Background: Thumb and multiple finger amputations may result in a metacarpal and a metacarpal-like hand deformity. Toe-to-hand transfer is a recognised treatment strategy for this deformity but has risks and is resource intensive. The aim of this study is to conduct a systematic review of the outcomes of toe-to-hand transfer for traumatic metacarpal and metacarpal-like hand deformity in adult patients. Methods: Multi-database searching with index and free text terms, duplicate standardised screening and extraction, and quality assessment was performed. The inclusion and exclusion criteria were

INTRODUCTION: Radial club hand deformity acquired post haematogenous osteomyelitis of radius bone is a very rare disease. Resulting in functional and cosmetic deficit of upper limb which is similar to congenital cases. For a long-time various surgeons attempted to reconstruct the deformity by bone grafting, plating, Ilizarov, monorail external fixator, callus distraction and so on. Keeping in mind that creating single bone forearm we proposed centralization of ulna on wrist to correct the deformity.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: In our institute, we conducted a rare study involving small number of p

The severity of deformational plagiocephaly is frequently measured by cranial vault asymmetry (CVA). Cranial vault asymmetry is a simple linear proxy for the three-dimensional deformity. Different anthropometric landmarks have been suggested as the endpoints of the cross-cranial diagonals that determine CVA. One promising albeit counterintuitive set of digital landmarks is the frontozygomaticus and contralateral eurion. The validity of nondigital caliper measures associated with the diagonals defined by the frontozygomaticus and contralateral eurions has not been tested. In this study, the aut

We present a case of a boy with a congenital upper-extremity malformation, including aplasia of the radius, double ulna, aplasia of the thumb, and polydactyly with a 17-year postoperative follow-up. The whole extremity, particularly the upper arm and shoulder girdle were hypoplastic. There was restriction of movement of the elbow and a flexion contracture of the wrist. At an age of 2 years he had three hypoplastic fingers resected and pollicisation of the third accessory finger. The thenar was reconstructed by interosseous muscle transfers and the flexion contracture corrected by a flexor tend

INTRODUCTION: Epidermolysis bullosa (EB) is a rare disease involving the skin with the formation of synechiae and cicatricial retractions, especially on the hands. The objective of this study is the evaluation of the surgical technique of debridement of the amorphous hand in patients suffering from EB.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: All patients were treated according to the ethical principles of the Helsinki declaration. Data collection was performed in terms of patient's hospitalization time, healing time (healing for more than 90% of the epidermis), possible recurrence and reoperation times, Visual

BACKGROUND: The Neurological Hand Deformity Classification (NHDC) is an impairment-based tool that classifies hand deformity into one of two ordinal scales: flexion or extension deformities. Classification is made from live observation or from recorded video footage. Differentiation between the levels is determined by wrist position and wrist and finger movement.
PURPOSE: To examine aspects of validity and reliability of the NHDC.
STUDY DESIGN: A measurement study design.
METHODS: Data from a convenience sample of 127 children with cerebral palsy, 66 males: 61 females, ranging in age from 8

Thumb reconstruction in mirror hands is usually done by pollicization. However, objective pinch strength and power grip data in mirror hands following pollicization are lacking. Alternative thumb reconstruction techniques include doing nothing, rotation osteotomy or syndactylization of the radial digits. In this article, we report a series of four cases of mirror hand deformity where the thumb was not reconstructed by formal pollicization. Two cases had non-classic mirror hand deformity (the forearm contained a radius and an ulna) and the other two had classic ulnar dimelia. In all cases, thum

Two main types of cleft hands have been described. The ulnar cleft hand deformity is very rare and is characterized by two constant features: a deep cleft radial to the little finger and hypoplasia of the ulnar digits. The pathogenesis of ulnar clefts is unknown. The second type is the central cleft hand deformity, which is characterized by a soft tissue/bone defect in the hand centrally. Patients with central clefts also have several concurrent deformities in the remaining digits. This paper reviews the clinical features of three cases with ulnar cleft hands and 44 cases of central cleft hand

A 24-year-old man, who was late attaining developmental milestones and tested in the severely mentally retarded range, had incurred third- and fourth-degree burns at 2.5 years that resulted in a deformed, anesthetic, and useless distal left upper limb. Following wrist disarticulation, he was fitted with a cosmetic prosthesis that he accepted enthusiastically. It permitted him to use his left upper limb as an effective assister. Attempts to wear and use a functional prosthesis were not successful because the bulbous stump was covered with abnormal skin that ulcerated whenever he wore the prosth

OBJECTIVE: To identify hand function problems and the reasons for choosing a specific finger splint in patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) and swan neck deformities.
METHODS: A qualitative study was performed alongside a randomized, controlled cross-over trial comparing the effectiveness of two types of finger splints (the silver ring splint [SRS] and the prefabricated thermoplastic splint [PTS]) in 50 patients with RA and swan neck deformities. Questions on the patients' main hand function problem and reasons for choosing a specific splint type were performed at baseline and after using

BACKGROUND: Clubfoot, or talipes equinovarus (TEV), is an autosomal dominant foot malformation characterized by a variable clinical picture, ranging from mild to severe deformity. While its genetic basis has been partly elucidated, the underlying molecular mechanisms remain incompletely understood.
METHODS: We investigated a five-generation Polish family presenting autosomal dominant clubfoot associated with arthrogrypotic hand deformation. Genotyping was performed to identify variants co-segregating with the phenotype. Aberrant splicing effects were assessed in the proband's sample, and func

OBJECTIVE: DIP joint OA is common but has few cost-effective, evidence-based interventions. Pain and deformity [radial or ulnar deviation of the joint or loss of full extension (extension lag)] frequently lead to functional and cosmetic issues. We investigated whether splinting the DIP joint would improve pain, function and deformity.
METHODS: A prospective, radiologist-blinded, non-randomized, internally controlled trial of custom splinting of the DIP joint was carried out. Twenty-six subjects with painful, deforming DIP joint hand OA gave written, informed consent. One intervention joint an

A patient with a painful, severe crossover third toe presented approximately 30 years after a second toe-to-hand transfer. He was successfully treated with multiple digital ray transposition. This procedure can realign the lesser toe, close the toe web, and eliminate the need for lifelong use of a toe filler.

Striatal hand is a deformity encountered in Parkinson's disease and other parkinsonisms. It is characterized by extension that occurs at all the interphalangeal joints, flexion at the metacarpophalangeal joints, and ulnar deviation. It can be differentiated from levodopa-induced dystonia and primary dystonia, since the deformity exists continuously even during sleep. We experienced a case of Parkinson's disease with severe striatal hand deformity which was successfully treated by deep brain stimulation of the subthalamic nucleus (STN-DBS). Although the precise mechanism remains unclear, rigidi

BACKGROUND: Familial hypercholesterolemia is an autosomal dominant disorder characterized by elevated serum low-density lipoprotein cholesterol levels, tendon xanthomas, and an increased risk of atherosclerotic heart disease. Diagnosing familial hypercholesterolemia at an early age is crucial owing to its potential to lead to severe cardiovascular complications, including coronary heart disease and aortic valve disease. Early detection allows timely intervention, such as lifestyle modifications and pharmacological treatments, which can significantly reduce these risks.

BACKGROUND: The accuracy rate of pedicle screws placement in the deformed spine can be easily assessed on computed tomography (CT), while it is difficult to be evaluated in conventional radiography in the posterior-anterior (PA) and lateral projections, even if they are an essential step to identify wrong positioned screws after surgery. Aim of the study is to evaluate the accuracy of plain radiographs compared with CT in identifying wrong positioned pedicle-screws in the deformed spine.
METHODS: A total of 1125, pedicle screws implanted with free hand technique in 79 patients surgically trea

PURPOSE: To demonstrate the utility of computed tomography angiographic planning of a single-stage, complete release of syndactyly in Apert syndrome.
METHODS: Computed tomography angiograms were performed as a preoperative planning tool in 6 patients. Five came to surgery. All had a single-stage operation for complete release of their syndactyly.
RESULTS: Five patients, ranging from Upton type 1 to type 3 Apert hand deformities, have had preoperative computed tomography angiography that delineated the vascular anatomy. This allowed planning and execution of a single-stage syndactyly release
