Monoamine oxidase molecular activity in platelets of parkinsonian and demented patients.

Platelet monoamine oxidase activity levels have been evaluated in several neuropsychiatric disorders, to identify biochemical markers for pathological brain functioning. In the present work, we assayed both total and molecular monoamine oxidase activity in platelets of parkinsonian and demented patients: both showed significantly higher enzyme activity values than healthy controls. Thus, high platelet monoamine oxidase activity levels seem to be related to an increased intrinsic activity of single enzyme molecules. A significant positive correlation was found between platelet monoamine oxidase

Association between postoperative delirium and heart rate variability in the intensive care unit and readmissions and mortality in elderly patients with cardiovascular surgery.

This study aimed to investigate the relationship between heart rate variability (HRV), a parameter of the autonomic nervous system activity (ANSA), and postoperative delirium and postoperative events. This retrospective cohort study included elderly patients aged 65 years or older who were admitted to the intensive care unit (ICU) after cardiovascular surgery. ANSA was measured using HRV parameters for 1 h at daytime and 1 h at night-time before ICU discharge. The primary endpoint was the effect of HRV parameters and delirium on mortality and readmission rates within 1 year after discharge, an

Alkali Burn Induced Corneal Spontaneous Pain and Activated Neuropathic Pain Matrix in the Central Nervous System in Mice.

PURPOSE: To explore whether alkali burn causes corneal neuropathic pain and activates the neuropathic pain matrix in the central nervous system in mice. METHODS: A corneal alkali burn mouse model (grade II) was used. The mechanical threshold in the cauterized area was tested using Von Frey hairs. Spontaneous pain behavior was investigated with conditioned place preference. Phosphor extracellular signal-regulated kinase (ERK), which is a marker for neuronal activation in chronic pain processing, was investigated in several representative areas of the neuropathic pain matrix: the 2 regions of t

Gut bacteria and their metabolites may influence our decisions, intelligence, cognition, and consciousness.

The human gut hosts approximately 38 trillion bacteria, representing 400 to 500 species. Gut bacteria are in constant communication with the central nervous system (CNS) via the enteric nervous system (ENS), the peripheral nervous system (PNS), the autonomic nervous system (ANS), the immune system, the enteroendocrine system (EES), and the vagus nerve (VN). Short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs), especially butyrate, strengthen the blood-brain barrier (BBB) and modulate inflammatory signaling, thereby affecting brain function and cognitive performance. Acetate enhances the synthesis of lipid-rich mye

Neurophysiology of Rett syndrome.

Rett syndrome is a neurodevelopmental disorder that in most cases is consequent to a mutation in the MECP2 gene. The central nervous system is the primary organ system involved in Rett syndrome. Neurophysiologic evaluations provide information concerning the developmental aspects of Rett syndrome and the character and extent of involvement of the central, peripheral, and autonomic nervous system pathways. Evoked potentials typically demonstrate intactness of peripheral auditory and visual pathways and suggest dysfunction of central or "higher" cortical pathways. Somatosensory evoked potentials

Parasympathetic functioning and sleep problems in children with autism spectrum disorder.

Respiratory sinus arrhythmia (RSA), an index of parasympathetic nervous system activity, has been linked with sleep quality among children with neurotypical development. The current study extended examination of these processes to children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD), a group at considerable risk for sleep problems. Participants included 54 children with ASD (aged 6-10 years, 43% Hispanic). RSA data were collected via a wired MindWare system during a 3-min baseline and a 3-min challenge task. Parents reported on their children's sleep problems and sleep duration using the Children's Sl

The association between extracellular fluid volume and sympathetic nervous system activity in patients with chronic kidney disease.

Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is associated with hypervolemia and sympathetic nervous system (SNS) overactivity that both contribute to heightened cardiovascular risk. Classically, extracellular fluid volume (ECFV) is inversely related to SNS activity, whereby increased ECFV suppresses SNS activation. However, ECFV and SNS activity could be concomitantly elevated if there is failure to suppress SNS activity or if SNS activity plays a contributory role in ECFV expansion. Therefore, we examined the clinical determinants of increased ECFV, the association between ECFV and SNS activity, and whether

Antifungal activity of Allamanda polyantha seed extract and its iridoids promote morphological alterations in Cryptococcus spp.

Cryptococcosis, caused by Cryptococcus spp., is an invasive fungal infection of the central nervous system, associated with high mortality, affecting mainly immunocompromised patients. Due to the development of resistance to the current therapy, there is an urgent need for less toxic and more effective antifungal agents. In this study, we describe the antifungal activity against Cryptococcus spp. of an aqueous seed extract from Allamanda polyantha (ASEAP) and two iridoids, plumieride and plumieridine, isolated from this extract with an antifungal activity. The capsule formation and the morphol

Autonomic regulation during rest and mental load in Gilles de la Tourette syndrome.

Cardiovascular and catecholaminergic activity during mental load were studied in patients with Tourette syndrome. Patients and controls performed the Color Word Test, preceded by a baseline period, with continuous measurements of heart rate and blood pressure. Blood samples for assay of plasma catecholamine concentrations were obtained before and during the test. The patients showed higher heart rate and blood pressure during baseline than controls, but no differences regarding plasma catecholamines. The tics corresponded with transient increases in heart rate and blood pressure. Spectral anal

Under the surface: Low cardiac vagal tone and poor interoception in young adults with subclinical depressive symptoms.

INTRODUCTION: Depressive symptoms are associated with alterations in central and autonomic nervous system activity, including misperception of bodily activity (e.g., low interoception), somatic symptoms and decreased vagally mediated heart rate variability (vmHRV). However, there is a lack of studies that examine both perception of bodily activity and autonomic function in depression. The present study investigated the association between interoception, vmHRV, and subclinical depressive symptoms. METHOD: Eighty-eight students were enrolled and vmHRV was calculated from a 5-minute resting elec

Nocturnal autonomic nervous system activity impairment in sickle cell trait carriers.

Sickle cell trait (SCT) is a genetic disease affecting the synthesis of normal haemoglobin (Hb) and marked by the heterozygous presence of HbA and HbS. Some studies have suggested that SCT carriers might be prone to vascular alterations, cardiac ischaemia and arrhythmias leading, in some subjects, to sudden death. It is well known that a loss or a disequilibrium of autonomic activity are powerful predictors of sudden cardiac death. We hypothesized that SCT subjects might exhibit alterations in the activity of the autonomic nervous system that could constitute further risk factors for cardiac c

Autonomic nerves and circadian control of renal function.

Cardiovascular and renal physiology follow strong circadian rhythms. For instance, renal excretion of solutes and water is higher during the active period compared to the inactive period, and blood pressure peaks early in the beginning of the active period of both diurnal and nocturnal animals. The control of these rhythms is largely dependent on the expression of clock genes both in the central nervous system and within peripheral organs themselves. Although it is understood that the central and peripheral clocks interact and communicate, few studies have explored the specific mechanism by wh

Subtle involvement of the sympathetic nervous system in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis.

The literature on the involvement of the autonomic nervous system (ANS) in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is conflicting. We therefore investigated several aspects of autonomic function, namely muscle sympathetic nerve activity (MSNA), blood pressure, cardiac function (electrocardiogram; ECG), and respiration in 16 patients with sporadic ALS and in 12 age-matched healthy volunteers, both at rest and during sympathoexcitatory stimulation. We measured MSNA by provoking venous pooling during short-lasting lower body negative pressure (LBNP) and during the cold pressor test (CPT). To assess t

Sympathetic nervous function and the effect of the catechol-O-methyltransferase Val(158)Met polymorphism in patients with panic disorder.

BACKGROUND: Sympathetic nervous function abnormalities have long been suggested to be a possible etiology of panic disorder (PD). Catechol-O-methyltransferase (COMT) affects sympathetic activities, and the COMT Val(158)Met polymorphism has been suggested to be related to PD. The authors examined the relationship between sympathetic nervous function and the COMT Val(158)Met polymorphism in PD patients. METHODS: Fifty-eight patients [Val/Val (51.7%) and Met allele carriers (48.3%)] and 58 age-matched normal control subjects [Val/Val (56.9%) and Met allele carriers (43.1%)] were compared in term

A new analysis of heart rate variability in the assessment of fetal parasympathetic activity: An experimental study in a fetal sheep model.

Analysis of heart rate variability (HRV) is a recognized tool in the assessment of autonomic nervous system (ANS) activity. Indeed, both time and spectral analysis techniques enable us to obtain indexes that are related to the way the ANS regulates the heart rate. However, these techniques are limited in terms of the lack of thresholds of the numerical indexes, which is primarily due to high inter-subject variability. We proposed a new fetal HRV analysis method related to the parasympathetic activity of the ANS. The aim of this study was to evaluate the performance of our method compared to co
