BACKGROUND: Hallux valgus (HV) has been previously associated with psychological disorders. Thus, the purposes of this study were to associate kinesiophobia and pain intensity with HV deformity degrees, as well as predict kinesiophobia and pain intensity based on HV deformity and demographic features.
METHODS: A cross-sectional study was carried out recruiting 100 subjects, who were divided into HV deformity degrees, such as I-no HV (n = 25), II-mild (n = 25), III-moderate (n = 25), and IV-severe (n = 25) HV. Kinesiophobia total and domains (activity avoidance and harm) scores and levels were

The authors took manual and dynamometric measurements of the power of the extensor hallucis longus (EHL) muscle in 100 patients with juvenile hallux valgus and 141 normal patients. Three degrees of valgus deformation were recognized: mild (15-25 degrees), moderate (26-35 degrees), and severe (> 35 degrees). Neither the manual nor the dynamometric measurements showed any difference in EHL power between the normal patients and those with mild valgus deformity. In the patients with moderate valgus deformity, the manual measurement usually showed the EHL force to be the same as that of the normal

BACKGROUND AND STUDY AIMS: Recurrence of the deformity is the most common complication following hallux valgus (HV) surgery correction. The factors influencing patient satisfaction after HV surgery are currently widely debated. The aims of this study was to investigate the association of the radiological recurrence of the HV deformity after distal chevron metatarsal osteotomy (DCMO) and the patient satisfaction.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: One hundred twenty patients (134 feet) with symptomatic moderate or severe HV deformity who underwent distal chevron metatarsal osteotomy (DCMO) at our institut

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the correlation between fourth brachymetatarsia and hallux valgus, and to provide evidence-based support for clinical decision-making.
METHODS: A retrospective analysis was conducted on 68 patients (89 feet) with congenital fourth brachymetatarsia treated between August 2021 and November 2025. All patients were female, aged 18-44 years (mean, 28.1 years). The hallux valgus angle (HVA), intermetatarsal angle (IMA), and shortening length of the fourth metatarsal were measured on standardized weight-bearing anteroposterior foot X-ray films. Hallux valgus-related complic

Percutaneous technics became more and more popular in the last decade. First published in 2007, the chevron osteotomy is offering the possibility to correct hallux valgus deformity with a burr. With a fixation that evolved, the correction of severe deformity became possible. It is the mini-invasive chevron Akin. Literature reveals different name depending on the company: percutaneous, extra-articular reverse-L chevron; percutaneous, intra-articular, chevron osteotomy; or percutaneous chevron and Akin osteotomy.

BACKGROUND: Hallux valgus is a common condition with a complex etiology resulting in numerous treatment options. Recurrence of the deformity can occur following correction. Surgical technique and possibly also postoperative care play a role in reducing recurrence rates. This article highlights a postoperative surgical dressing technique which allows for semirigid support during the immediate postoperative period.
METHODS: A wooden tongue depressor placed along the medial border of the hallux comprises the primary support for the dressing. The rigidity of the tongue depressor allows for the ha

Rotation of the first metatarsal (M1) as a potential etiological factor of hallux valgus (HV) deformity was described relatively early in the description of HV pathoanatomy. However, because biplanar radiographs have been the standard method for imaging HV, clinicians primarily developed measurement methods and corrective operations confined to 2 dimensions, medial-lateral and inferior-superior. Recently, as our understanding of HV pathoanatomy has further developed, aided in part by advanced imaging technology, M1 rotation about its axis ("axial rotation") and its implications for HV deformit

This investigation aimed to better understand the complex relationship of common radiographic measurements performed during the perioperative evaluation of the hallux valgus deformity while accounting for interactions and potential interdependence. Several analyses utilizing the first intermetatarsal angle, hallux valgus angle, tibial sesamoid position, Engel's angle, subject age and subject gender were performed with varying independent and dependent variables. The hallux valgus angle (p < .001), tibial sesamoid position (p < .001), and Engel's angle (p < .001) were found to be independently

Complications following hallux valgus (HV) reconstruction will have an expected incidence of between 10% and 55% of cases. The more commonly reported complications include undercorrection/recurrence, overcorrection (hallux varus), transfer metatarsalgia, nonunion, malunion, avascular necrosis, arthritis, hardware removal, nerve injury, and ultimately patient dissatisfaction. The presence of arthritis will be an indication for fusion, whereas osteotomies will be the procedure of choice if the first metatarsophalangeal joint is healthy. Wide experience in primary HV surgery is advised before dea

BACKGROUND: Hallux valgus (HV) adversely affects quality of life. Patients frequently express concerns regarding postoperative foot appearance, foot width and footwear anticipations. However, only scarce data are available regarding postoperative foot width.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Seventy-one cases with moderate to severe HV treated with scarf osteotomy were included. The average age was 55.7 years (range, 20-76), with average follow-up of 20.7 months (range, 6-96). Patients' medical records were reviewed for demographic, operative, and radiographic data. Foot width was assessed radiographica

Hallux valgus-the most common forefoot deformity-can cause both pain and decreased mobility. The development and progress of the hallux valgus is a multifactorial process. Different intrinsic and extrinsic causes are responsible. Various conservative and operative treatment options exist and have to been chosen regarding the stage of the disease. Conservative orthopedic measures may prevent a deterioration of hallux valgus only at an early stage of the disease. Concerning operative techniques, more than 150 different surgical procedures are described in the literature, which can be reduced to

Endoscopic distal soft-tissue procedure is one of the minimally invasive techniques for correction of the hallux valgus deformity. It employs the same principle as the open procedure. The intermetatarsal angle is corrected by screw and interosseous suture instead of first metatarsal osteotomy. The associated procedures of first metatarsal derotation, medial collateral ligament reconstruction, and arthroscopic Lapidus arthrodesis can tackle various problems faced during the endoscopic distal soft-tissue procedure.

Transfer metatarsalgia is a recognized complication following hallux valgus surgery, usually as a result of shortening of the first metatarsal. In this article, the authors present an overview of the incidence, presentation, and treatment strategies employed in its management.

BACKGROUND: We describe using the scarf osteotomy to correct a recurrent hallux valgus deformity and lengthen the shortened first metatarsal in symptomatic iatrogenic first brachymetatarsia.
METHODS: Thirty-six lengthening scarf osteotomies were undertaken in 31 patients. Clinical and radiographic measures were taken pre and postoperatively.
RESULTS: Mean age at presentation was 53.4 years, and mean followup 3.9 years. The mean lengthening achieved was 4.9mm. All osteotomies united with no complications. The mean IMA reduction was 4.0° (p<0.001) and HVA 13.0° (p<0.001). The mean AOFAS score
