The identification of congenital hearing loss using Transient Evoked Otoacoustic Emissions and Automatic Auditory Brainstem Response in a newborn hearing screening program is crucial for initiating early rehabilitation with hearing aids or cochlear implants. Specific genetic causes, such as Pendred syndrome, connexin-26, stereocilin, and otoferlin-associated deafness, can be identified today using gene panels. Specifically, for otoferlin-associated deafness, it may be possible to offer gene therapy as a novel treatment for this specific genetic type of hearing loss.

Epidemiological studies reveal a correlation between hearing loss and the development and progression of Alzheimer’s disease (AD), but the underlying causal mechanisms remain unclear. A study now provides experimental evidence that hearing loss can promote AD via the growth differentiation factor 1 (GDF1) pathway, which may aid in developing potential AD therapeutic strategies.

OBJECTIVES: Neurosensory hearing loss is well-documented in chronic autoimmune conditions such as systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). However, the literature lacks data on the prevalence and characteristics of hearing impairment in Takayasu's arteritis (TAK). In this cross-sectional study, our principal objective was to systematically assess the auditory function of individuals diagnosed with TAK, against SLE patients and healthy controls (HC).
METHODS: Age and gender matched TAK and SLE patients followed up in a tertiary centre along with healthy controls were included in a two-phase study.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: The purpose of this review is to offer a concise summary of current knowledge regarding hidden hearing loss (HHL) and to describe the variety of mechanisms that contribute to its development. We will also discuss the various diagnostic tools that are available as well as future directions.
RECENT FINDINGS: Hidden hearing loss often also called cochlear synaptopathy affects afferent synapses of the inner hair cells. This description is in contrast to traditional models of hearing loss, which predominantly affects auditory hair cells. In HHL, the synapses of nerve fibres with

Expert assessment of traumatic damage in the head and neck area by the adjuster broadly comprises two main questions: does a causal relationship between the complaint and the specific insured event exist, and what is the extent of the damage? A relationship is probable if the trauma is quantitively and qualitatively suitable to have caused the existent damage. A particularly difficult scenario is represented by cases lacking pre-accident findings or when the claimant claims that pre-existing hearing loss or tinnitus has been worsened by the event or that the accident was the cause of the impai

Sensorineural hearing loss (SNHL) affects approximately 466 million people worldwide, which is projected to reach 900 million by 2050. Its histological characteristics are lesions in cochlear hair cells, supporting cells, and auditory nerve endings. Neurological disorders cover a wide range of diseases affecting the nervous system, including Alzheimer's disease (AD), Parkinson's disease (PD), Huntington's disease (HD), autism spectrum disorder (ASD), etc. Many studies have revealed that neurological disorders manifest with hearing loss, in addition to typical nervous symptoms. The prevalence,

Congenital cytomegalovirus (cCMV) is the most common cause of nongenetic, sensorineural hearing loss and neurodevelopmental disorders in newborns, infants, and children. Current cCMV screening procedures for pregnant women and newborns are not standardized, which may be attributed to the lack of knowledge about the consequences of infection among clinicians and the general public and the lack of effective treatments. The purpose of this article is to provide a review and update on cCMV infection epidemiology, diagnostic tests, clinical manifestations, prevention, treatment, and nursing implica

AIM: Several studies have described sensorineural deafness in ankylosing spondylitis (AS) patients while conductive hearing loss has been reported to be rare. In our study we have studied the prevalence of hearing loss (HL) among AS patients and its association with non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) intake.
METHODS: We studied 100 AS patients and 40 controls. HL was defined as pure-tone thresholds greater than 20 dB (decibel) in at least two frequencies of the audiogram. Severity of HL was defined as given by World Health Organization. Clinical details and cumulative NSAID doses we

Temporal bone high-resolution computed tomography (HRCT) and magnetic resonance (MR) imaging are valuable tools in the evaluation of pediatric hearing loss. Computed tomography is important in the evaluation of pediatric conductive hearing loss and is the imaging modality of choice for evaluation of osseous abnormalities. MR imaging is the modality of choice for evaluation of sensorineural hearing loss. A broad spectrum of imaging findings can be seen with hearing loss in children. HRCT and MR imaging provide complementary information and are often used in conjunction in the preoperative evalu

Noise-induced hearing loss (NIHL) is second only to presbycusis, age-related hearing loss, as a cause of hearing impairment; yet, it is preventable. This commentary summarizes the effects of noise on hearing, relevant workplace regulations, and ways to minimize excessive noise's deleterious impact on individuals' quality of life on and off the job.

This paper presents a review of experimental and clinical research on the contribution of hypertension to cochlear hearing loss. Hypertension is one of the crucial risk factors underlying pathophysiological processes taking place in the cochlea. Several mechanisms explaining these processes have been described, mainly in animal models, such as the disturbance of the inner ear potassium recycling process due to the detrimental action of natriuretic hormone, and the decrease in the cochlear oxygen partial pressure. Current evidence linking hypertension to sensorineural high-frequency cochlear he

Recent studies suggest that subjects with hearing loss are more likely to develop Alzheimer's disease. Hearing loss can be consecutive to presbycusis and/or to central auditory dysfunction. Standard audiometric measures (pure tone and speech intelligibility) allow the diagnosis of presbycusis. However, to demonstrate central auditory dysfunction, specific audiometric tests are needed such as noisy and/or dichotic tests. Actually, no consensus exists to investigate hearing loss in people with Alzheimer's disease though hearing loss may be an early manifestation of Alzheimer's disease. Until now

Hearing loss is a common disability in the United States, most frequent among men, elderly individuals, and veterans but is increasingly affecting other younger adults. Types of hearing loss include sensorineural, conductive, and mixed. Hearing loss in children often is related to infections, time spent in a neonatal intensive care unit, and genetic etiologies. Presbycusis (ie, age-related hearing loss) is the most common etiology in adults. Adverse effects of untreated hearing loss include isolation, depression, lower income, and higher unemployment. Hearing aid use reduces levels of disabili

Hearing loss is the most common congenital sensory impairment. According to National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey data from 2001 to 2008, 20.3% of subjects aged greater than or equal to 12 had unilateral or bilateral hearing loss. The World Health Organization notes that, worldwide, there are 360 million people with disabling hearing loss, with 50% preventable. Although many hearing losses are acquired, many others are manifestations of preexisting conditions. The purpose of a pediatric hearing evaluation is to identify the degree and type of hearing loss and etiology and to outline

Noise-induced hearing loss (NIHL) from prolonged occupational exposure to noise continues was described. Since a therapy against NIHL is not currently available, it is important to take actions to minimize the exposure to noise. It is also important to perform auditory controls. In October 1992, the Ministry of Labour issued "Guidelines for Preventing Noise Induced Disorders" in Japan. The guidelines oblige employers who hire over fifty workers to take actions to prevent NIHL at the workplace that have the equivalent noise level of 85 dB (A) or higher. In fact there are lots of noise-induced d
