Health status, trends, and issues in Sri Lanka.

It is widely recognized that better health is a prerequisite for the overall economic and social development of a nation. This paper provides a comprehensive review of current health service administration, health status, trends and issues, and health financing and resource allocation in Sri Lanka. The review revealed that Sri Lanka has achieved a relatively

ACOG Committee Statement No. 12: Health Care for Women and Gender-Diverse Active-Duty and Reserve Uniformed Service Members and Veterans.

An increasing percentage of the active-duty and reserve uniformed services force are women, and they are the fastest growing population in the Veterans Health Administration (VHA). Additionally, the VHA is one of the largest providers of gender-affirming care in the United States. Asking about a patient's military service and being aware of the unique health and reproductive health care needs of this population are critically important. Members of these populations may be at increased risk for a variety of health-related issues, including intimate partner violence, a history of military sexual

The role of case containment centers in the eradication of dracunculiasis in Togo and Ghana.

As part of the global effort to eradicate dracunculiasis (Guinea worm disease), several endemic countries established case containment centers to provide treatment and support to patients with emerging Guinea worms to keep them from contaminating water sources. To assess the functioning, effectiveness, and public perception of this intervention, we visited eight centers and conducted surveys in 32 villages in Togo and Ghana. In the areas served by these centers, incidence dropped by 71% in Togo and 42% in Ghana from 2003 to 2004. Among persons with emerging worms, admission to the centers was

The structural quality of Tanzanian primary health facilities.

Structural quality is a key element in the quality of care provided at the primary level, which aims to offer health care interventions of proven efficacy. This assessment of the structural quality of Tanzanian primary health services indicated serious weaknesses in the available physical infrastructure, as well as supervision and other support, both for government and nongovernmental services and for dispensary and first referral-level services. Addressing these weaknesses is likely to require some additional funding and review of the functions of different groups of health care facilities wi

A Comparison of Participants in Two Community-Based Programs: Assisted Outpatient Treatment and a Mental Health Court.

OBJECTIVE: Mental health courts and assisted outpatient treatment (AOT) are tools to help people with serious mental illness engage in treatment and avoid or reduce institutionalization. As both programs become increasingly prevalent, questions remain about whether people with severe mental illness who receive AOT have the same characteristics, histories, and service needs as those who participate in mental health courts. If there are differences, each program may require assessments and interventions tailored to the specific characteristics and needs of participants. METHODS: This study exam

Managing mental health: why we need to redress the balance between healthcare spending and social spending.

BACKGROUND: Mental health outcomes vary widely among high-income countries, although mental health problems represent an increasing proportion of the burden of disease for all countries. This has led to increased demand for healthcare services, but mental health outcomes may also be particularly sensitive to the availability of social services. This paper examines the variation in the absolute and relative amounts that high-income countries spend on healthcare and social services to determine whether increased expenditure on social services relative to healthcare expenditure might be associate
