A 79-year-old female was admitted to our hospital because of unconsciousness and convulsion following mental deterioration. On admission, she exhibited myoclonic movement of the right side of the face and right fingers in addition to rigospasticity and tremors in the right arm and leg. Laboratory tests revealed hyperthyroidism with an increased anti-TSH-R antibody titer. In addition, an echogram indicated excessive blood flow at the thyroid; hence, the patient was diagnosed with Basedow's disease. Interestingly, the tests also revealed increased titer of anti-TPO antibody, anti-Tg antibody, an

Anti-thyroglobulin antibody (aTg) synthesis by the lymphocytes in the peripheral blood and the thyroid gland were studied in patients with Hashimoto's disease (HD) or Graves' disease (GD), all in euthyroid states, to clarify the mechanism of autoantibody synthesis. The ability of the lymphocytes to synthesize aTg was analyzed in the culture system of lymphocytes incubated in a concentration of 1 X 10(6) cells/ml for 7 days at 37 degrees C in 5% CO2-95% air. The B cells alone were also cultured in the absence of T cells or PWM to estimate their abilities on spontaneous aTg synthesis. The regula

Lysosomial diseases and autoimmune diseases are systemic disorders. Their clinical manifestations can overlap with the broad spectrum of one another. Their association has been rarely reported. We report a new case of systemic lupus erythematous (SLE) associated to antiphospholipid syndrome (APS) and Hashimoto thyroiditis occurring in Niemann-Pick disease (NPD) type B patient. A 42-year-old woman with a familial history of NPD was diagnosed with a NPD type B at the age of ten. Twenty years later (2008), she complained of inflammatory arthralgia with acute dyspnea. She was diagnosed with SLE (a

PROBLEM: Hashimoto's disease is the commonest autoimmune disease of pregnancy. The presence of Anti-Thyroid antibodies (ATAs) alone [subclinical hypothyroidism] has also been shown to have adverse pregnancy effects. These can result in failure to conceive, recurrent miscarriages, anemia, preeclampsia, and abruption. Hashimoto's disease in reproduction can cause difficulty in conception through hormonal interference. It can also cause miscarriages, growth retardation, and preterm birth. The current recommended treatment is the administration of levothyroxine. This corrects the thyroid balance a

Background and objectives: Hashimoto's thyroiditis is an important autoimmune thyroid condition. It is characterized by lymphocytic congestion of the thyroid gland followed by progressive deterioration and fibrous substitution of the thyroid in the parenchymal structure. This study has provided insight into the variations of blood pro-inflammatory cytokine levels in patients with Hashimoto's disease and the key role of vitamin D levels among selected patients. Materials and Methods: A total of 144 participants including healthy controls and patients were studied in the current study in which 1

BACKGROUND: On rare occasions, there can be a transition from Hashimoto's to Graves' disease. However, there are no reported cases of transition from Hashimoto's to Graves' disease triggered by the onset of Guillain-Barré syndrome.
CASE PRESENTATION: Sixteen years prior, a 55-year-old woman was diagnosed with Hashimoto's disease and followed up without medication. One week after the appearance of signs of intestinal inflammation, weakness in the extremities was observed, and a cerebrospinal fluid test was positive for anti-GM1 IgG antibody, leading to the diagnosis of Guillain-Barré syndrome.

BACKGROUND: Hashimoto thyroiditis (HT) is an autoimmune disease which may result in extensive damage of the thyroid gland. Chronic atrophic gastritis (CAG), is the most frequent HT-associated disorder, with anti-parietal cell autoantibodies (APCA) being a screening test for autoimmune CAG. The aim of this study was to investigate, in a cohort of HT patients: a) the prevalence of APCA in an attempt to define their clinical phenotype and b) any possible associations of APCA with other autoimmune diseases and malignancies.
METHODS: This is a single-center, case-control study, conducted at a Univ

BACKGROUND: Autoimmune thyroid disease (AITD) mainly includes Graves' disease (GD) and Hashimoto's thyroiditis (HT), which is caused by individual genetics, autoimmune dysfunction, and a variety of external environmental factors. Interleukin (IL)-38 is involved in a wide range of autoimmune diseases, but little is known about IL-38 expression in AITD.
METHODS: Fifty patients with GD, 50 with HT, and 50 healthy controls (HC) were enrolled in this study. Basic information of the participants was obtained through a physical examination. Immunological data were obtained by an automatic chemilumin

RATIONALE: Hashimoto's encephalopathy (HE) is an autoimmune-mediated encephalopathy rarely seen in Graves' disease, with <20 cases reported previously, associated with elevated concentration of circulating serum anti-thyroid antibodies usually responsive to steroid therapy.
PATIENT CONCERNS: We present a HE case (25-year-old male) with Graves' disease, complicated by fever and pancytopenia. The patient presented with fever, gait impairment, delirium, agitation and disorientation.
DIAGNOSES: Thyroid-related antibodies were elevated and brain magnetic resonance imaging confirmed symmetrical wh

MicroRNA (miRNA) is a family of non-coding RNAs that have important roles in various vital functions. It has been reported that let-7e, a miRNA, may be involved in the regulation of interleukin (IL)-10 production. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the role of let-7e as a regulator of IL-10 production in the pathological processes of autoimmune thyroid diseases (AITDs). We evaluated the association between let-7e expression and intracellular expression of IL-10 in the peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) collected from 11 healthy volunteers. Then we investigated the expression lev

BACKGROUND: Autoimmune thyroid diseases (AITDs) predominantly develop in females. One of two X chromosomes is randomly inactivated by methylation in each female cell, but it has been reported that skewed X chromosome inactivation (XCI) may be associated with the development of autoimmune diseases. To clarify the significance of skewed XCI in the prognosis and development of AITD, we investigated the proportion of skewed XCI in female patients with AITD.
METHODS: We analyzed the degree of XCI skewing in 120 female patients with AITD (77 patients with Graves' disease [GD] and 43 patients with H

We report the case of a 63-year-old woman who suffered from mixed connective tissue disease (MCTD) complicated with thymic carcinoma and Hashimoto's thyroiditis. Although many systemic syndromes associated with thymoma and thymic carcinoma, i.e., myasthenia gravis, pure red cell aplasia, hypogammaglobulinemia, and Hashimoto's thyroiditis, are known, this is the first report of MCTD complicated with thymic carcinoma. It was suggested that MCTD may be a paraneoplastic syndrome associated with thymic carcinoma.

Hyperthyroidism in Graves' disease is caused by thyroid-stimulating autoantibodies to the TSH receptor (TSHR), whereas hypothyroidism in Hashimoto's thyroiditis is associated with thyroid peroxidase and thyroglobulin autoantibodies. In some Graves' patients, thyroiditis becomes sufficiently extensive to cure the hyperthyroidism with resultant hypothyroidism. Factors determining the balance between these two diseases, the commonest organ-specific autoimmune diseases affecting humans, are unknown. Serendipitous findings in transgenic BALB/c mice, with the human TSHR A-subunit targeted to the thy

Encephalopathy associated with autoimmune thyroid disease, currently known as Hashimoto's encephalopathy, but also defined as corticosteroid-responsive encephalopathy associated with autoimmune thyroiditis, is a relatively rare condition observed in a small percentage of patients presenting with autoimmune thyroid disease. It consists of a subacute, relapsing-remitting, steroid-responsive encephalopathy characterised by protean neurologic and neuropsychiatric symptoms, diffuse electroencephalographic abnormalities and increased titres of antithyroid antibodies in serum and/or in cerebrospinal

Autoimmune diseases can accompany cancer either sporadically or as part of certain genetic abnormalities or syndromes. We report on a breast cancer case with both Hashimoto's thyroiditis and vitiligo. To the best of our knowledge, this case constitutes the first breast cancer patient in the literature with both of these two autoimmune diseases. The patient did not have significant genetic abnormalities, so this might be a simple coincidence. Evaluation of cancer cases for the existence of comorbid autoimmune diseases might yield more such cases, and their genetic analyses may be helpful for be

This study investigated serum levels of the soluble form of CD30 (sCD30), which is mainly secreted from T helper 2(Th2) cells, in autoimmune thyroid diseases. The possible relationship of sCD30 to autoantibody production was also evaluated. Serum levels of sCD30 were determined by an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay in 71 patients with Graves' disease, 37 patients with Hashimoto's thyroiditis, and 21 normal donors. Compared with normal subjects (7.1 +/- 4.5 U/mL), sCD30 was increased in patients with Graves' disease (29.2 +/- 25.2 U/mL, P < 0.0001) and in patients with Hashimoto's thyroiditis

We have reported a case of malignant lymphoma in associated with Hashimoto's disease arising in the right lobe of thyroid of a 57-year-old woman. The pre-operative aspirated biopsy was valuable for diagnosis Immuno-histochemical observations revealed the localization of anti B cell antibody in the cell surface of lymphoma cells and anti thyroglobulin antibody in intactly follicular epithelium within the lymphoma tissue. This lymphoma was diagnosed as diffuse, medium cell and B cell type. Radiation and chemotherapy were performed for multiple metastasis of liver and brain, but this case had die
