Bipolar pulsed electromagnetic stimulation applied to the brain (T-PEMF) is a non-pharmacological treatment which has been shown to stimulate nerve growth, attenuate nerve abnormalities, and improve microcirculation. We report on a 62-year-old, medically well-treated man with idiopathic Parkinson's disease. He was treated with T-PEMF, 30 min per day for three 8-week periods separated by two 1-week breaks. The disease made his handwriting impossible to read mainly due to small letters and lack of fluency. Forearm EMG measured during standardized conditions showed an involuntary spiky EMG patter

Development of fine motor functions, especially drawing and handwriting, are crucial for performance in school, autonomy in everyday life and the general human development. A variety of neurological and psychiatric conditions in childhood and adolescence stunt the normal development of fine motor skills. We sought to define the normal development of the kinematic parameters of fine motor movement and determine the influence of gender, laterality of handedness and extracurricular training on fine motor skills. One hundred and eighty-seven children and adolescents (mean age: 11.6 years (+/-S.D.:

The impact of visual cognition and memory mechanisms on the acquisition of foundational literacy skills have widely been highlighted in the literature. Visual complexity (VC) and frequency of graphemes (FG) vary across orthographies. The alphasyllabary writing system of the Amharic language has a large grapheme size and several particular linguistic and visuo-perceptual features. This study examines the effects of visual complexity and frequency of the Amharic graphemes on grapheme identification and handwriting legibility skills in typically-developing children in order to draw implications f

INTRODUCTION: Occupational therapists play a crucial role in supporting students' participation in primary school by assessing factors that influence their performance. Measurement tools are essential for identifying supports and barriers to participation; however, their alignment with the International Classification of Functioning, Disability, and Health-Child and Youth Version remains unclear.
OBJECTIVE: This scoping review was aimed at identifying available measurement tools used in occupational therapy practice in the primary school setting and mapping their focus according to the Intern

We studied 18 patients with essential tremor for difficulty with handwriting, drinking, eating, fine manipulations, and embarrassment. Propranolol and primidone reduced the amplitude of both postural and kinetic tremor. Handwriting, drinking, and eating were improved with therapy, but fine manipulations and motor performance on tapping and pegboard tests were unaltered. Embarrassment remained unchanged. Essential tremor is not a benign condition; disability can be only partly reversed with drug therapy.

OBJECTIVE: To review the role of handwriting analysis in psychiatry.
METHOD: Case-report and review of key papers.
RESULTS: M, a 27-year-old man, presented with incoherent speech, palilalia, logoclonia, incongruous affect, paranoid delusions and auditory hallucinations. M was diagnosed with schizophrenia and cannabis misuse, complicated by speech and language difficulties. M spent long periods writing on pieces of paper; towards the start of his admission, his writing was unintelligible but became more intelligible as his psychosis resolved. M's handwriting demonstrates clinical features of

This pilot study is to investigate the influence of a developmental coordination disorder (DCD) comorbidity in a group of children with learning disability (LD). Reading and writing were assessed to investigate if the coexistence of a motor impairment can worsen writing quality, speed, and reading accuracy. A sample of 33 LD children (aged 7-11 years) was divided in two subgroups, on the base of their scores on the Movement Assessment Battery for Children: LD-only (n = 14) and LD with a comorbidity for DCD (LD-DCD, n = 19). No differences were found in handwriting speed, but significant differ

Focal hand dystonia may arise as a result of aberrant plasticity from excessive repetitive use. Improvement might be possible with appropriate motor training. Focusing on trying to decrease abnormal overflow of movement to fingers not involved in a task, we developed a motor training program for individualized finger movements. Ten patients with writer's cramp participated in the motor training program. Evaluation was done with the Fahn dystonia scale, kinematic analysis of handwriting, transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS), and electroencephalography (EEG). Clinical improvement of dystonia

Progressive micrographia, characterized by a gradual reduction in handwriting size, is a common yet incompletely understood feature of Parkinson's disease (PD). It has been associated with both motor and cognitive impairment; however, the clinical characteristics associated with progressive micrographia and the relative contributions of motor and cognitive factors remain unclear. This study aimed to investigate the motor, cognitive, and disease-related clinical features associated with progressive micrographia in PD. Thirty-nine individuals with PD underwent handwriting assessment, the Mini-Me

Classical neuropsychological models of writing separate central (linguistic) processes common to oral spelling, writing and typing from peripheral (motor) processes that are modality specific. Damage to the left superior parietal gyrus, an area of the cortex involved in peripheral processes specific to handwriting, should generate distorted graphemes but not misspelled words, while damage to other areas of the cortex like the frontal lobe should produce alterations in written and oral spelling without distorted graphemes. We describe the clinical and neuropsychological features of a patient wi

The recognition of handwritten Arabic characters offerings a multifaceted challenge that holds fundamental standing across domains such as document digitization, human-computer interaction, and assistive technologies. Arabic script's cursive form combined with positional character variations and diverse handwriting styles creates substantial obstacles for traditional machine learning techniques. In this study, we propose a deep Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) architecture tailored for the classification of isolated handwritten Arabic letters. The dataset includes 28 classes representing the

IMPORTANCE: Students with dysgraphia often receive test accommodations to enhance their handwriting legibility or speed. However, these accommodations are seldom individualized to ensure that they actually improve the performance of a specific student. Therefore, a need exists for an evidence-based protocol (henceforth, the Protocol) for selecting individually tailored test accommodations for students with dysgraphia.
OBJECTIVE: To establish the Protocol's content validity, interrater reliability, and preliminary outcomes through a pilot study.
DESIGN: Descriptive and exploratory design.

Micrographia, characterised by small handwriting, is often linked to Parkinson's disease, but also resulted to injured brain lesions. The left-handed women in her 20s developed 'fast micrographia' after a traumatic brain injury from a traffic accident, showing bilateral subdural haematomas and frontal lobe contusions, but she had no paralysis and extrapyramidal symptoms. Neuropsychological tests showed reduced processing speed and memory deficits, aligning with frontal lobe damage. A 3-month handwriting training programme improved performance with cues, but issues persisted without them. This

AIM: Handwriting abilities in children with dyslexia (DYS) are not well documented in the current literature, and the presence of graphomotor impairment in addition to spelling impairment in dyslexia is controversial. Using resting-state functional connectivity (RSFC), the present study aims to answer the following question: are there markers of graphomotor impairment at rest in DYS children?
METHOD: The participants were children with DYS and typically developing (TD) children (n = 32) from French-speaking primary schools (Mage = 9.3 years). The behavioural evaluation consisted of spelling a

Parkinson's disease (PD) is a progressive neurological disorder that impairs movement control, leading to symptoms such as tremors, stiffness, and bradykinesia. Early and accurate PD detection is essential for effective management and improving patient outcomes. Many researchers analyzing handwriting data for PD detection typically rely on computing statistical features over the entirety of the handwriting task. While this method can capture broad patterns, it has several limitations, including a lack of focus on dynamic change, oversimplified feature representation, a lack of directional info

INTRODUCTION: The neural substrates associated with the development of micrographia remain unknown. We aimed to elucidate the neural substrates underlying micrographia in Parkinson's disease (PD) patients.
METHODS: Forty PD patients and 20 healthy controls underwent handwriting tests that involved free writing and copying. We measured the size of each letter and the resting cerebral glucose metabolic rate of the PD patients and another group of age- and sex-matched 14 healthy controls (HCs), who had not participated in the writing tests, using resting-state 18F-fluorodeoxyglucose positron emi

Parkinson's disease (PD) is a progressive neurodegenerative disorder characterized by motor and non-motor impairments, where early diagnosis remains challenging due to reliance on subjective clinical assessments. Recent artificial intelligence (AI)-based approaches have demonstrated promise in identifying subtle PD biomarkers from individual modalities such as speech, gait, and handwriting; however, unimodal systems often fail to capture the heterogeneity of the disease and provide limited interpretability. To address these limitations, this study proposes a multimodal deep learning framework

We describe the cognitive analysis of a patient with acquired pure dysgraphia. She presented a peculiar dissociation between lower- and upper-case handwriting: lower-case writing was relatively spared and showed a significant superiority of words versus nonwords. Upper-case writing and oral spelling did not show lexical effects, but were affected by item length. In all modalities errors consisted mainly of single graphemic substitutions, deletions, insertions and transpositions, resulting in legal or illegal nonwords, and showed a similar distribution across letter positions. These findings we

Micrographia is a symptom characterized by abnormally small handwriting and is a common motor symptom in Parkinson's disease. Two subtypes-consistent micrographia (CM) and progressive micrographia (PM)-are thought to reflect distinct underlying mechanisms. CM has been linked to bradykinesia and often improves with dopaminergic treatment, whereas PM typically persists and may involve altered sensorimotor processing. However, the relative contributions of motor execution, feedback integration, and motor awareness to these subtypes remain unclear. This study investigated whether awareness of moto

The effectiveness of high frequency stimulation of the thalamic nucleus ventralis intermedius (Vim-HFS) for treatment of tremor has been studied by blinded assessment. The effectiveness of thalamotomy for essential tremor of the upper extremity by use of a blinded measure of outcome is now reported. Thalamotomy was performed in 21 patients (three operated on bilaterally) with medically intractable, essential tremor. Assessments of function, handwriting/drawing, and tremor amplitude were done before and at 3 and 12 months after surgery. The handwriting/drawing score was rated by a neurologist b
