Developing community-based health education strategies with family history: Assessing the association between community resident family history and interest in health education.

BACKGROUND: Family history (FH) is an underutilized genetically informative tool that can influence disease prevention and treatment. It is unclear how FH fits into the development of community-based health education. This study examines the role that FH plays in perceived threat and health education related to mental and chronic physical conditions in the context of the health belief model. METHODS: Data were collected from 1,048 adult participants aged 18-90 years. Approximately 76% of participants indicated African-American race/ethnicity and 35% had less than high school level education.

A cross-sectional survey was conducted in Guangzhou from February to June 2023 involving 4047 participants. Data were collected on demographics, health literacy, education, socioeconomic status, health behaviors, and self-rated health. Descriptive statistics, logistic regression,

CBE and the Missing 'E': Making Competency-Based Education an Equitable Framework for Global Health Professions Education.

It is generally assumed that competency-based health professions education (CBHPE) is a positive and ongoing educational reform. However, the assumption that CBHPE naturally leads to more equitable outcomes has not been thoroughly examined. This 'Eye Opener' identifies global challenges in implementing equitable CBHPE, with particular attention to majority-world (low- and middle-income) contexts. These tensions include: 1) variable approaches to adoption that limit transferability, 2) uneven infrastructure for implementation and innovation, 3) export of predeveloped conceptual frameworks that

The Mental Health Costs of Shadow Education: The Duration of Shadow Education and Its Depressive Effects on Chinese Adolescents.

Shadow education refers to supplementary educational activities outside of the formal school system, typically provided by private institutions to enhance students' academic performance. This phenomenon has become increasingly prominent worldwide, drawing significant attention from both scholars and the public. While shadow education is often associated with improved academic outcomes, its potential mental health implications for adolescents remain underexplored. Based on four large-scale surveys conducted in China from 2016 to 2022, this study examines the association between the duration of

Work-related violence, lifestyle, and health among special education teachers working in Finnish basic education.

BACKGROUND: Studies have reported higher levels of absenteeism due to illness among special education teachers compared to other teachers, but it is not known which factors might contribute to this difference. We examined whether health, health behaviors, and exposure to violence at work differed between special education and general education teachers in Finnish basic education. METHODS: Survey data from 5760 general and special education teachers were analyzed with multilevel logistic models adjusted for individual- and school-level confounding factors. RESULTS: No difference was found bet

Transforming educator expectations in public health, nursing, and medicine: a two-phase survey on digital tools in education.

The digital transformation of healthcare education has accelerated significantly due to the COVID-19 pandemic, shifting traditional, practice-oriented teaching towards digital methodologies. Before the pandemic, digital teaching was minimally adopted and lacked systematic strategies, especially in Germany’s higher education institutions. This study comprised two cross-sectional online surveys among university faculty in public health, nursing, and medicine—conducted in 2020 and 2021—with a total of 238 participants. The surveys explored the use of digital tools, satisfaction with digital teach

The Caring Professionals Program: educational approaches that integrate caring attitudes and empathic behaviors into health professions education.

Caring attitudes and empathic behaviors are considered by most Americans to be an essential and intrinsic element of appropriate health care, yet little attention is given to this in the curricula of most healthcare professional training programs. This paper describes an ongoing educational intervention to develop healthcare professionals with caring attitudes and empathic behaviors that will be sustained in their professional practice environments. The Caring Professionals Program was designed to enhance and redesign existing learning experiences in four academic programs: physical therapy, o

Decreasing Asthma-Related Health and Educational Inequity Through School-Based Health Services.

BACKGROUND: Asthma is one of the most common chronic diseases of childhood and is a driver of significant health and educational inequity. Despite research demonstrating that school-based asthma interventions can improve health and educational outcomes and advance equity, calls to shift the field to a dissemination and implementation focus have gone largely unanswered. CONTRIBUTIONS TO THEORY: Building upon the foundation of Charles Basch's 2011 "Healthier Students are Better Learners" framework, we summarize relevant findings from the recent literature on school-based asthma interventions. Distressed or De-stressed? Crafting "Mental Health" in University Peer Education and Health Promotion.

In recent years, universities have demonstrated heightened recognition of and concern for students' mental health by expanding mental health services as well as campus-wide mental health promotion campaigns. This article examines peer education -- a growing initiative on American campuses in which students work with their institution to create and deliver health education and awareness campaigns to their peers. I present findings from an ethnographic study including 30 interviews with student peer health educators and their supervisory staff, participant observation among three university prog

Efficacy of health ecology-based health education on early rehabilitation outcomes in stroke patients.

BACKGROUND: Stroke is a leading global cause of disability and mortality in adults, and early rehabilitation is critical for improving patients' functional recovery and quality of life; however, conventional rehabilitation models often focus solely on medical interventions and overlook the impact of the patient's comprehensive ecological environment on recovery, making it necessary to explore more holistic intervention approaches. To investigate the efficacy of health ecology theory-based health education in early stroke rehabilitation and its impacts on neurological/motor/cognitive function,

Does the public health education affect health inequality among the migrant population in China?

BACKGROUND: As an essential component of public health infrastructure, public health education plays an important role in advancing health equity. In China, the large migrant population, while contributing substantially to socioeconomic development, continues to face significant health risks and inequalities due to frequent rural-to-urban mobility and occupational transitions. These issues not only undermine the well-being of migrants but also impede balanced social and economic progress. In this context, the present study systematically investigated the impact of public health education on he

Interprofessional Education in Child Protection for Preservice Health and Allied Health Professionals: A Scoping Review.

Health and allied health professionals are uniquely positioned to collaborate in prevention, early intervention and responses to child maltreatment. Effective collaboration requires comprehensive interprofessional education (IPE), and inadequate collaboration across sectors and professions continually contributes to poor outcomes for children. Little is known about what interprofessional preparation health and allied health professionals receive before initial qualification (preservice) that equips them for interprofessional collaboration and provision of culturally safe care in child protecti

Training on Corrections and Health Within U.S. Academic Health Professions Education: A Scoping Review.

Despite the scale, inequity, and consequences of mass incarceration, health care provider knowledge and awareness on correctional health remain limited. Understanding the educational experiences of health professions learners and the studies used to evaluate them can provide useful information about current gaps to guide future curricular improvement. To address this need, we conducted a scoping review of peer-reviewed studies examining United States-based academic health professions educational programs on correctional health. Studies were coded based on study characteristics, learner outcome
