Angiosarcoma, the most common primary malignant neoplasm of the heart in adults, usually presents as pericardial effusion or right-sided heart failure. Rupture of an angiosarcoma-infiltrated cardiac chamber as a cause of hemothorax is very rare in the literature. In this report, we describe a 34-year-old male patient, who presented to emergency service with sudden chest pain and dyspnea. The diagnostic work-up revealed spontaneous right-sided hemothorax and a large right atrial (RA) mass with suspicious atrial perforation. An urgent surgery showed a vascularized irregular RA mass invading the

OBJECTIVE: To examine U.S. trends and underlying-cause patterns among deaths with diabetes recorded as a non-underlying cause (DM-nonUCD).
METHODS: We used CDC WONDER Multiple Cause of Death data from 1999 to 2024. DM-nonUCD was defined as deaths with ICD-10 codes E10-E14 in multiple-cause fields, excluding deaths with diabetes as the underlying cause. Analyses were performed overall and for type 1 diabetes (E10) and type 2 diabetes (E11). Death counts, age-adjusted mortality rates (AAMRs), and Joinpoint trends were assessed.
RESULTS: DM-nonUCD occurred in 4,794,136 deaths and increased from

Very little is known about the long-term health risks associated with the high stress police officer occupation. We report here on a retrospective cohort of 2,376 ever-employed white male police officers employed between January 1950 and October 1979. Vital status was obtained for 96%, the officers accumulating a total of 39,462 person-years. Six-hundred sixty-one deaths were observed. Total mortality from all causes was comparable to that of the overall U.S. white male population (standardized mortality ratio [SMR] = 106). Significantly increased mortality was seen for all malignant neoplasms

Differential diagnoses of cardiac masses include primary benign and malignant neoplasms, secondary neoplasms, and non-neoplastic masses, such as thrombi. Owing to different therapeutic approaches and the way these affect the prognosis, the early and correct diagnostic determination of the etiology of a cardiac mass is of utmost importance and essential for the appropriate management of patients. We report a case of a 52-year-old woman with a left ventricular mass in the setting of a recent Mycoplasma pneumoniae infection and a medical history of cutaneous T-cell lymphoma and hypereosinophilia.

OBJECTIVE: We aim to identify patterns of disease clusters among inpatients of a general hospital and to describe the characteristics and evolution of each group.
METHODS: We used two data sets from the CMBD (Conjunto mínimo básico de datos - Minimum Basic Hospital Data Set (MBDS)) of the Lucus Augusti Hospital (Spain), hospitalisations and patients, realising a retrospective cohort study among the 74 220 patients discharged from the Medic Area between 01 January 2000 and 31 December 2015. We created multimorbidity clusters using multiple correspondence analysis.
RESULTS: We identified five

Schwannomas are rare peripheral nerve sheath tumours involving the head, neck and extremities. Heart, lung, orbit and kidney are some of the rare sites for schwannoma involvement. Here, we present a 55-year-old patient with no specific complaints, who was detected to have a complex solid cystic mass in the lower pole of the left kidney. In contrast-enhanced computed tomography, the lesion was highly suggestive of malignancy. The patient underwent a laparoscopic radical nephrectomy. Grossly, the tumour was well-circumscribed and delineated from surrounding renal parenchyma. Microscopic examinat

Cardiac fibromas are rare primary cardiac tumors. Although they constitute a small portion of cardiac neoplasms, they are the most common primary cardiac neoplasm group in childhood after rhabdomyomas. Cardiac fibromas, composed of connective tissue and fibroblasts, are benign. They may be asymptomatic, cause symptoms such as intracavitary obstruction, coronary artery compression, thromboembolic events, and conduction defects, or result in sudden death. Approximately 180 to 200 cases of cardiac fibromas have been reported in the literature, and most are located in the ventricles. Since fibroma

Papillary fibroelastomas are a rare cardiac neoplasm typically found on the left side of the heart, and most commonly on the aortic valve, which can present with cardiac or neurologic symptoms. A 51-year-old woman with no cardiac history presented to a resident clinic with complaints of left-sided facial paresthesias and palpitations for 1 month. Echocardiographic imaging showed a mass on the aortic annulus, concerning for a cardiac tumor. Due to the risk of possible embolization, if the tumor was a myxoma, the patient required intrathoracic surgery. During the intrathoracic procedure the mass

Primary neoplasms of the heart are rare. Benign entities in adult populations include myxoma, fibroma, lipoma, hamartoma of mature myocytes, and vascular hamartoma. The most common pediatric cardiac neoplasm is the rhabdomyoma. We report a 22-year-old female with a primary left ventricle tumor composed of multiple mature mesenchymal tissues, including mature cardiac myocytes, smooth muscle, fibroblasts, fat, blood vessels including a hemangioma like area, and nerve fibers. The various elements were disorganized, but well differentiated, and showed little mitotic activity, which are features su

The biopsy lies at the heart of the management of the suspected melanocytic neoplasm. Dermatologists are the ideal physicians to examine patients with suspect melanocytic lesions and an understanding of when and how to perform a biopsy is vital. Various algorithms have been formulated to allow for facilitation of the clinical examination, including the ABCDE rule, the Glasgow 7-point checklist, and the "ugly duckling" sign. Along with this, dermoscopy can increase the sensitivity of diagnosis. Proper training regarding dermatoscopy is essential, especially with algorithms such as the Menzies m

The case of a young 32 year old male with a primary cardiac angiosarcoma is reported. The neoplasm manifested itself by a quickly increasing cardiac tamponade but without metastases. The nonradical resection of the tumor was made because of local invasion with tumor tissue. The patient was followed-up for 3 years after the surgery and no recurrence of the malignant process was observed. Cardiac angiosarcoma is a very rare malignant tumor of soft tissues. In spite of significant progress in clinical treatment, for a patient diagnosed antemortem with cardiac angiosarcoma, the long-term expectati

We report a rare case of symptomatic cardiac metastasis from a transitional cell carcinoma of the renal pelvis diagnosed by echocardiography. A 75-year-old patient with a long history of neoplasm since 1999 and coronary artery disease with CABG in 2003, was admitted to our department. He underwent cardiac surgery using cardiopulmonary bypass with tumor excision. Histologically it was the same type of transitional cell neoplasm which was operated seven years before. We present all medical history, detailed 2D and 3D echocardiography, intraoperative pictures and discuss possible chain of changes

Myxomas are the most common primary cardiac neoplasms. They are generally benign and most commonly arise from the left atrium. The clinical course of the left atrial myxoma is characterized by symptoms resulting from obstructive, embolic, or "constitutional" effects of the tumor (Goodwin, Lancet. 1963;1:464; Selzer et al, Am J Med. 1972;52:9; Nasser et al, Am Heart J. 1972;83:694). Obstructive symptoms are most common. Generally symptoms of the obstructive presentation are represented by dyspnea, pulmonary edema, or syncope. Embolic ischemic symptom manifestations are typically cerebral, altho

Neuroendocrine tumors (NETs) are rare neoplasms originating from the neuroendocrine system. While they can develop sporadically throughout the body, they are mostly found in the gastrointestinal tract, respiratory tract, pancreas, and thymus. NETs can be classified into low-grade indolent tumors, intermediate-grade tumors, or high-grade aggressive cancers. These tumors have the potential to metastasize to various parts of the body, with the liver being the primary site for metastases. However, it is extremely rare for NETs to metastasize to the heart. Here, we present a unique case of intracar

Solitary fibrous tumor (SFT) are rare pleura neoplasms often localized to middle or inferior hemithorax. A middle-aged woman presents to the emergency department following a motor vehicle accident, the computed tomography scan revealed a giant tumor occupying the entire left pleural cavity with a complete collapse of the left lung and substantial right deviation of heart and mediastinum. Using preoperative arterial coiling followed by a double-level thoracotomy we successfully resected the giant tumor. The SFT weighed ~10 lbs. Lipomatous hypertrophy of the interatrial septum (LHIS) is a rare benign heart disease characterized by excessive deposition of adipose tissue in the atrial septum with sparing fossa ovalis, which demonstrates a characteristic hourglass/dumbbell configuration. We reported a case of LHIS with inhomogenous characteristic on CMR and persistently no FDG uptake on 18F-FDG PET-CT, which is contrary to a few previous cases. This single case report suggests that in case LHIS present in-homogenous characteristic on CMR, metabolic PET imaging could be used as a complementary imaging model to decrease th

Neuroendocrine tumors (NETs), also known as carcinoid tumors, are a heterogeneous group of neoplasms that arise from cells throughout the neuroendocrine system, most commonly arising from the gastrointestinal (GI) tract, lungs, and bronchi. Myocardial carcinoid metastasis is rare with an incidence among metastatic carcinoid patients of 4%. They are generally asymptomatic and detected incidentally. Infiltrative myocardial metastasis secondary to carcinoid tumor is exceedingly rare with only single-digit cases reported in the literature. We report the case of a 65-years-old female with a newly d

Metastasis to the heart from malignancy is a frequent but underestimated event. Tumors that are located in the mediastinum, such as pleural mesothelioma, are more frequently associated with cardiac colonization. Few reports have described metastasis from colon adenocarcinoma, which usually colonizes liver and lungs. Moreover, intracardiac localization is more common for primary cardiac neoplasms than for metastasis. We present an unusual case of a patient operated for colon adenocarcinoma who exhibited a single intracardiac secondary localization. Although the mass was huge, the patient was co

The diagnosis of benign metastasizing leiomyoma BML is a casuic case. The term is used to describe a entity of neoplasms characterized by a proliferation of smooth muscle cells with low mitotic index, usually located outside female genital organs. In the world literature there are reports of benign metastasizing leiomyomas in the lungs, skull base and spine, the lymph nodes of the small pelvis and the heart. In the following study the authors analyzed a case of a 72-year-old woman in which, during hysterectomy due to uterine leiomyomas, a nodule of the small intestine was found, confirmed hist

BACKGROUND: Carney syndrome is an uncommon autosomal disorder closely linked to mutations in the PRKAR1A gene. Skin lesions are the most pronounced feature of Carney syndrome, affecting over 80% of individuals with this condition. This syndrome is characterized by a triad of myxomas, skin pigmentation, and endocrine hyperfunction, featuring multiple endocrine neoplasms with skin and cardiac involvement. Dilated cardiomyopathy, a primary cardiomyopathy, is defined as the dilation and impaired systolic function of the left or both ventricles. Its clinical presentation varies from being asymptoma
