[Results of treatment for high-pressure injection hand injuries].

High-pressure injection injuries of the hand have a reputation for being dangerous for individual fingers and even for whole hand. Usually appearing innocuous at presentation because of small puncture entry wound, these injuries result in severe damage of most internal structures in finger and hand due to extensive penetration of injected substance. This paper reviews the outcome of the treatment of such injuries in 10 patients: 9 sustained injection of toxic paint, and one lead shot. All the patients were operated on: eight a few hours after injury and two with 3 days delay. The surgical tech

Predisposing factors to industrial hand injuries in Saudi Arabia.

A prospective study was performed on 108 consecutive cases of industrial hand injuries in Saudi Arabia to highlight predisposing factors to injury. Traumatic amputations and fractures of the radial three digits were the commonest injuries. Eighty patients (74%) worked for more than 8 hours per day, which is against Saudi labour law. Only 5% of the injured workers had similar jobs previously or formal training prior to employment. The majority (81%) admitted that safety measures were not being followed at the time of injury. Ten workers (9%) had a previous history of industrial hand injury. It

Imaging of acute injuries to the wrist and hand.

This article reviews the basic characteristics of common fractures and dislocations in the hand and wrist. There is increasing recognition that fractures and dislocations of the hand and wrist can result in long-term pain and dysfunction. This article includes descriptions and, when helpful, classifications for these fractures with attention to those features that are of prognostic and therapeutic significance. With prompt recognition and proper characterization of these injuries, patients can be triaged to the orthopedic surgeon for early and more aggressive treatment.

Hand dexterity in hospital personnel with multiple needlestick injuries.

OBJECTIVE: To test the hypothesis that multiple needlestick injuries in hospital employees may be due to intrinsic deficits in hand dexterity. DESIGN: A case-control study comparing employees with multiple reported needlestick injuries to those with none. Hand dexterity was tested using the Purdue Pegboard Test, a standardized validated test of hand dexterity. SETTING: A 300-bed, acute care teaching hospital. PARTICIPANTS: Fifteen hospital employees who sustained four or more injuries were compared to 19 controls. RESULTS: No differences were detected in hand dexterity between the case and

Subclinical injuries in lacerations to the forearm and hand.

This report describes the incidence and severity of subclinical injuries to underlying structures in lacerations to the hand and forearm. One hundred consecutive hand and forearm lacerations that penetrated the full thickness of subcutaneous tissue were studied prospectively. Lacerations were explored under either biceps or forearm tourniquets. Injuries, treatment, tourniquet time, causative agent and complications were recorded. In all, 97 patients sustained 100 lacerations. A total of 49 deep injuries were discovered, none of which was detected clinically before exploration. Of these, 33 wer

Pathophysiology of overuse injuries in the hand and wrist.

Injury from overuse is an important and increasingly common problem in athletes and health-conscious people. The unaccustomed application of repetitive stress to any tissue may cause sufficient structural disruption to overcome that tissue's adaptive ability and thus cause injury without necessarily causing complete loss of function. The events leading to injury, as well as the level of stress required to incite them, may vary depending on the tissue and the individual. The pathway common to all tissues most likely involves microdamage to tissue collagen, combined with a direct or indirect eff

Medico-economic implications of industrial hand injuries in India.

625 five consecutive cases of industrial hand injuries attending the Employee's State Insurance Hospital, Jaipur, have been studied from 1983 to October 1986. The incidence of injuries was 36 per 10,000 workers per year. 47% were due to entrapment of the hand in active machines, 25% occurred during lifting and transportation of heavy objects and 12% while handling tools. The injuries resulted in residual deficit in 55% of cases and were serious enough to require absence from work of more than four weeks in 48% of cases. On an average 35 days were lost per injured worker. The average economic l

Tool design for prevention of hand and wrist injuries.

Incorrect hand tool designs can cause a variety of cumulative trauma disorders. Design elements of size, shape, texture, purpose, ease of operation, shock absorption, and weight must be properly applied in the design process to fulfill the physical safety needs of consumers and working people and to prevent the appearance of pathologic changes in the tissues of the hand and wrist.

Low velocity hand-gun injuries of the maxillofacial region.

In contrast to the number of reports in the literature describing high velocity injuries of the maxillo-facial region, there are relatively few which deal with civilian type gunshot injuries. The purpose of this study was to undertake a retrospective analysis of 40 cases of low-velocity hand-gun injuries of the maxillo-facial region. The majority of cases were due to assault followed by accidental shootings and failed suicide attempts. Injuries ranged from mild soft tissue damage without fractures to severe, comminuted fractures of the facial bones. In some cases, soft tissue damage was severe

Case report: treatment of catbite injuries of the hand.

Catbite or scratch injuries frequently contain mixed organisms, and penicillin or erythromycin alone may not give adequate coverage, as shown in the cases described. Incision and drainage should not be neglected or deferred when a deep infectious process is present or bones, joints, or tendon sheaths are involved. Finally, a catbite injury is a deep penetration injury with potentially virulent organisms that require close followup and awareness of potential problems.

Pulley, Flexor, and Extensor Tendon Injuries of the Hand.

Tendon injuries represent the second most common injury of the hand (after fractures) and are a common scanning indication in radiology. Pulley injuries are very frequent in rock climbers with the A2 pulley the most commonly affected. Tendon and pulley injuries can be reliably evaluated using ultrasound (US) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). US can be postulated as a first-line imaging modality, allowing dynamic examination. MRI is essential for cases with ongoing diagnostic doubt post-US and also for preoperative pulley reconstruction assessment.

Management of complications relating to complex traumatic hand injuries.

Complex hand injuries result in local trauma to osseous, neurovascular, and soft tissue structures. The large amount of energy imparted to these tissues may result in complex regional pain syndrome, stiffness, or infection. Unfortunately, a good outcome may not only depend on the technical aspects of the procedure but on the expectations, occupation, age, and other factors that are out of the surgeon's control. The best treatment for these complications is prevention; however, this review offers strategies to combat the complications once they arise.

Acute tendon injuries in the hand and their management.

Acute tendon injuries to the hand are common. In the UK, there are approximately 12000 inpatient admissions annually for injuries to the tendons and muscles of the hand and wrist (Dew, 2009). Hand injuries involving the dominant hand can cause long-term disability if not appropriately managed. Diagnosis of tendon injuries in the hand relies on careful clinical assessment, particularly if flexor and extensor tendon injuries are not to be missed. This article describes the tendon structure, explains the causes of tendon injury and discusses their assessment and management for a foundation level

Results of the treatment of major, complex hand injuries.

UNLABELLED: Complex hand injuries are associated with serious consequences including long period off-work, permanent disability, inability to return to original profession or to work at all. As these injuries are common, they create considerable economical consequences and, therefore, it is desirable their treatment would be as perfect as possible to reduce potential loss of function. The aim of the study was analysis of the structure of complex, multi-structural hand injuries and evaluation of the outcomes of the treatment of these injuries in both medical (recovery of function) and economica

Prevention of high-pressure injection injuries to the hand.

OBJECTIVES: To identify populations at high risk for, and the usual mechanisms of injury in, high-pressure injection injuries to the hand. METHODS: A case note review of a historical cohort of 76 patients, presenting with high-pressure injections injuries to the hand over a 12-year period, collected information including sex, age, hand dominance, and occupation of the patient and mechanism of injury, when documented. RESULTS: Eighty-two percent of these injuries were work-related, affecting mainly manual workers (84%), including 13 painters, 10 mechanics, 8 farmers, and 3 water blasters. The

Acute hand and wrist injuries in experienced rock climbers.

BACKGROUND: The sport of rock climbing has its own spectrum of injuries, almost half of which involve the wrist and hand. OBJECTIVE: To examine the incidence of acute wrist and hand injuries in 545 members of The Climbers' Club of Great Britain. METHOD: A total of 1100 questionnaires were sent to current members of The Climbers' Club of Great Britain for them to detail any hand and wrist injuries sustained to date. In decade years, the climbing grades and time spent climbing at each grade were determined. From these results a total and historic climbing intensity score for each climber could

Epidemiology of amputations and severe injuries of the hand.

In a prospective population-based study, all open hand, wrist, and forearm injuries that were treated during a 10-year period, at hospitals and emergency wards in three Norwegian cities with 225,000 inhabitants, were registered. Injury severity was graded using the abbreviated injury scale (AIS). For moderate injuries (AIS 2) overall incidence (95% CI) was 59 (56-62), incidence among males 92 (86-98), and among females 28 (25-31) per 100,000 person-years. For severe injuries (AIS > or = 3), overall incidence (95% CI) was 7.5 (6.3-8.6), incidence among males 11.1 (9.1-13.1), and among females 4
