Women's perspectives on disrespect and abuse experiences during childbirth in a teaching hospital in Southwest Ethiopia: a qualitative study.

There is evidence that women in Ethiopia often face disrespect and abuse in health care facilities during childbirth. Disrespect and abuse (D&A) violate women's right to dignified, respectful health care and decrease their trust in health care facilities. There is a need for more insight into women's perspectives on D&A during childbirth in different contexts. Therefore, this study aimed to explore women's perspectives on D&A during childbirth in a teaching hospital in South-West Ethiopia. A qualitative study was conducted from November 2017 to February 2018 using in-depth interviews and focus

The implications of the Sudan war on healthcare workers and facilities: a health system tragedy.

In light of a collapsing healthcare system in Sudan, attacks on healthcare institutions and staff have markedly increased since the eruption of war on the 15th of April, costing many precious lives and valuable hospitals. Around 60 attacks on health facilities have been reported so far, many occupied by one or the other sides of the conflict, and the rest exhibit medication shortages and safety issues; hence, two-thirds of the medical centers are nonfunctioning. More than 200 violations against medical staff were recorded all over the country, which led to the death of 38 healthcare workers. K

[A report on the inspection of the Shinkansen Multiple Inspection Train].

The multiple inspection train nicknamed "Doctor Yellow" is capable of taking necessary measurements of the track and electrical facilities, and maintains the safety and reliability of the Tokaido Shinkansen corridor. We performed a workplace inspection to examine environmental conditions in this train. The workers were engaged in VDT (visual display terminal) work including the inspection task. The labor environments such as vibration, noise, temperature and lighting, were comfortable. However, some of the working conditions while the Bullet train is running are inevitably restricted. The occu

An audit of maternal deaths from a referral university teaching hospital in Nigeria: the emergence of HIV/AIDS as a leading cause.

AIMS AND OBJECTIVES: To analyse the characteristics and causes of maternal death in a referral tertiary health facility in Southern Nigeria. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This is a facility- based review of 184 maternal deaths that occurred from January 2005 to June 2009. Primary causes of death and factors that contributed to maternal death including delay in accessing health care were identified. RESULTS: During the study period, the Maternal Mortality Ratio (MMR) was 2230/100,000 live births. There was a progressive reduction in the annual MMR from 2901/100,000 live birth in 2005 to 1459/100,000

In the shadow of the asylum: the Stanley Royd Salmonella outbreak of 1984.

In August 1984, an outbreak of Salmonella at Stanley Royd Psychiatric Hospital in Yorkshire led to the deaths of 19 elderly residents. It was an incident that attracted a good deal of comment in both the local and national press, and one that had enduring relevance for ideas about psychiatric care, food handling and catering provisions, hospital management and the official inspection of medical institutions. This article examines the impact that the 1984 outbreak had on official and popular perceptions of these issues. As well as bringing to public attention the fact that large numbers of vuln

The sleep justice study - a prospective cohort study assessing sleep as a cardiometabolic risk factor after incarceration: a protocol paper.

BACKGROUND: An estimated 11 million individuals are released from U.S. jails and prisons each year. Individuals with a history of incarceration have higher rates of cardiovascular disease (CVD) events and mortality compared to the general population, especially in the weeks following release from carceral facilities. Healthy sleep, associated with cardiovascular health, is an underexplored factor in the epidemiology of CVD in this population. Incarcerated people may have unique individual, environmental, and institutional policy-level reasons for being sleep deficient. The social and physical

Detection of a genetically related carbapenemase-producing Escherichia coli ST167 in clinical and environmental isolates: Evidence for clonal spread of carbapenemase-producing Enterobacteriaceae in humans and the environment in Iowa, United States.

BACKGROUND: Carbapenemase-producing Enterobacteriaceae (CPE) are listed by the World Health Organization as one of the critical priority pathogens needing urgent attention to address global resistance to antimicrobials. Thus, the transmission and epidemiology of CPEs need to be studied via One Health perspectives. METHODS: An environmental CPE, referred to as BO1, was isolated from a creek in Northwest Iowa using a Colilert system (IDEXX, Westbrook, ME, USA). The presence of carbapenemase was examined using the modified carbapenem inactivation test, and then phenotypic resistance was determin

Cluster of Influenza A(H5) Cases Associated with Poultry Exposure at Two Facilities - Colorado, July 2024.

Persons who work in close contact with dairy cattle and poultry that are infected with highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) A(H5N1) virus are at increased risk for infection. In July 2024, the Colorado Department of Public Health & Environment responded to two poultry facilities with HPAI A(H5N1) virus detections in poultry. Across the two facilities, 663 workers assisting with poultry depopulation (i.e., euthanasia) received screening for illness; 109 (16.4%) reported symptoms and consented to testing. Among those who received testing, nine (8.3%) received a positive influenza A(H5) virus

Nightingale theory and intentional comfort touch in management of tinea pedis in vulnerable populations.

Vulnerable populations, specifically migrant farm workers and persons experiencing homelessness, are often at an increased risk for foot infections. This risk is related to their working and living conditions, socioeconomic status, limited access to health care, frequent exposure to wet environments, limited access to clean and dry socks and shoes, bathing or laundry facilities, and daily routines that requires them to be on their feet for long periods of time. After years of caring for these populations and hundreds of clinical encounters, an evidence-based, effective method of foot care that

Midwives' perspectives on (dis)respectful intrapartum care during facility-based delivery in sub-Saharan Africa: a qualitative systematic review and meta-synthesis.

BACKGROUND: In the past decade, the negative impact of disrespectful maternity care on women's utilisation and experiences of facility-based delivery has been well documented. Less is known about midwives' perspectives on these labour ward dynamics. Yet efforts to provide care that satisfies women's psycho-socio-cultural needs rest on midwives' capacity and willingness to provide it. We performed a systematic review of the emerging literature documenting midwives' perspectives to explore the broader drivers of (dis)respectful care during facility-based delivery in the sub-Saharan African conte

Chemically reactive protein nanoparticles for synthesis of a durable and deformable superhydrophobic material.

The past few decades have witnessed significant development in the field of artificially biomimicking extremely water repellent interfaces, developed mostly through tedious synthetic processes using synthetic/non-biodegradable polymers and fluorinated derivatives rendering health and environment related hazards. Only a few approaches furnish superhydrophobic materials that can withstand different harsh environments. Here, in this current design, naturally abundant and biodegradable bovine serum albumin (BSA) protein nanoparticles and cotton fibers are rationally selected for environment-friend

Trauma-Informed Care for Violently Injured Patients in the Emergency Department.

Violent traumatic injury remains a common condition treated by emergency physicians. The medical management of these patients is well described and remains an area of focus for providers. However, violently injured patients disproportionately carry a history of physical and psychological trauma that frequently affects clinical care in the emergency department. The alteration of our clinical approach, taking into consideration how a patient's previous experiences influence how he or she may perceive and react to medical care, is a concept referred to as trauma-informed care. This approach is ba

Myths and facts: What is the evidence for routine environmental sampling---A commentary.

BACKGROUND: Before 1970, US hospitals conducted scheduled culturing of the air and environmental surfaces. Currently, routine environmental culturing is not recommended. Targeted microbiologic sampling is only recommended for research purposes, outbreak investigations, and when there are validated culture methods and action level based on culture results. METHODS: The paper is a commentary. The literature was reviewed to find published guidelines that provide recommendations for appropriate microbiologic sampling of the hospital environment based on validated culture methods and provide actio

Family planning services for incarcerated women: models for filling an unmet need.

Purpose Incarcerated women around the globe are predominantly of reproductive age. Most of these women have been pregnant before, and many want to be sexually active and avoid pregnancy upon release. Yet few of these women are on a regular method of contraception. Providing contraceptive services for women in custody benefits individual and public health goals of reducing unintended pregnancy. This policy briefing reviews evidence for an unmet need for family planning in the correctional setting, and policy implications for expanding services. The paper aims to discuss these issues. Design/met

Challenges of managing patients with inherited metabolic disorders in a developing country.

The main problems encountered in managing patients with inherited metabolic disorders (IMDs) are inadequate numbers of clinicians and scientists with experience in IMDs, ill-equipped laboratory facilities, lack of funding, and lack of a well-organized plan. Other challenges that must be faced in developing countries include basic health care, birthing centers, and funding. The community environment including a clean water supply and appropriate waste disposal may also be problems. A stable communication system is necessary, as well as the means of paying for these systems. Analyses of local fo

Introducing onsite antenatal syphilis screening in Burkina Faso: implementation and evaluation of a feasibility intervention tailored to a local context.

BACKGROUND: Although the advantages of introducing point of care testing for syphilis in antenatal care (ANC) are well documented, there is little evidence on how to address structural issues within health systems. A better understanding of how these interventions work in a range of settings and contexts is needed in order to overcome bottlenecks at health system level. To better understand the relationships between implementation and context we developed and implemented an intervention focused on integrating a rapid screening test for syphilis in ANC services in rural primary health care faci

People with dyslexia and heart, chest, skin, digestive, musculoskeletal, vision, learning, speech and mental disorders were more dissatisfied with neighbourhoods: Scottish Household Survey, 2007-2008.

Rarely do we know the perception toward neighbourhoods in people specifically with health conditions. Therefore, the aim of the present study was to understand the perception toward neighbourhoods among adults with a series of the existing health conditions in a country-wide and population-based setting. Data were retrieved from and analysed in Scottish Household Survey, 2007-2008. Information on demographics, self-reported health conditions and perception toward neighbourhoods and the surrounding facilities was obtained by household interview.
