BACKGROUND & AIMS: Hepatitis B Virus (HBV) DNA during chronic infection can reach levels at which mother-to-child (MTC) transmission frequently occurs despite passive-active immunization of newborns. Hepatitis D Virus (HDV) RNA can reach high levels, we assessed HBV/HDV MTC co-transmission.
METHODS: Monocentric retrospective study (registered in ClinicalTrials.gov (NCT02044055)), after informed consent in HBV/HDV co-infected women pregnant between 01/01/2004 and 01/01/2015 in Paris, France. The children were tested when 24 months of age or older.
RESULTS: Twenty-two (3%) of 742 HBV infected

BACKGROUND/AIMS: Effective hepatitis B virus control has warranted a decline in hepatitis B virus prevalence over the world with a relevant reduction in hepatitis B virus-associated delta hepatitis. However, despite the dramatic decline in hepatitis D virus infection rate, no further decrease was recorded after 2000. This cross-sectional study aims to investigate: I- The prevalence of hepatitis D virus co-infection in children with hepatitis B virus infection in Western Turkey; II- The influence of neonatal hepatitis B virus vaccination on hepatitis D virus co-infection rate; and III- The impa

Currently, the best option for patients with hepatitis delta is interferon alpha therapy for at least one year. To evaluate the effect of the combination lamivudine-high-dose interferon alpha therapy, we first treated eight patients with chronic hepatitis delta infection with lamivudine for at least 24 weeks; then lamivudine was combined with a high dose of interferon alpha followed by a regular dose (9 MU tiw). Follow-up was 12 weeks. Virological, biochemical and histological features were evaluated for response to therapy. At baseline, all patients were HBsAg positive in serum and HDV RNA-(P

Daily subcutaneous bulevirtide (BLV) 2 mg has been approved as first-line treatment for chronic hepatitis D (CHD), but long-term real-world adherence data are limited. We assessed adherence rates during BLV therapy and their impact on treatment response. HERACLIS_BLV_D study (NCT05928000) included adult CHD patients initiating BLV 2 mg/day and followed in routine clinical practice. Virological response (VR) was defined as HDV RNA < 57.5 IU/mL or decline > 2 log10 and biochemical response (BR) as normal ALT (≤ 40 IU/L). Adherence was evaluated through the national prescription system based on e

BACKGROUND & AIMS: HDV affects 4.5-13% of chronic hepatitis B (CHB) patients globally, yet the prevalence of HDV infection in Canada is unknown. To investigate the prevalence, genotype, demographics, and clinical characteristics of HDV in Canada, we conducted a retrospective analysis of (1) HDV antibody and RNA positivity among referred specimens, and (2) a cross-sectional subset study of 135 HDV seropositive +/-RNA (HDV+) patients compared with 5,132 HBV mono-infected patients in the Canadian HBV Network.
METHODS: Anti-HDV IgG-positive specimens collected between 2012 and 2019 were RNA teste

The secosteroid hormone vitamin D has, in addition to its effects in bone metabolism also functions in the modulation of immune responses against infectious agents and in inhibiting tumorigenesis. Thus, deficiency of vitamin D is associated with several malignancies, but also with a plethora of infectious diseases. Among other communicable diseases, vitamin D deficiency is involved in the pathogenesis of chronic liver diseases caused by hepatitis B and C viruses (HBV, HCV) and high prevalence of vitamin D deficiency with serum levels below 20 mg/mL in patients with HBV and HCV infection are fo

BACKGROUND: Hepatitis B virus (HBV) is an etiological agent of acute and chronic liver disease existing throughout the world. The high genetic variability of HBV genome is reflected by eight genotypes (A to H), and each genotype has characteristic geographical distribution, which is important epidemiologically. Previous studies from the province of Sindh, Pakistan, have reported that genotypes A and D as prevalent HBV genotypes. The aim of the study was to investigate the prevalence of HBV genotypes in physically healthy females at two universities in Karachi, Sindh, Pakistan.

A 12-year-old girl with Gianotti-Crosti syndrome caused by hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection was admitted due to eruption on her extremities. Laboratory findings revealed elevation of transaminase, positivity for HB surface antigen (HBsAg), and an IgM type anti-HB core. The eruption and level of transaminase improved, and HBsAg became negative within 2 months of onset. Analysis of the virus revealed it to be genotype D with a genomic length of 3,182 bases and the HBsAg serotype was ayw3, which is very rare in Japan. The possible relationship between Gianotti-Crosti syndrome and HBV genotype D

Different genotypes of the hepatitis viruses may influence the clinical outcome of the disease. The distribution of genotypes may vary according to geographical regions. The aim of this study was to evaluate hepatitis B virus (HBV), hepatitis C virus (HCV) and hepatitis D virus (HDV) genotypes in Turkish patients with chronic hepatitis in a large cohort of patients. Genotyping was performed in 41, 59 and 365 patients with chronic hepatitis B, D and C, respectively, and 36 hemodialysis patients with chronic hepatitis C. Genotypes were determined by direct sequencing in hepatitis B and by polyme

We observed 367 children with chronic viral hepatitis Delta (CVHD) and B (CVHB) and found strict secondary T-immunodeficiency, more expressed in children with CVHD. We have found also the most characterizing changes of lymphocytes subpopulation and natural killer-cells depending on etiology of CVH. As for CVHD it is characterized by more significant decrease in CD4-lymphocytes, as for CVHB--CD8-lymphocytes. The above mentioned changes of lymphocytes subpopulation in patients with CVHD and CVHB show different pathological mechanisms of these two diseases, that should be taken into account treat

Hepatitis B virus (HBV) is strongly associated with an aggressive type of chronic active liver disease (CALD) and hepatocellular carcinoma, which tend to present in the relatively young, in sub-Saharan Africa. It is known that co-existent infection with HDV tends to aggravate the course of HBV-associated liver disease. This study was carried out to determine the sero-prevalence of hepatitis D virus (HDV) among thirty one consecutive southwestern Nigerians with HBsAg-positive, HCV antibody-negative chronic liver disease. Alongside, we tested for HBsAg and the HDV antigen in fifty randomly selec

Superinfection of hepatitis D virus (HDV) among hepatitis B virus (HBV) carriers is mainly through heterosexual contact in Taiwan. This study investigated the change of HDV endemicity and its associated contributory factors. Seventy-seven patients with acute HDV superinfection among 527 consecutive exacerbating hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg) carriers were identified over the past 12 years. The prevalence decreased significantly by each 3-year period from June 1983 to May 1995 (23.7, 15.5, 13.1 and 4.2%, respectively, P < 0.001). This trend was more significant in the hepatitis B e antigen

To calculate the prevalence of hepatitis D virus (HDV) superinfection, antibody to HDV (anti-HD) was tested on admission in 696 hepatitis B virus (HBV) chronic carriers diagnosed between 1979 and 1992. Anti-HD was positive in 67 patients (9.6%), and it was more frequently detected in i.v. drug abusers (IVDA) (59/74, 79.7%) than in non-IVDA (8/622, 1.3%) (p = 0.0001). The prevalence of anti-HD was higher in HBV chronic carriers diagnosed between 1979 and 1985 (33/219, 15.1%) than in those diagnosed from 1986 to 1992 (34/477, 7.1%) (p < 0.001). However, these figures were not different when IVDA

Hepatitis delta virus (HDV) has been detected in the minor salivary gland (MSG) tissue of Sjögren's disease (SjD) patients in the absence of a hepatitis B virus (HBV) coinfection. Previous research has shown that HDV antigen (HDAg) expression can trigger an SjD-like phenotype in vivo, demonstrating a potential cause-and-effect relationship. We hypothesize that if HDV plays a role in the development of SjD, then HDV profiles may be correlated with disease manifestations. This retrospective study characterized HDV in a cohort of 48 SjD MSG samples collected between 2014 and 2021. Analyses of HDA

Hepatitis Delta Virus (HDV) is an RNA virus that requires the presence of hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg) to propagate into hepatocytes, with Genotype I being more prevalent globally. However, the prevalence of HDV genotypes in Taiwan is unknown. Accordingly, a cohort including 24 chronic HBV patients who received nucleos(t)ides (NUCs) between January 2002 and July 2018 was used to determine HDV genotypes and genotype specific serological association in chronic HBV carriers. HDV-positive genotypes in 18/24 (75%) males and 6/24 (25%) females were identified among chronic HBV patients. Virem
