The Meaning of Critical Illness for People Suffering From COVID-19: When a Frightening Unreality Becomes Reality.

The aim of this study was to elucidate the meaning of critical illness for people with COVID-19. This study used a qualitative design. Thirteen people who were critically ill with COVID-19 during 2020 and admitted to a COVID-19 intensive care unit in northern Sweden participated in the study. Data collection was conducted as individual interviews with a narrative approach, and data were analyzed with phenomenological hermeneutic interpretation. The participants did not think they would get critically ill with this unexpected illness. They experienced terrible nightmares where their relatives h

Experiences of Older Men Living Alone: A Qualitative Study.

More and more old people live alone, and living alone is reported to be a key risk factor for experiencing loneliness and developing poor health. The purpose of this qualitative study was to explore the experiences of living alone for older men. Systematic text condensation and hermeneutic interpretation were used in analysis of the data. Four themes emerged: lonely at times, missing and longing for a shared life, keeping active, and some kind of freedom. The findings revealed that inner and outer resources come into play and have influence on the processes of managing and solving the situatio

People living with long-term illnesses are in need of help and support to manage their daily lives. Twelve adults with extensive needs for help and support were interviewed. A phenomenological hermeneutic interpretation was used to analyse the interview texts. The findings show that balance in everyday life for people with long-term illnesses means striving for independence through care and support in their surroundings. It was also important to be able to choose how

Sustaining self: the lived experience of transition to long-term ventilation.

Long-term mechanical ventilation (LTMV) is used to support growing numbers of children and adults who develop chronic respiratory failure. The purpose of this hermeneutic phenomenological study was to explore the subjective meaning of the experience of transition from spontaneous breathing to reliance on LTMV. In-depth, audiorecorded interviews of 11 ventilated individuals living in a western Canadian province were transcribed and analyzed. The transition journey was revealed to be a time of psychological, physical, and spiritual challenge. "Sustaining self " was revealed as the essence of ven

[Not Available].

Endometriosis is one of the most frequent gynecological disorders in the reproductive age. Discrepancies between clinical findings and subjective Symptoms cause the question of the determing factors for the subjective experience. In the present study an hermeneutic, sense-orientated approach was employed by using qualitative methods of research. Eleven interviews with endometriosis patients were recorded on tape and transcribed, followed by an individual-case and a comparative analysis in partly deductively and inductively defined categories. The psychosexual development has been found as nega

[Changes in the internal object world in an obsessive-compulsive patient during 3 years ambulatory psychotherapy. A study with the Repertory Grid Technique].

The significance of the repertory-grid technique, which is based on Kelly's theory of personal constructs for the analysis of course and change of behavioral abnormalities, is assessed in a case report on the psychotherapy of an obsessive compulsive patient. The method delineates judgements regarding herself, significant other persons, and disease conceptualizations. This idiographic method, situated between empirical and hermeneutic techniques, is particularly valuable for the detection of psychotherapeutic changes. Traditional procedures that aim at invariance of values can be lacking in sen

Disordered recognition and perception of human faces in acute schizophrenia and experimental psychosis.

Three disorders of facial recognition and perception in acute schizophrenia and mescaline-induced psychosis are described and illustrated using original clinical and experimental material: "affective prosopagnosia" or stress-related dysfunctional face recognition; "physiognomization" of the environment or persistent illusions and hallucinations of nonspecific faces; and the "mirror phenomenon" or the experience of inner alienation from one's reflected face, which is perceived as independently alive, sinister, and generally physically distorted. It is proposed that neuropsychology suggests rela

Quality of life among undergraduate nursing students in Palestine: A Heideggerian phenomenological study.

BACKGROUND: Quality of life (QoL) influences nursing students' academic engagement, professional development, and overall well-being. In conflict-affected regions, like Palestine, sociopolitical instability further influences how QoL is lived and interpreted. Although growing attention to nursing students' well-being, little qualitative research has explored the lived meaning of QoL among Palestinian nursing students. AIM: To explore undergraduate nursing students' lived experiences of QoL in Palestine, and to identify key factors shaping these experiences. DESIGN: A qualitative study inform

Epistemic Injustice in Rheumatoid Arthritis Care: A Narrative Review of Invisible Suffering, Ageism, and Treatment Delay.

Despite advances in disease-modifying therapies and treat-to-target strategies, many patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) continue to experience persistent pain, fatigue, and functional impairment. These symptoms are particularly common among older adults and are frequently under-recognized in clinical practice. This study examines RA care through the lens of epistemic injustice to explore how patients' experiential knowledge is interpreted, valued, or discounted, and how these processes contribute to treatment delay in aging societies. We conducted a narrative review of peer-reviewed liter

Myth, Meaning, and Mental Health: Rollo May's Existential Psychology in Dialogue with Contemporary Religion and Health Research.

The contemporary mental health crisis is increasingly described in terms of meaninglessness, fragmentation of identity, and spiritual disorientation. While empirical research in religion and health has demonstrated consistent associations between religiosity, spirituality, and psychological well-being, the underlying symbolic and narrative mechanisms that sustain these associations remain insufficiently theorized. This article revisits Rollo May's concept of myth as a foundational structure of psychological integration and examines its relevance for contemporary religion and health scholarship

From Feeling Broken to Looking Beyond Broken: Palestinian Mothers' Experiences of Having a Child With Spina Bifida.

Spina bifida (SB) is the second most common birth defect worldwide. Mothers of children with SB face extraordinary challenges due to the complicated conditions and disability of their children. Little is known about the impact of these challenges on the mothers' well-being, particularly in Middle Eastern culture, where chronic illness and disability are perceived as a stigma, and care of disabled children has traditionally been the responsibility of the mother. The aim of this study was to illuminate mothers' lived experience of having a child with SB in Palestine. Twenty Arab-Muslim mothers l

Fathers' experiences of being in change during pregnancy and early parenthood in a context of intimate partner violence.

OBJECTIVE: Intimate partner violence (IPV) is a large public health problem with far-reaching consequences for those involved. The aim of this study was to explore fathers' experiences of change during pregnancy and early parenthood in the context of IPV. METHODS: The methodological approach in this interview study was hermeneutics, based on a lifeworld perspective. Suprapubic catheters--a shared understanding, from the other side looking in.

OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study was to explore the experiences of people living with a suprapubic catheter. METHOD: This descriptive study was guided by the philosophy of Gadamerian hermeneutics. Data were gathered via indepth interviews with 6 adults living in the community who had a suprapubic catheter for long-term urinary bladder drainage. Interpretation of the data occurred via thematic analysis of the participants' stories. RESULTS: Two distinct but interrelated themes emerged. Participants shifted, over time, from negative to positive experiences (psychologically, physically, a

Losing the identity of a hockey player: the long-term effects of concussions.

AIM: To describe what suffering multiple concussions meant for former semi-professional or professional hockey players who were forced to end their career. RESULTS: Nine former Swedish hockey players, who once played on national or professional teams were interviewed. The interviews were analyzed with reference to hermeneutic phenomenology to interpret and explain their experiences. The theme of losing one's identity as a hockey player was constructed from five subthemes: being limited in everyday life, returning to the hockey stadium as soon as possible, forming a post career identity, lacki

The lived experience of genital warts: the Swedish example.

Our aim in this study was to analyze and describe young Swedish women's experiences of living with genital warts. Interviews with 10 young women, aged 16-21 years, were interpreted within a lifeworld hermeneutic tradition. The women experience themselves as victims of a disgusting disease. Furthermore, they appear to disregard the fact that their own lifestyles could be a risk factor for contracting venereal infections. On the other hand they get to know their bodies better after the gynecological examinations where the treatment begins. Their loss of innocence is considerable; thus it seems f

Exploring dyadic recovery needs in non-attendance to cardiac rehabilitation: a qualitative study of patients and their relatives.

PURPOSE: Non-attendance in cardiac rehabilitation remains a challenge. The underlying needs and preferences of patients and relatives are not well understood. This study aims to explore their experiences during early recovery after cardiac surgery to identify key barriers to participation and opportunities for more person-centred rehabilitation pathways. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This qualitative, explorative study was grounded in hermeneutic phenomenology. Semi-structured interviews, conducted individually or dyadically, involved a purposeful sample of patients who had cardiac surgery and did n

When are infection risks of blood transfusion tolerable? Towards understanding the ethical views of stakeholders in the blood supply.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: The perception of transfusion-transmitted infections (TTIs) is sensitive to various concerns besides the probability and impact of infection, and some of these concerns may be ethically relevant. This paper aims to advance thinking about blood safety policies by exploring and explaining stakeholders' reasons to consider TTI risks tolerable or intolerable. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Inspired by critical empirical ethics and phenomenological hermeneutics, we held interviews and focus group discussions to explore the moral experience of policymakers, hematologists, blood d

Culture, Psychiatry and Epigenetics.

Regarding the methodology of ethnopsychiatric research, for example, on the Vietnamese Mo Mường's burial rituals or the health-promoting and healing effects of the Chinese Tujia dances, three different approaches can be distinguished: phenomenological-descriptive methods, hermeneutic-interpretive techniques and studies on underlying mechanisms such as hypnotherapeutic or neuroendocrine dynamics. Since epigenetics has shown that cultural and artistic experiences can influence gene expression and genetic functioning, even across generations, the article argues for greater consideration of epigen

[Action-research in artisanal fishing communities affected by the oil spill crime disaster].

The aim of this article is to describe the experience of researchers in applying action research as a methodological tool in territories of artisanal fishing affected by the oil disaster that occurred in 2019 on the Northeast coast of Brazil. This is a critical-reflective hermeneutic study, based on the analysis of researchers' experiences reports, and field diaries developed during research activities conducted between 2021 and 2023. Immersing oneself in reality and territorializing knowledge beyond an epistemic matter contributes to the dialogical process in territories, strengthening aspect

Sexuality in male partners of women with fibromyalgia syndrome: A qualitative study.

The aim of our study was to understand how male partners of women diagnosed with fibromyalgia syndrome perceive sexuality. Gadamerian hermeneutic phenomenology and the Roy Adaptation Model provided the overall framework for this research study. Eighteen participants were recruited through convenience and purposive sampling. Data collection was conducted between February and July of 2017 and included a focus group and twelve in-depth interviews. Two main themes were extracted: "facing a new sex life" and "resisting the loss of the couple's sexuality". Fibromyalgia syndrome compromises the coupl
