[Physical activity of schoolchildren in France. The paradox of a public health priority!].

BACKGROUND: For their health and an appropriate development, it is recommended that schoolchildren get on a daily basis a minimum of 60 min of moderate-to-vigorous physical activity (MVPA). With only about 11% of girls and 25% of boys completing these recommendations, French children are among the least active in the world. In addition, most of them spend almost 3h/day in front of a screen while it is generally suggested to limit children's screen time to less than 2h/day. METHODS: An inspection of available opportunities in the French context reveals many occasions for sufficient physical ac

Objective measures of physical capability and subsequent health: a systematic review.

BACKGROUND: measures of physical capability may be predictive of subsequent health, but existing published studies have not been systematically reviewed. We hypothesised that weaker grip strength, slower walking speed and chair rising and shorter standing balance time, in community-dwelling populations, would be associated with higher subsequent risk of fracture, cognitive outcomes, cardiovascular disease, hospitalisation and institutionalisation. METHODS: studies were identified through systematic searches of the electronic databases MEDLINE and EMBASE (to May 2009). Reference lists of eligi

Physical violence against women from the perspective of health professionals.

OBJECTIVE: To comprehend the perception of health professionals regarding physical violence against women by an intimate partner. METHODOLOGICAL PROCEDURES: This is a qualitative study performed in 2006 on 30 health professionals from three National Health System units in the city of Natal, Northeastern Brazil. Semi-structured interviews were conducted on three thematic topics: ideas associated to physical violence suffered by women; action of the health professional; and the role of health services. The series of interviews included questions on the perception of professionals about gender r

Health-related physical fitness of adolescents and young adults with myelomeningocele.

To assess components of health-related physical fitness in adolescents and young adults with myelomeningocele (MMC), and to study relations between aerobic capacity and other health-related physical fitness components. This cross-sectional study included 50 adolescents and young adults with MMC, aged 16-30 years (25 males). Aerobic capacity was quantified by measuring peak oxygen uptake (peakVO2) during a maximal exercise test on a cycle or arm ergometer depending on the main mode of ambulation. Muscle strength of upper and lower extremity muscles was assessed using a hand-held dynamometer. Re

Bridging the gap between mental and physical health: a multidisciplinary approach.

People with serious mental illnesses have higher rates of morbidity and premature mortality compared with the general population. This population loses from 13 to over 20 years of life compared with their nonpsychiatric cohorts. A multitude of factors contribute to this silent tragedy. A major problem is that multiple barriers exist, making it difficult for individuals with serious mental illness to access quality health care. Additionally, compared with the average American, people with serious mental illness are more likely to engage in unhealthy lifestyle practices, such as lack of regular

The impact of partner alcohol problems on women's physical and mental health.

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to examine the association between partner alcohol problems and selected physical and mental health outcomes among married or cohabiting women, before and after adjusting for potential confounders, and to compare these associations with those reflecting the impact of the women's own alcohol-use disorders (AUDs). METHOD: This analysis is based on data from the Wave 1 2001-2002 National Epidemiologic Survey on Alcohol and Related Conditions (NESARC), a cross-sectional, retrospective survey of a nationally representative sample of U.S. adults 18 years of

Stigmatization, physical illness and mental health in primary ciliary dyskinesia.

Primary ciliary dyskinesia (PCD) causes chronic cough, sinusitis and bronchiectasis, and half of patients also show situs inversus. The genetic basis and visible and concealed chronic symptoms provide potential for stigmatization. We describe a structural equation model linking a questionnaire measure of stigmatization to sex, age, personality (Big Five), symptoms (St George's Respiratory Questionnaire), health status (SF-36) and stress (GHQ-12). Stigma did not relate to physical symptoms or health, or to situs, but correlated with mental health and the social impact of symptoms. Neuroticism,

What are the costs of marital conflict and dissolution to children's physical health?

Do parental marital conflict and dissolution influence the risk trajectory of children's physical health risk? This paper reviews evidence addressing this question in the context of understanding how early environmental adversities may trigger a succession of risks that lead to poor health in childhood and greater risk for chronic health problems in adulthood. We first review existing evidence linking marital conflict and dissolution to offspring's physical health outcomes. Next, we provide evidence supporting biopsychosocial pathways that may link marital conflict and dissolution with acceler

Posttraumatic stress disorder, anger and hostility, and physical health status.

Accumulating evidence suggests that posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is linked to both objective and subjective indices of poorer health. Less is known about processes that may explain this association. This study examined anger/hostility as a possible mediator and moderator of PTSD and health status among a sample of 134 medical patients. Participants completed a structured interview of PTSD and questionnaires assessing health perceptions and anger and data on physician-diagnosed illnesses were gathered from computerized databases. Trait anger and anger-in partially explained the associat

Child physical abuse: health professionals' perceptions, diagnosis and responses.

The objectives of this cross-sectional survey were to assess primary health professionals' perceptions of and ability to recognize child physical abuse in their practice. A random sample was taken of 979 nurses, doctors, and dentists working in primary care in Northern Ireland. The response rate was 44%, and the results showed that 59% of respondents had seen a suspicious case of child physical abuse, of which 47% (n = 201) had reported it. Ability and willingness to recognize and report abuse varied across the three professions. The findings suggest a professional reluctance to engage in reco

Physical functioning and mental health in patients with chronic medical conditions.

There is evidence to suggest that a decline in physical functioning with advancing age is independent of mental health, which appears to remain relatively stable. There is additional evidence to suggest that those with a chronic disease also experience a decline in physical function while the mental health remains relatively stable. Using a cross-sectional design, data from the US population norms for the Medical Outcomes Study SF-36 are examined and compared to SF-36 data collected for four patient groups. Patient groups include kidney dialysis patients, multiple sclerosis patients, kidney tr

[Physical activity and sports as health promoting behavior in middle age].

In any preventive health care program for middle aged adults and elderly people, the promotion of physical fitness activities has become an item of priority. However, the increased awareness of the importance of being physically fit is in contrast with the limited number of adults actually involved in physical fitness activities. This study focuses on the reasons for in-activity as well as on the perceived motivation to participate in a fitness program. Health was found, as expected, to be the most important motive to start participation in a physical fitness program. Even most of the non-acti

Leisure time, physical activity and some indices of mental health.

In the introduction the concept of health is discussed. The author emphasizes that the concept of health is often used in a biased and uncritical manner in discussions on the value of physical activity in relation to health. The practice of physical activity should be seen in relation to a more holistic concept of health, defined as a human being's total ability to function. Results are then presented from a number of investigations, of which the majority indicate a positive relation between physical activity and a reduction in the following indices of mental health: anxiety, depression, nervo

Exercise as medicine: Improving cardiovascular health through physical activity.

Cardiovascular diseases remain the leading cause of global mortality, and growing evidence shows that regular exercise is one of the most effective non-pharmacological strategies to prevent and modify their progression. Exercise exerts its benefits on the cardiovascular system in multiple ways. It improves lipid metabolism by lowering LDL-cholesterol, reducing triglycerides, and increasing HDL-cholesterol, which provides a protective function by slowing atherosclerotic plaque development. Exercise also reduces chronic inflammation by lowering circulating inflammatory markers and shifting immun

Associations of Serum Folate and Mental and Physical Health in Informal Caregivers.

BACKGROUND: Emotional and physical demands of caregiving can affect nutritional intake, particularly of vitamin B9 (folate), which is important in the functioning of the nervous and skeletal systems. Non-caregivers studies in Puerto Rico, a folate-fortified region since 1998, have reported low consumption of folic acid (folate added to foods or taken as a diet supplement) consumption among women, which can potentially affect individuals' subjective mental/physical health well-being. Serum folate levels are a widely used, low-cost, modifiable marker of recent folate status, yet a relationship b

Integrating physical activity into the workplace: opportunities for enhancing employee health.

INTRODUCTION: Human health is closely linked to physical, social, and ecological environments. Since people spend a large portion of their time at work, this setting plays a key role in well-being. Desk workers often remain sedentary for 8-10 h daily, increasing the risk of musculoskeletal disorders and pain. The UP150 office concept aims to promote movement during working hours, supporting the mind-body connection, improving relationships, and enhancing both health and work quality. This study builds on previous research by evaluating the effects of the UP150 concept after 2 years of implemen

Interrelationships of Social Determinants with Cognition, Vascular Health, and Physical Functioning.

OBJECTIVES: The primary aim of the current analysis was to evaluate the cumulative effect of different social determinants of health (SDoH) factors on vascular burden, cognition, and physical functioning. METHODS: We conducted a secondary data analysis of the Midlife in the United States (MIDUS 2) cross-sectional study using data from participants aged 55 and older. Measures derived from the Framingham Stroke Risk Profile, Brief Test of Adult Cognition by Telephone, and physical functioning scores from the Medical Outcomes Study - Short Form 36 items (MOS-SF36) were used to represent vascular

The Association Between Screening for Colorectal Cancer and Mental and Physical Health.

BACKGROUND: Colorectal cancer screening reduces colorectal cancer morbidity and mortality. Identifying the factors associated with screening participation is needed to overcome barriers to screening. While several of those factors have been identified, the impact of mental and physical health on screening behaviour is not well understood. METHODS: This retrospective cohort study compared the self-reported mental and physical health of those who did screen for colorectal cancer and those who did not. Participants of the Australasian Colorectal Cancer Family Registry Cohort that were aged 45-75

The impact of raising a child with a developmental or physical health condition in Ethiopia.

OBJECTIVE: Raising a child with a developmental disability or physical health condition can have a major impact on the lives of their families, especially in low-income countries. We explored the impact on such families in Ethiopia. STUDY DESIGN: A total of 241 child-caregiver dyads were recruited from two public hospitals in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. Of these, 139 children were diagnosed with a developmental disability (e.g. autism, intellectual disability) and 102 children with a physical health condition (e.g. malnutrition, severe HIV infection). The family quality of life was assessed using
