"Not always smooth sailing": mental health issues associated with the transition from high school to college.

Students who transition from high school to college are often excited by the new phase of their lives. However, they are exposed to circumstances and expectations which place them at risk for psychiatric disorders or that may exacerbate pre-existing problems. In this paper, we discuss risk factors and other issues associated with students transitioning to college or university life, identify challenges for health professionals, and suggest possible strategies to improve the mental health of young adults on college campuses. Academic staff and health care providers need to be aware of how best

Co-occurrence, stability and manifestation of child and adolescent mental health problems: a latent transition analysis.

BACKGROUND: Complex constellations of socio-emotional and behavioural problems (i.e., mental health problems) in childhood and adolescence are common and heighten the risk for subsequent personality, anxiety and mood disorders in adulthood. Aims of this study included the examination of patterns of mental health problems (e.g., externalizing-internalizing co-occurrence) and their transitions to reported mental disorders by using a longitudinal person-centered approach (latent class and latent transition analysis). METHODS: The sample consisted of 1255 children and adolescents (51.7% female, m

Interpretation of reproductive hormones before, during and after the pubertal transition-Identifying health and disordered puberty.

Puberty is a process of transition from childhood to adult reproductive capacity, governed by the reactivation of the hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal axis after a long period of dormancy in mid-childhood. As such, the reproductive hormones are in a state of flux during the adolescent years, and interpretation of both the onset of healthy, concordant puberty and the differentiation of precocious, delayed or disordered puberty, can be challenging. This review is focused on the description of the endocrine axes in healthy puberty and the markers of disorders of puberty that can aid diagnosis and m

Relationships between rumination time, metabolic conditions, and health status in dairy cows during the transition period.

The main objective of this experiment was to monitor the rumination pattern during the transition period in primiparous (PR) and pluriparous (PL) dairy cows and to investigate its relationships with metabolic conditions, milk yield, and health status. The study was carried out in an experimental free-stall barn and involved 32 Italian Friesian cows (9 PR and 23 PL) during the transition phase. The rumination time (RT) was recorded with an automatic system (HR-Tag), and data were calculated and summarized in 2-h intervals. Blood samples were collected during the transition phase to assess bioch

Health and psychosocial status of patients with turner syndrome after transition to adulthood: the Belgian experience.

BACKGROUND: Most girls with Turner syndrome (TS) are intensively followed by paediatricians, but are lost to follow-up when they reach adulthood. To gain insight into the adult medical and psychosocial situation, we performed a survey in young adult TS patients. PATIENTS AND METHODS: A questionnaire concerning current health status, education, occupation and living situation was sent to 160 young adult TS women, all treated during childhood with GH and oestrogen if needed. RESULTS: We received 102 completed questionnaires. Mean +/- SD age at reception of the questionnaire was 23.4 +/- 3.3 ye

[Mental health-An underestimated problem? : Psychological burden in transitional care: recommendations for rheumatological practice].

BACKGROUND: The transition of patients from pediatric to adult rheumatology represents a psychosocial process that extends beyond a mere transfer of care. Adolescents and young adults are in a particularly vulnerable developmental phase characterized by substantial disease-related and developmental challenges. Mental health has a major impact on disease outcomes, treatment adherence, self-management, and the overall success of transition. At the same time, this life stage is associated with an increased risk of psychological distress and mental disorders. OBJECTIVE: This article aims to highl

Transitioning Towards Sustainable Diets: Pulses, Their Role in Modulating Gut Microbiota and Metabolic Health.

Background: The global shift to sustainable diets has raised interest in plant-based protein sources, particularly pulses, due to their nutritional value, health benefits, and low environmental impact. Pulses are rich in protein, dietary fiber, and a variety of bioactive compounds that may influence gut microbiota and metabolic health. Objective: This narrative review aims to evaluate the role of pulse consumption in modulating gut microbiota, improving metabolic health, and contributing to the prevention of non-communicable diseases (NCDs), while considering the impact of processing technique

Transitioning toward a better future in behavioral health: From institutional betrayal to racial healing.

Racial trauma, betrayal trauma, and institutional betrayal are baked into the history of the United States. This legacy of injustice encompasses direct experiences of racism and discrimination, as well as a broader sense of betrayal in which the very institutions tasked with helping people, such as the U.S. health care system, let them down in egregious, painful, or even fatal ways. Using the theories of racial trauma (i.e., an extreme stress response to cumulative firsthand and vicarious experiences of racism and discrimination), betrayal trauma (i.e., a violation of trust by a person on whom

Mental Health, Declining Physical Activity and Social Connection during Transitions into Fatherhood in the UK.

This paper addresses an under-explored area of sociologically oriented health research, namely, the mental health and physical activity (PA) experiences of new fathers. Drawing upon responses to an online qualitative survey from 32 fathers, aged 18 or over, and living in the UK, we show how the decline in these fathers' overall PA was associated with poor mental health and the changing constraints that characterised their increasingly complex networks of interdependence. These constraints corresponded with shifts in fathers' PA engagement from team sports towards individualised, flexible, and

Characterization of multilevel influences of mental health care transitions: a comparative case study analysis.

PURPOSE: Mental health care transitions are increasingly prioritized given their potential to optimize care delivery and patient outcomes, especially those focused on the transition from inpatient to outpatient mental health care. However, limited efforts to date characterize such mental health transition practices, especially those spanning multiple service setting contexts. Examination of key influences of inpatient to outpatient mental health care transitions across care contexts is needed to inform ongoing and future efforts to improve mental health care transitions. The current work aims

Transitional Care Experiences of Patients with Hip Fracture Across Different Health Care Settings.

BACKGROUND: Transitions of care often result in fragmented care, leading to unmet patient needs and poor satisfaction with care, especially in patients with multiple chronic conditions. This project aimed to understand how experiences of patients with hip fracture, caregivers, and healthcare providers differ across different points of transition. METHODS: A secondary analysis of 103 qualitative, semi-structured interviews was conducted using emergent coding techniques, to gain an understanding of how transitional care experiences may differ across varying settings of care. Following the secon
