Divide or bridge? The heterogeneous effects of digital village participation on rural residents' happiness.

INTRODUCTION: Enhancing rural residents' happiness is a key objective of China's rural revitalization strategy. METHODS: Using data from the China Rural Revitalization Survey (CRRS), this study empirically examines the relationship between digital village participation on rural residents' happiness. RESULTS: The results show that digital village participation is positively associated with rural residents' happiness. Dimensional-specific analyses further reveals that digital infrastructure, digital governance, and the digitalization of daily life exert significant positive effects on rural re

Network analysis of Korean happiness: a comparative study by sex, generation and income level.

AIMS: South Korea has one of the highest suicide rates among Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development countries, and lower happiness has been associated with suicidal ideation and suicide attempts in Korean populations. We aimed to estimate a nation-level item network of happiness, affect, personality and well-being evaluations in South Korea and to test whether this network differed by sex, income and generation. METHODS: We analysed 2020-2023 Korean Happiness Survey data from 64,531 respondents in South Korea; the network analyses used 61,675 complete cases. A Gaussian graphic

Has integrated medical insurance scheme enhanced happiness of returning migrant workers? Evidence from China.

Using four waves of panel data from the China Labor-force Dynamic Survey (CLDS) spanning from 2012 to 2018, regarding gradual reforms of the Integrated Medical Insurance Scheme (IMIS) in China as a quasi-experiment, we establish a time-varying difference-in-differences (DID) model to systematically examine the impact of IMIS on the happiness of returning migrant workers. Further, a structural equation model is employed to explore the potential mechanisms and analyze the heterogeneity of the effect. The results indicate that IMIS significantly enhances the happiness of returning migrant workers

Smoking status, nicotine dependence and happiness in nine countries of the former Soviet Union.

BACKGROUND: The US Food and Drug Administration has established a policy of substantially discounting the health benefits of reduced smoking in its evaluation of proposed regulations because of the cost to smokers of the supposed lost pleasure they suffer by no longer smoking. This study used data from nine countries of the former Soviet Union (fSU) to explore this association in a setting characterised by high rates of (male) smoking and smoking-related mortality. METHODS: Data came from a cross-sectional population-based study undertaken in 2010/2011 in Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Georgia

A blessing I can't afford: factors underlying the paradox of happiness about unintended pregnancy.

An unresolved paradox in the measurement and interpretation of unintended pregnancy is that women frequently report feeling happy about pregnancies they also classify as unintended (i.e. they have incongruent intentions and feelings). This study explores the underlying reasons why women profess such happiness and how these relate to their motivations to avoid pregnancy. Between September 2013 and February 2014, semi-structured in-depth interviews were conducted with 27 women (8 white, 19 Latina) selected from a longitudinal study measuring prospective pregnancy intentions and feelings among 40

How Childhood Maltreatment Shape Attitudes Toward Happiness: The Role of PTSD Symptoms and Self-Compassion.

Childhood maltreatment has emerged as a global concern. While researchers have begun investigating the capacity of adults with childhood maltreatment experiences to pursue happiness (e.g., fear of happiness), the mechanisms and boundary conditions of this relationship remain inadequately understood in the Chinese context. Involving 77,926 participants from 63 universities in Jilin Province, China, this study employed a moderated mediation model to examine the direct and indirect (via PTSD symptoms) associations between childhood maltreatment and fear of happiness, while assessing the moderatin

Effects of emotional culture of joy on employee happiness: A moderated-mediation model in hospitality.

Employee happiness at work is vital for improving performance, engagement, and retention, especially in the hospitality industry. This study explores how an emotional culture of joy (ECJ), a workplace atmosphere that promotes shared feelings of joy and positivity, shapes happiness at work (HaW). Specifically, we examine whether psychological safety (PsySaf) and relational attachment (RA) explain this relationship and whether work autonomy (WA) strengthens these effects. Data were collected from 522 hotel and restaurant employees in Sinop, Türkiye, using a three-wave survey to reduce bias. Resu

Impact of health literacy and subjective happiness in pregnancy on neonatal anthropometry: a cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Maternal health literacy (MHL) and happiness can significantly impact pregnancy outcomes (POs) and neonatal health. This study primarily aimed to assess the level of maternal health literacy. Additionally, we sought to determine how maternal health literacy, happiness, socio-demographics, and pregnancy outcomes influence neonatal anthropometrics, thereby providing a more comprehensive understanding of the determinants of maternal and neonatal health. METHODS: In a 2-year cohort study on 591 pregnant women with normal pregnancies, we recorded the maternal socio-demographic and obst

Circuits regulating pleasure and happiness - focus on potential biomarkers for circuitry including the habenuloid complex.

INTRODUCTION: The multiplicity and complexity of the neuronal connections in the central nervous system make it difficult to disentangle circuits that play an essential role in the development or treatment of (neuro)psychiatric disorders. By choosing the evolutionary development of the forebrain as a starting point, a certain order in the connections can be created. The dorsal diencephalic connection (DDC) system can be applied for the development of biomarkers that can predict treatment response. MATERIALS AND METHODS: After providing a brief introduction to the theory, we examined neuroanat

Adverse childhood experiences, mindfulness and happiness in Chinese college students during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The rise of literature on adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) has indicated a strong relationship between ACEs and negative life outcomes, leading to important implications for services to the population. However, less is known about the effects of ACEs on happiness and the role of mindfulness in this relation. This study examined the relationships between ACEs and happiness and whether mindfulness mediated the effects of ACEs on happiness in a sample of Chinese college students. The data were collected from 1871 college students from 12 colleges across China in September 2020. The findings o

OBJECTIVES: First, to conduct a historical review of the evidence for repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) for major depressive disorder and determine a clinical algorithm. Second, to identify opportunities for research. METHODS: Literature searches were conducted of the MEDLINE database, UpToDate and the Australian National University Library SuperSearch from 1 January 2000 to 30 September 2019. The search terms used were 'transcranial magnetic stimulation', 'major depressive disorder' and 'depression'. RESULTS: There were 24 meta-analyses identified, demonstrating a clear cl

TGI Monday?: drug-dependent outpatients report lower stress and more happiness at work than elsewhere.

In the general population, experience-sampling studies show that work is the aspect of daily life most associated with momentary unhappiness and a desire to be elsewhere. We assessed whether this holds true for urban outpatients in treatment for heroin and cocaine dependence. In a 25-week natural-history study, 79 employed methadone-maintained misusers of heroin and cocaine carried electronic diaries on which mood and behavior were assessed up to five times per day. Being at work was associated with lower stress, greater happiness, and lower drug craving. Work accounted for 14% of the variance

Happy Village Plus: Community-empowered health promotion interventions in Sri Lanka.

BACKGROUND: Non-communicable diseases (NCDs) account for over 80% of deaths in Sri Lanka. Addressing these diseases is challenging due to their complex social, behavioural, and environmental causes. Community-based health promotion programmes focused solely on single risk factors and education provision show limited effectiveness. This study describes Happy Village Plus (HVP), a grassroots, community-based intervention designed to select and implement health promotion interventions aligned with communities' health-related needs in Western Province, Sri Lanka. METHODS: HVP was conducted in six
