Variation in Health Care Resources in Rural and Urban Counties Associated with Differences in COVID-19 Mortality.

Few studies have examined whether the variation of health care infrastructure and workforce had potential impacts on COVID-19 mortality in rural counties. Linking national datasets, we stratified 1,548 rural and 1,148 urban U.S. counties using 2021 COVID-19 median mortality rates (19.5 vs. 14.0 per 10,000 population, respectively) as a cut-point for high and low mortality to compare sociodemographics, vaccination status, access to health centers and hospitals, and health care workforce supply between and within rural and urban counties. High-mortality (compared with low-mortality) rural counti

Current global crises and youth mental health in Germany: the role of media use, coping and resources.

Young people are currently facing multiple global crises. This study provides an overview of recent data from a population-based German study to examine youth mental health in this multi-crisis context and explores coping strategies and social media use. Data were drawn from eight survey waves (T1/2020-T8/2025) of the nationwide COPSY study, including n = 3,312 families and n = 2,291 adolescent self-reports. The design combined longitudinal and repeated cross-sectional measurement. Validated instruments assessed health-related quality of life (HRQoL), symptoms of mental disorders, crisis-relat

Navigating perinatal mental health care: migrant women's experiences of support pathways and the role of digital resources.

BACKGROUND: Migrant women experience disproportionately high rates of perinatal mental health difficulties, shaped by intersecting cultural, social, and systemic barriers. Despite the increasing role of digital technologies in healthcare delivery, their potential to support equitable perinatal mental health care remains underexplored and often fails to reflect the complex realities of migrant women's lives. This study examined how women from migrant backgrounds in Australia navigate perinatal mental health care across clinical, community, and digital settings, with a particular focus on how di

What plays beneath: mental health burden, personal resources, and treatment utilization among professional musicians and music students.

INTRODUCTION: Professional musicians may be exposed to distinctive occupational, psychosocial, and artistic demands, yet integrated evidence on their mental health, psychological resources, and treatment utilization remains scarce. Therefore, this study examined mental health indicators, including symptom burden and self-reported diagnosed mental disorders, personal psychological resources (resilience, self-efficacy, and self-esteem), occupational characteristics, and treatment use in a nationwide sample of professional musicians and music students in Germany. METHODS: Data were collected thr

Assessment of water quality and microbial contamination in institutional water resources: a necessity to understand health risks.

Lack of regular monitoring of water sources may lead to undetected contamination, posing serious health risks and necessitating regular water quality assessments. Sampling for physicochemical, microbial analyses, and online surveys across three higher education institutions was done to evaluate water quality. Spatiotemporal variations among physicochemical parameters showed that the pH, EC, and TDS decreased during the wet season, reflecting the dilution effect of rain. However, DO increased from 0.67 to 4.83 ppm, indicating better aeration. PCA showed seasonal variability, whereas the correla

Internet Health Resources for Diabetic Foot Search: The Content, Quality, and Readability of Information on Web Sites.

BACKGROUND: As the incidence of diabetes mellitus increases, the incidence of diabetic foot also increases. This situation, which may lead to devastating complications and progress to limb loss for patients, exposes patients and their social environments to a big crisis. Thus, patients may seek secondary opinions from online sources about information they initially obtained from health institutions. We aimed to evaluate the information content related to diabetic foot on the Internet that is probably used by patients for Internet searching. METHODS: After software optimization and reset, rela

Addressing budget reduction and reallocation on health-related resources during COVID-19 pandemic in malaria-endemic countries.

The global COVID-19 pandemic has been affecting the maintenance of various disease control programmes, including malaria. In some malaria-endemic countries, funding and personnel reallocations were executed from malaria control programmes to support COVID-19 response efforts, resulting mainly in interruptions of disease control activities and reduced capabilities of health system. While it is principal to drive national budget rearrangements during the pandemic, the long-standing malaria control programmes should not be left behind in order to sustain the achievements from the previous years.

Dimensions of Poverty and Health Outcomes Among People Living with HIV Infection: Limited Resources and Competing Needs.

HIV infection is concentrated in populations living in poverty. We examined the overlapping and independent effects of multiple poverty indicators on HIV-related health status. Because substance use can create competing survival needs when resources are limited, we also sought to objectively measure expenditures on food relative to alcohol and tobacco products. To achieve these aims, 459 men and 212 women living with HIV infection in Atlanta, GA completed measures of socio-demographic and heath characteristics as well as multiple indicators of poverty including housing stability, transportatio

A study of symptom distress, health locus of control, and coping resources of aging post-polio survivors.

Nearly one-half of the estimated 1.63 million American patients who survived the polio epidemics of the 1940s and 1950s are re-experiencing symptoms of the acute illness. This exploratory study of 125 aging post-polio survivors examined the differences of symptom distress, health locus of control, and coping resources for survivors who had and those who had not incurred a chronic physical disability following the acute phase of poliomyelitis. The Symptom Rating Test, the Multidimensional Health Locus of Control Scale, and the Coping Resources Inventory were used. No significant differences wer

Standardizing Disaster Health Data Visualization Using Fast Healthcare Interoperability Resources in Indonesia: Dashboard Development and Technical Evaluation.

BACKGROUND: Health data management during disasters enables responders to assess the needs of survivors, efficiently allocate resources, and monitor survivors' health conditions. However, government agencies need to interpret health data in real time during disasters because the volume and complexity of such data can hinder timely decision-making. OBJECTIVE: In this study, we aimed to develop a visual interface for Fast Healthcare Interoperability Resources (FHIR)-based data from various sources, using the daily report form of the World Health Organization (WHO) Emergency Medical Teams Minimu

Metropolitan inequalities in health system resources and COVID-19 adjusted life expectancy among older adults in Mexico.

INTRODUCTION: The mortality and morbidity consequences of the COVID-19 outbreak were concentrated among older adults. The health system response was critical to mitigating its negative effects, particularly through the redistribution of healthcare resources across territories. The objective of this study was to analyze inequities in the distribution of health resources in Mexico in relation to life expectancy (LE) and COVID-19 adjusted life expectancy (CALE) in the 60-64 age group at metropolitan level. METHODS: We conducted an ecological study covering the period from 2020 to 2023. LE was es

Resources Available for Pulmonary Hypertension Care Across Veterans Health Administration Medical Centers: Results From a Multicenter Survey.

BACKGROUND: Pulmonary hypertension (PH) care requires extensive resources and support, including expert multidisciplinary teams, advanced diagnostic modalities, and complex pharmacologic therapies. While this infrastructure is standardized within accredited PH centers, less is known about resource availability outside of PH centers, where most patients with PH receive care. OBJECTIVE: To explore PH-specific resource availability across the Veterans Health Administration (VA), which cares for over 250,000 patients with PH. Retrospectively appraised life changes since the German reunification and health: gender-differentiated indirect associations via psychosocial resources.

BACKGROUND: The German reunification (1989/1990) was a period of rapid socio-structural transformation, with heterogeneous consequences for work, finances, and personal life in East Germany. Drawing on Conservation of Resources (COR) theory, this study examined whether retrospectively appraised changes since the reunification are associated with later-life health and whether psychosocial resources show gender-specific indirect associations. METHODS: Data came from a 2022 cross-sectional survey of 1,295 adults who lived in East Germany before and after reunification and were aged 16-64 in 1990

Assessing the effect of health system resources on HIV and tuberculosis programmes in Malawi: a modelling study.

BACKGROUND: Malawi is progressing towards UNAIDS and WHO End TB Strategy targets to eliminate HIV/AIDS and tuberculosis. We aimed to assess the prospective effect of achieving these goals on the health and health system of the country and the influence of consumable constraints. METHODS: In this modelling study, we used the Thanzi la Onse (Health for All) model, which is an individual-based multi-disease simulation model that simulates HIV and tuberculosis transmission, alongside other diseases (eg, malaria, non-communicable diseases, and maternal diseases), and gates access to essential medi

"Locked down outside": Perception of hazard and health resources in COVID-19 epidemic context among homeless people.

While social inequality is widely recognised as being a risk factor for COVID-19 infection or serious forms of the disease, many questions still remain concerning the perception of hazard and protective measures by the most vulnerable populations. This mixed-methods study aimed (1) to describe the self-perceived health and protective measures linked to COVID-19 of homeless people in one of the largest and poorest cities in France, and (2) to assess which skills and resources they used to address the COVID-19 pandemic. The quantitative survey addressed these questions among a sample of 995 home

Comparison of mental health resources used by patients with bipolar disorder treated with risperidone, olanzapine, or quetiapine.

OBJECTIVE: The atypical antipsychotics, risperidone, olanzapine, and quetiapine, have been approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration for treatment of mania associated with bipolar disorder. Information on the relative mental health resource use of these therapies is helpful to pharmacy managers since differences in efficacy and safety may translate into differences in mental health care utilization. We compared charges for other mental health services associated with risperidone, olanzapine, and quetiapine treatment of patients with bipolar disorder to assess whether there were signifi
