Induction of periodic alternating nystagmus in intact goldfish by sinusoidal rotation.

During movement, the vestibulo-ocular reflex (VOR) normally maintains retinal image stability by making slow-phase eye rotations that counterbalance head rotations. These eye rotations are nystagmic when the on-going slow-phases are interrupted by fast-phase eye rotations that reset eye position. Periodic alternating nystagmus (PAN) is an eye-movement disorder characterized by uncontrollable nystagmus that alternates direction roughly sinusoidally (at about 0.005 Hz). PAN has been observed only in humans with cerebellar disorders and in monkeys with lesions to the cerebellar nodulus and uvula.

Development of three-dimensional form perception.

In three experiments with infants and one with adults we explored the generality, limitations, and informational bases of early form perception. In the infant studies we used a habituation-of-looking-time procedure and the method of Kellman (1984), in which responses to three-dimensional (3-D) form were isolated by habituating 16-week-old subjects to a single object in two different axes of rotation in depth, and testing afterward for dishabituation to the same object and to a different object in a novel axis of rotation. In Experiment 1, continuous optical transformations given by moving 16-w

Tonic, phasic and cortical arousal in Gilles de la Tourette's syndrome.

This study explored the hypothesis that Gilles de la Tourette's syndrome involves a disturbance in arousal modulation. The experimental group consisted of 20 unmedicated subjects with the Gilles de la Tourette's syndrome, and the control group of 20 subjects with chronic medical illnesses (haemophilia, von Willebrandt's disease and diabetes). There were differences between groups in the manner in which log conductance level changed over time during sound and light habituation experiments involving mild levels of stimulation with the Gilles de la Tourette group showing less change in arousal le

Effect of various behavioral training and testing procedures on brain beta-endorphin-like immunoreactivity and the possible role of beta-endorphin in behavioral regulation.

Beta-Endorphin-like immunoreactivity is reduced in the rat diencephalon after the animals are exposed for the first time to any of the following behavioral situations: 50 tones (habituation), 50 tone-footshock shuttle avoidance trials, one step-down inhibitory avoidance trial, simple exposure to the avoidance apparatus with no footshocks, or inescapable shock. The effect is not observed when animals are exposed to any of these situations for a second time. The reduction of brain beta-endorphin-like immunoreactivity is attributable to release and subsequent metabolism of the substance, and corr

Repeated heat pain threshold testing in pain-free individuals induces habituation and yields false-positive pre-post comparisons.

Heat pain thresholds (HPTs) are used for clinical assessments, sensory phenotyping, and pre-post comparisons. This usage assumes that HPTs are stable, exchangeable, and unaffected by repetition. Twenty consecutive HPT measures were taken at each volar forearm during three daily sessions in pain-free individuals. Negative exponential growth models were used to characterise HPT series and estimate effects of session, side, and time between sessions. To assess suitability for within-session pre-post comparisons, the mean of the first n repetitions of a series was compared with the mean of the sub

Zebrafish startle habituation: How readout choice influences the interpretation of chemical effects in neurotoxicity screening.

Zebrafish behavioral profiling is increasingly used in environmentally oriented New Approach Methodologies (NAMs) for chemical hazard assessment, including neuroactive chemicals. However, interpreting acoustic/vibrational startle habituation requires understanding how different quantification strategies influence toxicological readouts. In this study, we performed a controlled cross-platform comparison of two common habituation metrics in 5-dpf zebrafish eleutheroembryos following acute chemical exposure. Using embryos from the same spawning and shared stock solutions, we evaluated: (i) a cent

Habituating to handling: factors affecting preorbital gland opening in red deer calves.

The preorbital gland plays not only an olfactory role in cervids but also a visual one. Opening this gland is an easy way for the calf to communicate with the mother, indicating hunger/satiety, stress, pain, fear, or excitement. This information can be also useful for farm operators to assess how fast the calves habituate to handling routines and to detect those calves that do not habituate and may suffer chronic stress in the future. Thirty-one calves were subjected to 2 consecutive experiments to clarify if observing preorbital gland opening is related to habituation to handling in red deer

Renewal and reinstatement of the conditioned but not the unconditioned response following habituation of the unconditioned stimulus.

Research on the inhibition of learned fear currently relies almost exclusively on one specific procedure, namely extinction of the conditioned stimulus (CS). Importantly, however, learned fear responses can be reduced by a number of other procedures, including habituation of the unconditioned stimulus (US). We recently demonstrated that reductions in learned fear following US habituation, like CS extinction, were subject to both renewal and reinstatement (Storsve et al., 2010). The present study further investigates the associative and non-associative processes shared between habituation and e

Habituation to environmental enrichment in captive sloth bears--effect on stereotypies.

The benefits to captive animals of environmental enrichment (EE) are widely recognized. Few studies have, however, studied how to maximise the effect of EE. One issue with EE programs seems to be habituation to the enrichment device. To study the effect of habituation to EE, 14 captive sloth bears (Melursus ursinus) were subjected to two different EE treatments. Treatment one presented EE (logs with honey containing holes) for five consecutive days, whereas treatment two presented EE on intermittent days for five days. Intermittent presentations tended to reduce habituation toward the EE. Both

Chronic amphetamine transforms the emotional significance of a novel but not a familiar environment: implications for addiction.

Both drug-induced locomotor sensitization and reactivity to novelty in rodents have been related to drug-craving mechanisms in humans. We investigated whether the exposure to a completely novel environment would modulate the expression of locomotor sensitization induced by repeated administration of amphetamine (Amp) in mice. In addition to locomotion, different open-field behavioural parameters were used to evaluate the possible involvement of anxiogenic-like effects induced by Amp, novelty or a combination of the two. In order to avoid misinterpretations due to different locomotor baseline c

Working alliance for clients with social anxiety disorder: relationship with session helpfulness and within-session habituation.

It has been suggested that a strong working alliance encourages clients to take risks during therapy (Raue, Castonguay, & Goldfried, 1993). This encouragement may be important for clients who fear negative evaluations as they engage in risk-taking elements of therapy. This study examined the relationship between working alliance, session helpfulness and measures of emotional processing in 18 clients undergoing cognitive behavior therapy (CBT) for social anxiety disorder. Results indicate a positive correlation between client-rated, but not observer-rated, working alliance and session helpfulne

Perception of three-dimensional shape specified by optic flow by 8-week-old infants.

Sensitivity of 8-week-old infants to optical flow specifying the shape of a three-dimensional object was assessed. Infants viewed kinetic random-dot displays that specified three-dimensional cubes. The cubes were identical except for the presence or absence of an interior corner. Half of the infants viewed the full display. The other half viewed the central region of the displays, where the flow specifying the presence or absence of the corner differed. Infants in the full-view condition looked significantly longer to a novel cube than to the familiar cube following habituation. In contrast, i

Absence of habituation to repeated exposures to a rotating optokinetic drum with brief intersession intervals.

The purpose of this study was to investigate whether participants would habituate to repeated exposures to a rotating drum with brief intersession intervals. Participants were 41 college students, divided into a High Susceptibility group and a Low Susceptibility group based on their subjective symptoms of motion sickness during the first exposure to the rotating drum. The study consisted of three 16-min. exposures to a rotating drum with intersession intervals of 30 min. Contrary to expectation, for the High Susceptibility group, the symptom score mean of the first session was significantly le

A major effect of recording site on measurement of electrodermal activity.

Although the medial phalanx has been recommended as the preferred site for recording skin conductance activity, a review of articles published in Psychophysiology indicates that a large minority (34%) of studies employ the distal phalanx. Informal observations also suggest that the distal site may be more reactive than the medial site. This study formally tests this observation by recording skin conductance from both medial and distal phalanges. Twenty-four right-handed subjects (12 male, 12 female) were exposed to a series of 10 orienting and defensive stimuli. Electrodes were placed on the f

8-OH-DPAT does not interfere with habituation to motion-induced emesis in cats.

Experiments were performed to determine if suppression of motion-induced emesis (motion sickness) by 8-OH-DPAT altered the development or retention of habituation to the motion stimulus. Cats received 8-OH-DPAT followed by provocative motion on three consecutive treatment days. A drug-free test on the fourth day resulted in an incidence of emesis that was not different from that obtained on the fourth consecutive day of drug-free motion testing. Three consecutive days of treatment with 8-OH-DPAT without motion had no effect on the incidence of motion sickness on the fourth day. It was conclude

Drugs and psychological treatments for agoraphobia/panic and obsessive-compulsive disorders: a review.

In the short term, both antidepressants and exposure therapy usually improve agoraphobia/panic (AP) and obsessive-compulsive (OC) disorders and are accepted by most patients; psychological methods omitting exposure are not consistently helpful. Antidepressants have a broad-spectrum rather than specific anti-agoraphobia/panic or anti-obsessive-compulsive action. For long-term efficacy, there is good evidence for the value of exposure, but none for drugs. Because of relapse on ceasing drugs, and their side-effects, medication is less useful as the first line of treatment for chronic agoraphobia/

Behavioral characteristics of Roman high avoidance rats homozygous for diabetes insipidus (RHA: di/di).

These experiments studied the behavior of an inbred strain of vasopressin-deficient rat, the Roman high avoidance rat homozygous for diabetes insipidus (RHA: di/di). The RHA: di/di rat has been bred to be congenic with the parent normal Roman high avoidance (RHA: +/+) strain, differing from it only by the gene(s) coding for diabetes insipidus. Therefore, the RHA: +/+ strain represents an improved model system with which to study the behavioral effects of vasopressin-deficiency, given recent findings suggesting that considerable behavioral variation exists within the Long-Evans derived Brattleb

The effect of antimotion sickness drugs on habituation to motion.

The effect of antimotion sickness drugs on habituation was studied. Subjects were rotated once a day for 5 d to the malaise III end-point after receiving placebo, 1 mg scopolamine, 10 mg d-amphetamine, or the combination of 0.6 mg scopolamine with 5 mg of d-amphetamine. The placebo scores had a Spearman coefficient of correlation of 0.88 with the initial untreated tests. This demonstrated a high reliability for the M-III end-point and that little habituation resulted from the test design. The combination of 0.6 scopolamine with 5 mg amphetamine produced the fastest rate of habituation closely
