Antidepressant-like effect of acute dose of Naringin involves suppression of NR1 and activation of protein kinase A/cyclic adenosine monophosphate response element-binding protein/brain-derived neurotrophic factor signaling in hippocampus.

Naringin (Nr) has been identified to have antidepressant-like effects through repeated treatment. However, the underlying mechanism of the rapid antidepressant-like effects of Nr was still unclear. The present study used behavioral tests, classic depressive model and pharmacological methods to reveal the rapid antidepressant-like potential of Nr. We found that a single dose of Nr (20 mg/kg) produced antidepressant-like action after 2 h in the tail suspension test (TST) and forced swimming test (FST). Moreover, ketamine-like effects were also demonstrated by using the chronic mild stress model

Brief Social Isolation in the Adolescent Wistar-Kyoto Rat Model of Endogenous Depression Alters Corticosterone and Regional Monoamine Concentrations.

The Wistar-Kyoto rat (WKY) model has been suggested as a model of adult and adolescent depression though face, predictive and construct validities of the model to depression remain equivocal. The suitability of the WKY as a diathesis model that tests the double-hit hypothesis, particularly during critical periods of brain and behavioural development remains to be established. Here, effects of post-weaning social isolation were assessed during early adolescence (~30pnd) on behavioural despair and learned helplessness in the forced swim test (FST), plasma corticosterone levels and tissue monoami

Care satisfaction, hope, and life functioning among adults with bipolar disorder: data from the first 1000 participants in the Systematic Treatment Enhancement Program.

OBJECTIVE: The Systematic Treatment Enhancement Program for Bipolar Disorder (STEP-BD) is designed to evaluate the longitudinal outcome of patients with bipolar disorder. The STEP-BD disease-management model is built on evidence-based practices and a collaborative care approach designed to maximize specific and nonspecific treatment mechanisms. This prospective study examined the longitudinal relationships between patients' satisfaction with care, levels of hope, and life functioning in the first 1000 patients to enter STEP-BD. METHODS: The study used scores from the Care Satisfaction Questio

[Psychiatric complication of an implanted automatic defibrillator].

The implantable automatic defibrillator has completely changed the prognosis of potentially fatal ventricular arrhythmias by the delivery of an electric shock in the event of ventricular tachycardia or fibrillation. This vital device is sometimes poorly accepted from the psychological point of view by patients having been traumatised by experiences of sudden death from which they have been rescuscitated. Anxiety and depression are common and they have an important effect on the quality of life. The unpredictable occurrence of painful, multiple and uncontrollable electrical shocks may induce a

Chronic, combinatorial targeting of NMDARs and 5-HT4Rs exerts extended behavioral effects against stress-induced perseverative behavior and hyponeophagia.

Serotonin (5-HT) receptors and N-methyl-D-aspartate receptors (NMDARs) have both been implicated in stress-induced psychiatric disorders. However, there is a paucity of studies evaluating the effectiveness of novel combinatorial pharmacological treatments to treat stress-related disorders. Here, we evaluated whether administration of combinatorial (R,S)-ketamine, an NMDAR antagonist and Food and Drug Administration (FDA)-approved anesthetic, and prucalopride, a 5-HT type IV receptor (5-HT4R) agonist and FDA-approved drug for chronic idiopathic constipation (CIC), would have additional effects

Timing-dependent effects of maternal separation stress in female rats: Insights into sex differences.

Rodent maternal separation (MS) models have been widely used to investigate the effects of early life stress (ELS) on neural development. However, the presence of sex differences in timing-dependent specificity has yet to be confirmed. The objective of this was to elucidate the timing-dependent specificity of MS in female rats and compare it with that previously reported using male rats. Female Long-Evans rat pups were randomly divided into three groups: early MS (Early-MS: postnatal day [PND] 1‒9); late MS (Late-MS: PND 10‒20); and control (CTL). All groups were evaluated for psychiatric diso

The extended unconscious group field and metabolization of pandemic experience: dreaming together to keep cohesion alive.

Working with dreams in groups allows an understanding of phenomena that characterise the unconscious as a total unity. The dreamer becomes the vehicle of emotions, fantasies, and anxieties that dominate the group at a given moment, allowing them to be understood and processed. The analysis of shared dreams can further our understanding of emotional concerns related to the COVID-19 pandemic and its psychological repercussions. Six sessions of social dreaming were conducted during the COVID-19 pandemic period. Our aim was not to investigate differences between and within groups: the analysis was

Enhanced cholinergic-tone during the stress induce a depressive-like state in mice.

Major depressive disorder has a heterogeneous etiology, since it arises from the interaction of multiple factors and different pathophysiological mechanisms are involved in the symptomatology. This study aimed to investigate the role of the cholinergic system in the susceptibility to stress and, consequently, in the depression-like behavior. C57BL/6 mice were treated with Physostigmine (PHYS), an acetylcholinesterase (AChE) inhibitor, and were submitted to the social defeat stress. For the behavioral evaluation of the locomotor activity, anxiety-like and depression-like behaviors the open fiel

Reactivity of 5-HT1A receptor in adult rats after neonatal noradrenergic neurons' lesion--implications for antidepressant-like action.

The aim of this study was to assess the 5-HT1A receptor reactivity after neonatal noradrenergic neurons' lesion. DSP-4 (N-(2-chloroethyl)-N-ethyl-2-bromobenzylamine), 50 mg/kg, was administered 30 min after a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI)--zimelidine (10 mg/kg) on the 1st and 3rd day of life. Zimelidine was used to prevent serotonin (5-HT) depletion. 5-HT1A autoreceptor is involved in the regulation of 5-HT release as well as the pathogenesis of depression. During a microdialysis study of anaesthetized rats, the 5-HT1A receptor agonist, R-(+)-8-OH-DPAT (0.1 mg/kg), decreased 5-

Behavioral characterization and modulation of circadian rhythms by light and melatonin in C3H/HeN mice homozygous for the RORbeta knockout.

This study reports for the first time the effects of retinoid-related orphan receptors [RORbeta; receptor gene deletion RORbeta(C3H)(-/-)] in C3H/HeN mice on behavioral and circadian phenotypes. Pineal melatonin levels showed a robust diurnal rhythm with high levels at night in wild-type (+/+), heterozygous (+/-), and knockout (-/-) mice. The RORbeta(C3H)(-/-) mice displayed motor ("duck gait," hind paw clasping reflex) and olfactory deficits, and reduced anxiety and learned helplessness-related behaviors. Circadian rhythms of wheel-running activity in all genotypes showed entrainment to the l

A helpful way to conceptualize and understand reenactments.

Attempts to understand the purpose and the etiology of reenactments can lead to confusion because reenactments can occur for a variety of reasons. At times, individuals actively reenact past traumas as a way to master them. However, in other cases, reenactments occur inadvertently and result from the psychological vulnerabilities and defensive strategies characteristic of trauma survivors. This article offers a means to conceptualize and understand the many ways in which reenactments can occur. Psychotherapeutic strategies are offered to help individuals integrate past traumas and decrease the

Platelet imipramine binding and plasma cortisol levels in Israeli civilians during the Gulf War.

[3H] Imipramine binding to platelets and plasma cortisol levels were measured in nine Israeli civilians before, during, and after repeated missile attacks. Hamilton Anxiety Rating Scale (HARS), and Beck Depression Inventory (BDI) were similar before and during the war and decreased significantly after the war. A trend toward increase in platelet imipramine binding values was observed during the war when compared with the postwar values (19%; p = 0.056), and/or when compared with prewar values (26%; p = 0.063). However, one-way analysis of variance with repeated measures did not reveal a signif

The symptom structure of panic attacks.

Panic attack symptomatology was investigated in 212 panic disorder patients (60 men, 152 women) using the Panic Attack Questionnaire, Feelings of helplessness and thoughts of escape had the highest mean severity ratings, but are not currently listed in the DSM-III-R. The DSM-III-R symptoms labeled choking or smothering sensations, paresthesias, nausea, and chest pain had low severity ratings. Evidence was obtained for a three-factor model of panic symptomatology consisting of dizziness-related symptoms, cardiorespiratory distress, and cognitive factors. These results provide only limited suppo

mPFC DCC coupling with CaMKII+ neuronal excitation participates in behavioral despair in male mice.

A longed lack of control over harmful stimuli can lead to learned helplessness (LH), a significant factor in depression. However, the cellular and molecular mechanisms underlying LH, and eventually behavioral despair, remain largely unknown. The deleted in colorectal cancer (dcc) gene is associated with the risk of depression. However, the therapeutic potential and regulation mechanism of DCC in behavioral despair are still uncertain. In this study, we showed that depressive stimulators, including LH, lipopolysaccharide, and unpredictable chronic mild stress, triggered an elevation in DCC expr

Buspirone, a 5-HT1A agonist attenuates social isolation-induced behavior deficits in rats: a comparative study with fluoxetine.

Social isolation is a potent stressor in both humans and animals that results in increased anger-like emotion, (anger in humans), aggression and suicidal ideation in humans [suicidal trait-related behavior in rats (STRB)]. The study's purpose was to compare the effects of buspirone (BUS) and fluoxetine (Flx) on social isolation-induced behavior deficits in rats. The male Wistar rats were randomized into six groups and caged individually for 14 days except for the non stress control (nSC) group. They were then divided into the following groups, stress control (SC), Flx (30), BUS (10), BUS (20)
