically susceptible individuals (HLA DR3/DR4) by using statistical analysis and in silico approach. In order to verify the potential risk of the early introduction of cow's milk, we conducted this study to validate the veracity of this hypothesis in our population. We included 121 subjects, 55 type 1 diabetics and 74 controls from the region of Tlemcen (A

We studied the epidemiology of giant cell arteritis (GCA) and polymyalgia rheumatica (PMR) in a Mediterranean population. Ninety-nine patients with PMR and/or GCA were identified over a 9-year period (1980-1988) in Reggio Emilia, Italy. The average annual incidence of PMR and GCA was 12.7/100,000 and 6.9/100,000, respectively, in a population aged 50 years or older. Frequencies of HLA antigens were determined in 49 patients with PMR and/or GCA who were followed by staff at our rheumatology unit during the 1980-1988 period. When compared with HLA findings in 242 healthy controls, DR4 was not fo

Cystic fibrosis (CF) is the most common lethal autosomal recessive disease in white Caucasians. It affects many organs including the lung, pancreas, and liver. Whilst CF is a monogenic disease, several studies revealed a complex relationship between genotype and clinical phenotype of diseases. We examined the expression of human leukocyte antigen (HLA) class II alleles among Iranian CF patients with disease-related microbial infection. This study was conducted on 50 hospitalized CF patients (27 males, 23 females aged 15.5±6.5 years), and 50 healthy age- and gender-matched control subjects. 5ml

OBJECTIVE: To determine whether the HLA alleles DR1, DR3, DR4 and DR10 which have been suggested to be risk markers for unexplained recurrent miscarriages also play a part in women with recurrent miscarriages with Müllerian uterine fusion anomalies.
STUDY DESIGN: HLA-DR typing was undertaken in 28 women with recurrent miscarriage who had been surgically treated for Müllerian anomalies and in 360 controls. In the study group, outcome of pregnancies after surgery was correlated to the results of the HLA typing.
RESULTS: In the study group, 61% were positive for HLA-DR1, -DR3, -DR4 or -DR10 com

BACKGROUND: Approximately 30% of schizophrenic patients defined as treatment refractory significantly improve with clozapine. However, clozapine produces agranulocytosis in approximately 1% to 2% of patients in the United States. The mechanism of clozapine-induced agranulocytosis has not been established, but evidence suggests an immune-mediated mechanism.
METHOD: Human leukocyte antigen (HLA) typing was performed in a native American with clozapine-induced agranulocytosis.
RESULTS: Our findings support previous observations of a role of the HLA-B16, DR4, DQw3 haplotype in predicting suscept

HLA antigens in 157 unrelated Koreans with leprosy have been identified and compared with 162 healthy Korean controls. The patient group consisted of 124 with lepromatous leprosy and 33 with tuberculoid leprosy. Although no significant differences were detected between the two patient groups, several antigens were found to be increased in the combined patient group compared to healthy controls. Two Class I antigens were increased: HLA-A11 (22% vs 12%) and Aw33 (27% vs 14%). Four Class II antigens were increased: HLA-DR1 (16% vs 7%), DR2 (39% vs 21%), DRw9 (14% vs 6%) and DQw1 (74% vs 55%). Herpes gestationis or pemphigoid gestationis (PG) is a bullous disease developing in association with pregnancy. It is believed to be an immunologically mediated disorder. Antibody binding by specific autoantibodies was detected in placental tissue and in the area of the hemidesmosomes and the basal membrane zone of the skin. These autoantibodies react with antigens of 180 kDa and 230 kDa relative molecular mass, which are presumably identical to the bullous pemphigoid antigen BPAG1 and BPAG2. The herpes gestationis factor (HG factor) preferentially binds to the 180-kDa antigen (BPAG2). The in

HLA class II antigens and DRB1, DQA1, DQB1 alleles were studied in 16 Italian and in 16 Sardinian patients with pemphigus vulgaris (PV). In the last group the complete HLA A-DQ haplotypes, including the complotypes, were defined by family studies. As in other populations, two PV susceptibility haplotypes were found: HLA-DRB1*0402, DQA1*0301, DQB1*0302 and HLA-DRB1*1401, DQA1*0104, DQB1*0503. The first haplotype was largely prevalent in the Sardinian patients and was a part of the extended haplotype HLA-A2, Cw4, B35, S31, DR4, DQ8. The strength of the allele associations to PV is in agreement w

BACKGROUND: Onychomycosis is multifactorial in origin. Studies have suggested an autosomal dominant pattern of inheritance and human leukocyte antigen DR4 (HLA-DR4) has been shown to protect against onychomycosis in an Ashkenazi Jewish population.
AIM: This study investigates HLA class II association in a Mexican Mestizo population with Trichophyton rubrum onychomycosis.
METHODS: This was a prospective case-control study. Mexican Mestizos with a clinical diagnosis of onychomycosis and culture positive for T. rubrum were recruited, together with age- and sex-matched controls. First-degree rel

BACKGROUND: Type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1D) is an autoimmune disease with a strong genetic predisposition, largely conferred by human leukocyte antigen (HLA) class II genes. Patients with T1D frequently develop additional autoimmune diseases (AIDs). However, data on HLA class II alleles and haplotypes associated with concomitant autoimmune diseases in T1D remain limited, particularly in Central European populations. This study aimed to investigate the distribution of HLA class II allele variants and haplotypes in patients with T1D with and without concomitant autoimmune diseases affecting the t

AIMS/HYPOTHESIS: Enterovirus infections are among the environmental risk factors potentially contributing to the pathogenesis of Type 1 diabetes. The aim of this study was to evaluate virus-host interaction by analysing the enterovirus antibody levels in subjects carrying different HLA-DR alleles associated with either increased or decreased risk of Type 1 diabetes.
METHODS: Antibodies against coxsackievirus B4 were measured to study immune responses induced by natural enterovirus infections and against poliovirus 1 to study immune responses induced by immunisation by enterovirus antigens (va

BACKGROUND: Autoimmune polyendocrine syndrome type II (APS-2) is a rare constellation of autoimmune hypoadrenalism, thyroid dysfunction and/or type 1 diabetes (T1DM), usually occurring in the 3rd or 4th decades and associated with a human leukocyte antigen (HLA) DR3 or DR4 serotype. We detail the first report of an elderly woman developing the full triad of APS-2 shortly after commencing anti-programmed cell death protein 1 (anti-PD1) immune checkpoint inhibition for unresectable melanoma and review the literature for similar presentations secondary to anti-PD1 axis therapy.

Human leucocyte antigen (HLA)-typing was studied in 82 hepatitis B carriers and 15 cases of autoimmune hepatitis (AIH) to elucidate the genetic factors which may associated with the etio-pathogenesis of chronic hepatitis in Japan. There were two types of HLA phenotypes: HLA A2 was associated with the progression of the disease induced by HBV infection, and HLA A26 and DR5 were related to the retardation of the disease. A family study confirmed the strong association of these HLA phenotypes with the disease induced by HBV infection. In the analysis of AIH, HLA DR4 is a risk factor related to su

Patients with progressive systemic sclerosis (PSS; scleroderma) were typed for the HLA-A, -B, and -DR antigens. No significant differences in the frequencies of any HLA-A or -B antigen were found. In the subgroup of patients with PSS and diffuse scleroderma (PSS-DS), the frequency of Bw35 was increased (0.30 vs 0.17 in controls; p less than 0.005, corrected P greater than 0.2). Although patients with PSS-DS also had an increased frequency of DR1 antigen (0.27 vs 0.12 in local controls; P less than 0.005, corrected P less than 0.05), no association between Bw35 and DR1 antigens could be detecte

Adoptive cell therapy (ACT) is one of promising immunotherapies for cancer patients by providing a large amount of cancer antigen-specific effector T cells that can be manufactured rapidly by ex vivo gene engineering. To provide antigen-specificity to patients' autologous T cells in a short-term culture, T-cell receptors (TCRs) or chimeric antigen receptors (CARs) are transduced to bulk T cells. Because of intra- and inter-tumoral heterogeneity in tumor antigen expression, a repertoire of TCR or CAR genes targeting a wide range of tumor antigens are required for a broad and effective treatment

Moyamoya disease is a progressive disease which involves the internal carotid arteries and its branches bilaterally. The disease is reported both in adults and in children. Moyamoya disease is frequently seen in Japanese patients having certain human leucocyte antigen (HLA) haplotypes including HLA-Aw24, Bw46 and Bw54. Twin cases are rarely reported in the literature. We hereby present the first Turkish monozygotic twins with moyamoya disease whose HLA haplotypes are A2, A9, B21, Bw22, Bw4, Bw6, Cw3, and DR2, DR4, DRw52, DRw53, Dq7.
