Carcinogenic and non-carcinogenic health risk assessment of organic compounds and heavy metals in electronic cigarettes.

E-cigarettes are now very popular in the world. Compared to traditional cigarettes, e-cigarettes are often considered safer and healthier. However, their safety remains controversial and requires further research and regulation. In this study, we aimed to understand the possible hazards to humans of four compounds (formaldehyde, acetaldehyde, acrolein, and acetone) and seven heavy metals (arsenic, cadmium, manganese, lead, copper, nickel, and chromium) contained in e-cigarette liquids and aerosols and perform a health risk assessment. We searched PubMed, CNKI, and other databases for relevant

Florida Doulas' Perspectives on Their Role in Reducing Maternal Morbidity and Health Disparities.

BACKGROUND: Maternal mortality rates continue to rise in the United States. Considerable racial disparities exist, as Black women face two to three times the risks of dying from pregnancy-related complications compared with white women. Doulas have been associated with improved maternal outcomes. This study aimed to 1) investigate Florida doulas' perspectives and influence on severe maternal morbidity/mortality and related inequities, as well as 2) identify opportunities for actionable change. The social ecological model, which acknowledges how individual, interpersonal, institutional, communi

Addressing cognitive impairment in hypertensive patients: Risk factors and clinical implications.

Cognitive impairment is a major public health challenge, particularly among aging populations with hypertension. The study by Zuo and Yang provides valuable insights into the predictive risk factors for cognitive decline in hypertensive patients, utilizing a model with strong discriminative ability (AUC ROC: 0.802 in training set, 0.756 in test set). This letter highlights seven key risk factors identified in the study: gender, age, education level, poverty income ratio (PIR), depression, vigorous physical activity, and creatinine levels. Men exhibited a higher risk of cognitive impairment tha

The interrelation of sleep and mental and physical health is anchored in grey-matter neuroanatomy and under genetic control.

Humans need about seven to nine hours of sleep per night. Sleep habits are heritable, associated with brain function and structure, and intrinsically related to well-being, mental, and physical health. However, the biological basis of the interplay of sleep and health is incompletely understood. Here we show, by combining neuroimaging and behavioral genetic approaches in two independent large-scale datasets (HCP (n = 1106), age range: 22-37, eNKI (n = 783), age range: 12-85), that sleep, mental, and physical health have a shared neurobiological basis in grey matter anatomy; and that these rela

Military Spouses' Physical Activity and Flourishing.

INTRODUCTION: Military spouses' health and well-being are pivotal to a healthy and strong United States military force; therefore, elucidating factors that contribute to spouses' health and well-being is important. Prior research has suggested that military spouses may engage in adequate physical activity for physical health; however, it is unknown how spouses' physical activity may benefit their lives in other ways, especially in light of the military context. Flourishing is a condition in which all parts of life are going well, indicating a more overall assessment of health and well-being. T

Practice and power: a review and interpretive synthesis focused on the exercise of discretionary power in policy implementation by front-line providers and managers.

Tackling the implementation gap is a health policy concern in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). Limited attention has so far been paid to the influence of power relations over this gap. This article presents, therefore, an interpretive synthesis of qualitative health policy articles addressing the question: how do actors at the front line of health policy implementation exercise discretionary power, with what consequences and why? The article also demonstrates the particular approach of thematic synthesis and contributes to discussion of how such work can inform future health policy re
