A case of fulminant neonatal Haemophilus influenzae sepsis is presented. A 29-year-old woman presented at 34 weeks gestation with premature labor but with intact membranes. The male infant died 8 h after delivery due to respiratory insufficiency. Ante-mortem blood cultures and post-mortem blood and lung cultures yielded H. influenzae (biotype II) which could not be serotyped. H. influenzae was cultured from the mother's cervix 5 days after delivery. This strain was of the same biotype and also nonserotypable. Serum obtained from the mother exhibited reduced bactericidal activity against the is

Haemophilus influenzae is a gram-negative rod, causing severe infections in childhood, including meningitis, sepsis, epiglottits, pneumonia and otitis. Most of the invasive infections are due to serotype b. Since ampicillin-resistance is increasing, modern cephalosporines like cefotaxime and ceftriaxone are the antibiotics of choice in severe disease. Bacterial meningitis due to Haemophilus influenzae and epiglottitis are both still life-threatening diseases with a lethality of 5% to 25%, and there are severe sequelae in 35% of meningitis cases. Efforts have been made to develop efficacious va

From August 1980 through July 1984, 19 neonates had sepsis due to Haemophilus influenzae. Onset of disease occurred within 48 hours after birth of all the neonates. One neonate was born at term and 18 were born prematurely, including seven neonates born before 28 weeks' gestation. Eight neonates and one fetus died, six of them within 24 hours of birth. Acute chorioamnionitis was present in the placentas. Those neonates with the most severe placental inflammation survived while all of those who died had moderate or only mild chorioamnionitis. Acute villitis was noted in the placentas of three n

Vaccine-preventable diseases that have yet to be eliminated are important to review for the practicing clinician. Haemophilus influenzae type b (Hib) was once the leading cause of bacterial meningitis in young children and now causes rare invasive disease in young children and the elderly. Patients with immunodeficiency and impaired complement response to encapsulated organisms (e.g., sickle cell disease; asplenia) are at particular risk of invasive Hib disease. Recognition of a potential case, prompt management and reporting, and inpatient vaccine administration and education are crucial acti

OBJECTIVES: The objective of this study was to determine the prevalence of specific acquired macrolide resistance genes previously reported as present in clinical isolates of Haemophilus influenzae.
METHODS: A collection of 172 clinical respiratory isolates of H. influenzae, including 59 isolates from cystic fibrosis patients and 27 from non-cystic fibrosis bronchiectasis patients with significant prior macrolide use, was established. This collection was tested for azithromycin susceptibility using Etest and screened for the presence of erm(A), erm(B), erm(C), erm(F), mef(A) and mef(E) using

Haemophilus influenzae is an uncommon cause of bacterial meningitis in adults. This report describes a prospective evaluation of 16 episodes of community-acquired H. influenzae meningitis in a nationwide study on bacterial meningitis. Predisposing conditions were present in eight (50%) of the 16 episodes; the most common predisposing conditions were otitis or sinusitis (five episodes; 31%) and remote neurosurgery or head trauma (three episodes; 19%). One (6%) episode was fatal and hearing loss occurred in four (25%) episodes. It was concluded that H. influenzae meningitis in adults is a diseas

Respiratory disease and poor lamb recruitment have been identified as limiting factors for bighorn-sheep populations. Haemophilus somnus (recently reclassified as Histophilus somni) is associated with respiratory disease in American bison, domestic sheep, and cattle. It is also harbored in their reproductive tracts and has been associated with reproductive failure in domestic sheep and cattle. Therefore, reproductive tract and lung samples from bighorn sheep were evaluated for the presence of this organism. Organisms identified as H. somnus were isolated from 6 of 62 vaginal but none of 12 pre

Haemophilus parasuis is the cause of Glässer's disease and other clinical disorders in pigs. It can also be isolated from the upper respiratory tracts of healthy pigs, and isolates can have significant differences in virulence. In this work, a partial sequence from the 60-kDa heat shock protein (Hsp60) gene was assessed as an epidemiological marker. We analyzed partial sequences of hsp60 and 16S rRNA genes from 103 strains of H. parasuis and other related species to obtain a better classification of the strains and examine the correlation with virulence. The results were compared with those ob

Haemophilus parainfluenzae was isolated from the bile specimens of 2 patients with acute cholecystitis. The strains were genetically unrelated by the random amplified polymorphic DNA (RAPD). The 2 H. parainfluenzae strains represented 11.7% of all positive bile cultures inoculated in blood culture bottles. The routine inoculation of bile specimens in media able to support growth of Haemophilus species should be considered.

Haemophilus influenzae type b (Hib) is the leading cause of meningitis in children < 5 years of age. The majority of cases of Hib occur in infants < 2 years of age. Until recently the only vaccine available against this disease contained the pure polysaccharide (PRP) of Hib (Hib-PRP vaccine). The Hib-PRP vaccine was demonstrated to be efficacious in infants > 18 months of age but not below that age. This product was licensed for routine use in the USA for children aged 24 months or more. Recently a hyperimmune globulin termed bacterial polysaccharide immune globulin (BPIg) was prepared by immu

Haemophilus influenzae B was the most frequent pathogen of bacterial meningitis in childhood during the mid-eighties to the end of the eighties of the present century, taking the place of meningococci since approximately 1984 at about twice the rate of that pathogen, as shown by the records kept during 1980-1990 in Bavarian Departments of Paediatrics. In fact, in 1990 the incidence of HIB meningitides was about 2.5 times that of meningococcus meningitides (85 vs. 34, respectively). For practically 2 years now vaccination against HIB is being publicly recommended and should be made use of as in

Our knowledge concerning the pathogenesis of infection due to Haemophilus ducreyi is incomplete. In order to produce disease, H. ducreyi must presumably penetrate the skin of the external genitalia, colonize subcutaneous tissues, then produce tissue damage which results in ulcer formation. Penetration of the normal skin most likely occurs via minor abrasions. Adherence of H. ducreyi to different cell lines in vitro has been described, and might be mediated by adhesions such as pili or haemagglutinins. In addition, binding to extracellular matrix proteins has also been reported. Extracellular t

The sensitizing properties of different doses of the antigenic preparation obtained from H. influenzae by ultrasonic treatment have been studied. Small doses of the antigen have been found to induce immunoallergic transformations of type IV in sensitized guinea pigs. A considerable increase in the sensitizing dose of the antigen has been found to lead to the appearance of allergic reactions of type I. The regularities of the development of allergy to H. influenzae are discussed.

Clinical isolates of Haemophilus ducreyi were shown to be resistant to tetracycline. Resistance was associated in some strains with a 30-megadalton plasmid capable of transferring resistance in conjugative matings with other strains of H. ducreyi and other species of Haemophilus. Restriction endonuclease digestion patterns suggest a relationship between H. ducreyi plasmids and other tetracycline resistance plasmids in Haemophilus. The presence of plasmid-mediated resistance to the tetracyclines limits the use of these agents for the treatment of chancroid.

Seven of the 96 ampicillin-resistant isolates of Haemophilus ducreyi reported in the preceding article (Bilgeri et al., Antimicrob. Agents Chemother. 22:686-688, 1982) were investigated and found to harbor plasmids of 3.95, 5.2, 5.8, and 6.4 megadaltons. All except the 5.8-megadalton plasmid have been shown to code for beta-lactamase. The 6.4- and 5.2-megadalton plasmids of three isolates were conjugally transferable to a streptomycin-resistant mutant of H. ducreyi at high frequencies, perhaps due to the presence in these strains of a high-molecular-weight plasmid.

Three of 19 strains of Haemophilus ducreyi, isolated during a recent outbreak of chancroid, were found to produce beta-lactamase and to harbor a 6.0 x 10(6)-dalton plasmid. Escherichia coli transformed with this plasmid acquired beta-lactamase-mediated resistance to ampicillin. The guanine-plus-cytosine content of the plasmid was found to be 41 mol%. Restriction endonuclease digestion studies suggest that a relatively large portion of the Tn1 translocon is carried by this plasmid. Whereas this plasmid could not be transferred to H. influenzae by mating on membrane filters, a strain of H. ducre

During bacteriophage studies on Haemophilus influenzer, it was observed that encapsulated type b and unencapsulated Rb strains released a bactericidal substance acitve against types a, c, d, e, and f H. influenzae, non-typable H. influenzae strains, other Haemophilus species, and certain members of the Enterobacteriaceae. The bactericidal activity was assayed by a plaque test utilizing an Rd strain as an indicator lawn and was also demonstrated in mixed broth cultures of a producer strain and an indicator strain. Immediately lysis of sensitive bacteria by the factor was not evident. The factor
