Chronic aortic dissections and pseudoaneurysms caused by chest trauma are rare and generally have to be critically distinguished from non-traumatic dissections and aneurysms. We present a well-documented case of a post-traumatic aortic dissection that ruptured about 9 months after chest trauma. A motorcyclist sustained fractures of the forearm and chest trauma with paravertebral rib serial fractures and hemopneumothorax. Nine months after the accident, echocardiography revealed a pseudoaneurysm that ruptured 3 months later and 1 month prior to the planned surgery. An autopsy showed pericardial

Left ventricular outflow tract obstruction (LVOTO) is sometimes accompanied by aortic stenosis (AS). Reliable estimation of the true severity of AS is often difficult because it cannot be discriminated from dual stenosis. A 75-year-old woman was referred to our hospital due to traumatic hemopneumothorax with exertional dyspnea. Echocardiography revealed AS and LVOTO by chance. A continuous Doppler echocardiography revealed a late-systolic peaking dagger-shaped profile with a 6.0 m/s of peak jet velocity across the LVOT and aortic valve, but it was difficult to discriminate between the coexisti

Thoracic injuries are significant causes of morbidity and mortality in trauma patients. Traumatic pulmonary contusion and/or laceration are often observed in patients with chest trauma, explosion injuries or a shock wave associated with penetrating trauma. A pulmonary contusion is an injury to the lung parenchyma without actual structural damage. As a result of damage to alveoli and capillaries, it results in leakage of blood and other interstitial fluids across the alveolar-capillary membrane into lung tissue and alveolar space. Since oxygenated air can not enter into fluid-filled alveoli, hy

BACKGROUND: COVID-19 has become a global pandemic. It has affected patients the world over, and when minimally symptomatic, it can be an incidental finding in trauma patients. It may also make the diagnosis of other rare conditions more difficult due to clinical finding superimposition.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 23-year-old male was transferred to our Trauma Center in hemorrhagic shock after sustaining multiple gunshot wounds in the upper back. Imaging showed a retained projectile in the right pharyngeal area, a right upper lobe contusion, and a right hemopneumothorax; with additional infiltrates

BACKGROUND: Patients who experience trauma, particularly thoracic trauma, may be at risk for missed cardiac injury.
CASE REPORT: We present a case of a 36-year-old male presenting to the Emergency Department (ED) as a trauma after a high-speed motor vehicle crash. After computed tomography (CT) scans revealed a right hemopneumothorax and multiple orthopedic injuries, the patient was admitted to the trauma neuroscience intensive care unit (TNICU), where telemetry revealed ST elevations. An electrocardiogram (EKG) was performed and he was noted to have an acute anterolateral STEMI. The patient

Seven patients with gunshot injury underwent emergency operations under general anesthesia. Trachea was intubated without muscle relaxants or after crash induction. Anesthesia was maintained with intravenous or volatile anesthetic agents titrated slowly. Four of seven patients fell into hypovolemic shock and were treated with aggressive intravenous volume replacement, vasopressors and catecholamines. Seven patients were given blood transfusion, of which the largest amount given was 17700 ml during the operation. Hemopneumothorax occurred in four patients, who needed intrathoracic drainage. Six

We present a case of recurrent haemo-pneumothorax in a young female patient with previously undiagnosed Ehlers-Danlos syndrome (EDS). The patient presented with a spontaneous haemo-pneumothorax not associated with menstruation. Following further subsequent episodes, left lower lobectomy was performed. In the past, the patient had suffered recurrent atraumatic bilateral patella dislocations which were never fully investigated. Histology of the lung tissue revealed features suggestive of EDS. Haemothorax is a rare complication of type IV EDS. There are very few reported cases of pulmonary presen

Haemothorax, haemopneumothorax, and pneumothorax were the most common complications in 85 patients with penetrating stab injuries of the chest. These complications were amenable to conservative treatment by aspiration or drainage of the pleural space. Immediate operation was indicated in 30 cases. Indications for surgery were haemorrhage from a major systemic or pulmonary vessel or the heart, cardiac tamponade, diaphragmatic penetration, oesophageal and bronchial tears, and sucking chest wounds. The need for immediate operation was clinically obvious at presentation in most cases. It should ha

This case report describes a patient who sustained significant subcutaneous emphysema of the chest, neck, and face, along with hemopneumothorax and multiple left-sided rib fractures with an associated flail segment following an all-terrain vehicle accident. The emphysema was treated using negative pressure wound therapy (NPWT) applied through bilateral infraclavicular "blowhole" incisions. This report examines the use of NPWT as a treatment modality for subcutaneous emphysema, assessing its efficacy in reducing the need for invasive interventions and promoting recovery. The patient's clinical

BACKGROUND: Chest tube placement is a frequently required surgical procedure among patients in the emergency department. Although the procedure is often simple, occasionally there are known complications, including unresolved pneumothorax or hemopneumothorax, extrathoracic placement of the tube, and damage to the intercostal neurovascular bundle.
OBJECTIVES: We report an unusual yet noteworthy complication of ulnar neuropathy after chest tube placement for pneumothorax. Awareness of the association between acute ulnar neuropathy and chest tube placement will alert the physician to reposition

Immediately after a moped accident a 16-year old patient was haemodynamically unstable. Following adequate drainage of a haematopneumothorax in the hospital the patient collapsed into a shock. Thoractomy revealed a tear of the right A. pulmonalis. The hilus was clamped and a lobectomy was performed. After this the patient was haemodynamically stable; due to bone and nerve damage he was transferred to a rehabilitation centre. Laceration of the A. pulmonalis as a consequence of blunt thoracic trauma is rare and mostly fatal. In the case of a patient with a massive haematothorax rapid transport t

Pneumorachis, or air within the spinal canal, has rarely been described, particularly in conjunction with thoracic trauma. We report a case of pneumorachis and pneumocephalus in a patient with a tension pneumothorax and multiple closed thoracic spinal fractures.

Our experience indicates a continued rising incidence of gunshot wounds of the chest in the United States. During the past 4 1/2 years, 250 consecutive cases were treated at the King-Drew Medical Center in Los Angeles. Ninety per cent presented with a haemothorax or haemopneumothorax. Pneumothorax alone was present in only 3 per cent of cases. Twenty per cent had associated intra-abdominal injuries, involving mostly the diaphragm, liver, spleen and the gastrointestinal tract. Eighty per cent were treated with tube thoracostomy and among these there were 2 deaths, neither being related to the c

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the results of treatment of postoperative complications in one surgical center over 10 years.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: There were 100 patients with intrapleural complications and indications for surgical correction after various cardiothoracic interventions between 2013 and 2023.
RESULTS: Mortality after thoracoscopic surgeries for cardiothoracic complications was 5%. There were 3 patients after on-pump cardiac and aortic surgeries, 1 patient after right-sided pneumonectomy with resection of the tracheobronchial angle. In all cases, the indication for video-assisted thora

OBJECTIVES: This study aims to reduce mortality and morbidity by analyzing the factors associated with blunt chest trauma.
METHODS: In this study, 1020 patients with blunt thoracic trauma were analyzed retrospectively. Major surgeries, complications, admission to intensive care unit, intubation, mortality, prolonged hospital stay were considered poor clinical outcomes. Independent variables were compared with clinical outcomes and analyzed.
RESULTS: The mean age was 52.7 ± 19.1. Complications (p = 0.028) and mortality (p < 0.001) were higher in patients aged 65 years and older than those age

RATIONALE: Rib fractures are common among patients with blunt chest wall trauma and often represent life-altering injuries.
PATIENT CONCERNS: A 31-year-old woman presented with right chest trauma, with pain and bleeding as a result of a traffic accident 1 hour previously.
DIAGNOSES: Chest computed tomography showed open chest trauma, multiple rib fractures, flail chest, hemopneumothorax, and lung contusion on the right side.
INTERVENTIONS: We decided to perform debridement via emergency, thoracoscopic exploration to remove blood and contaminants from the chest cavity. Thereafter, the third

We encountered a case in which emergency surgery was performed for a penetrating lung injury complicated by a hemodynamic cerebral infarction. A 45-year-old man sustained a chest injury due to a scattered piece of metal and was admitted to a nearby hospital. He was confirmed to have hemorrhagic shock due to a right hemopneumothorax, and a chest tube was inserted he was transferred to our hospital. Chest radiography and computed tomography (CT) revealed a metal fragment in the right lung and confirmed the diagnosis of a penetrating lung injury due to a foreign body. The patient also presented w
