BACKGROUND: As coxarthrosis progresses, pain and mobility limitation exacerbate, usually presenting as a progressive flexion-abduction contracture. This, combined with the degradation of articular ends of bones, is responsible for anatomical and functional shortening of the limb. The sensation of postoperative leg length difference is a significant problem both for the patient and the operator. A sense of the operated limb being longer may be due to excessive length of the femoral segment following total hip arthroplasty. It may also result from a postoperative abduction or flexion-abduction c

OBJECTIVE: To compare the effectiveness of arthroscopic outside-in release for gluteal muscle contracture (GMC) in supine position versus lateral decubitus position.
METHODS: The clinical data of 34 GMC patients meeting selection criteria between January 2022 and May 2023 were retrospectively analyzed. Arthroscopic contracture band release was performed in the lateral decubitus position (lateral group, n=14) or the supine position (supine group, n=20). No significant difference ( P>0.05) was observed between groups in baseline data, including gender, age, body mass index, preoperative GMC fun

30 myelomeningocele patients which were surveyed at Zurich's Children's Hospital and at the Wilhelm Schulthess Clinic in the years from 1962 to 1976 have been postexamined. Significant for the rehabilitation of these children in respect for the gaining of their best ever possible independence and capability to walk are primarily the neurosegmental level of the lesion, the remaining motor power as well as intelligence and motivation. Of secondary significance is the orthopaedic operation whereby specifically the correction of fixed deformity is important. The quantity of anesthesias should be h

Hip involvement in ankylosing spondylitis (AS) is a common and disabling problem. The clinical and x-ray records of 87 patients with definite AS (Rome criteria) were examined to define and characterize their hip disease. Clinical hip disease was present in 33 cases (38%), was usually bilateral (91%), and tended to begin early in the disease course; it was the cause of 50% of the Class III and IV disability in the entire study group. Typical findings included regional pain, limitation of motion, muscle atrophy, and flexion contractures. Radiologic hip abnormalities occurred in 42 cases (48%). T

Seventeen children with Behr syndrome were investigated, focusing on the musculoskeletal deformities and long-term outcome. Behr syndrome is characterized by optic atrophy beginning in early childhood associated with ataxia, spasticity, mental retardation, and posterior column sensory loss. The ataxia, spasticity, and muscle contractures, mainly of the hip adductors, hamstrings, and soleus, are progressive and become more prominent in the second decade. In 70% of the patients, contractures developed in the lower limbs, requiring surgery mainly for the Achilles tendon, hamstrings, and adductor

BACKGROUND: Authors analysed the post-operative course of the hip joints in ICP children following two types of surgery.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: We analysed 50 children with CP (100 hips) treated in our department between 1999-2004 whose radiological records were complete. The children were divided into 2 groups of those following open adductor tenotomy and those treated according to Gob's method, i.e. by release of the flexion-adduction hip contracture. Hip joint stability was compared radiologically with the Reimers index. Consecutive radiographs were obtained at least 6 months apart and at l

Between 1993-2003 the authors treated 5 girls with idiopathic chondrolysis of the hip joint. Their mean age at first symptoms were 9 years (range 6-11 years). In all initial symptoms were pain and a hip flexion contracture of a mean 33 degrees (range 30-40 degrees). All were treated with multiple stationary rehabilitation including traction, range of motion exercises, analgetic physical therapy and longlasting walking with crutches. At the follow up examination only one hip was I 10 degree. Remaining 4 children were painfree. In 2 of them an acetabular protrusion, hip joint space narrowing and

The authors present their methods of working out the movements in the first days after the arthroplasty of the hip joint performed according to A. C. No. 1058493 (1982). The peculiarities of the management of the patients with bilateral pathology with a steady flexion and adduction contracture or ankylosis with a faulty posture of the extremity in the opposite unoperated joint have been pointed out.

The back pain syndrome which accompanies involutional osteoporosis presents a marked heterogeneity. Acute pain may be due to vertebral fractures, whereas chronic pain may eventually accompany established osteoporosis in which clinical and instrumental evidence are present. Back pain is the consequence of the mechanical (internal or external pressure) or chemical stimulation of pain receptors present in bone tissue, along the vessels, in cartilage, joints, disk, ligaments, and also in soft tissue and muscle (with secondary antalgic contracture). The compression of spinal nerves may contribute t

BACKGROUND: Arthrogryposis Multiplex Congenita (AMC) is a heterogeneous condition characterized by multiple joint contractures at birth. Greater movements in the trunk and pelvis during walking have been observed in children with AMC using orthoses compared to those wearing only shoes. This study investigated gait dynamics in children with AMC and identified compensatory mechanisms that accommodate walking.
METHODS: Twenty-six children with AMC who walked with orthoses or shoes and a control group consisting of 37 typically-developing children were evaluated in 3D gait analysis. Children with

Arthrogryposis multiplex congenita (AMC) is a rare disease with multiple joint contractures. It is widely believed that bilaterally dislocated hips should not be reduced since movement is satisfactory and open reduction has had poor results. Since 1977 we have performed a new method of open reduction using an extensive anterolateral approach on ten hips in five children with AMC. The mean age at surgery was 31.5 months (17 to 64) and the mean follow-up was 11.8 years (3.8 to 19.5). At the final follow-up all children walked without crutches or canes. Two managed independently, one required a l

Orthopedic deformities in the lower limb concern all joints (hip, knee, ankle, foot) with a wide range of clinical forms. Spasticity, contracture, stiffness, laxity, neurological deficit are assessed to establish the surgical procedure. Surgical techniques are adapted to the goals that are detailed with the patient and his family: standing, transferring, walking, hygiene, devices (shoes, orthosis, canes, wheelchair). Surgical procedures can associate: lengthening of contractured muscles (tenotomy with or without sutures, fractional lengthening at the musculo-tendinous junction or desinsertion)

In M. Perthes a progressive deformation and flattening of the epiphysis is caused by the stress in the hip. In the beginning stages a varisation osteotomie gives a sufficient reduction of the joint pressure and a modelling of the enlarged head by the acetabulum is possible. In later stages a detoriation of the head deformity with fixed adduction contracture can be caused by varisation osteotomie. Enlarging the acetabulum laterally and ventrally and medializing the hip-joint by means of a Chiari pelvic-osteotomy reduces the joint pressure so far, that a restitution of the hip joint with round a

INTRODUCTION: Total hip arthroplasty in patients with high hip dislocation is a surgically demanding procedure. This is due to the congenital disorder of hip maturation and the resulting anatomical features. The aim of the arthroplasty is implantation of the cup prosthesis in the original centre of rotation, at the same time correcting femoral deformities and reducing the hip joint.
INDICATIONS: The indications include advanced osteoarthritis in the secondary acetabulum, existing instability, severe contractures and secondary changes in adjacent joints.
CONTRAINDICATIONS: The contraindicatio

Ohdo syndrome Say-Barver-Biesecker-Young-Simpson (SBBYS) variant is a rare autosomal dominant disorder characterized mainly by intellectual disability, developmental delays, contractures of the knees and hips contractures, thyroid dysfunction, and dysmorphic appearance. The Ohdo syndrome SBBYS variant is caused by heterozygous loss of function mutation in the KAT6B gene. The peripheral blood mononuclear cells from a patient carrying heterozygous frameshift mutation of the KAT6B gene were reprogrammed using the CytoTune-iPS2.0 Sendai Reprogramming Kit. The mutation in the KAT6B gene causes the

An 18-month-old girl with hereditary hyaline fibromatosis syndrome (HHFS) and fixed flexion contractures presented with an oblique femur fracture, following a fall out of her mother's arms. The fracture was abutting intramedullary hyaline lesions. Due to her condition, balanced traction was impossible to apply. The authors report effective treatment of her injury using a non-operative approach in an early hip spica, over a 4-week period. There was no evidence of delayed osseous healing. Early spica application could be used as a definitive management option in children with femur fractures and

The whistling face syndrome has been reported, with complications of the respiratory system and feeding problems due to microstomia, since 1938. Dysphagia, however, has not previously been reported as a complication of whistling face syndrome. We report a 13-year-old with the whistling face syndrome and dysphagia of late onset who has the typical whistling face, scoliosis and multiple joint contractures. Dysphagia occurred as a result of compression at the cervicomedullary junction by a cranio-vertebral junction malformation and impingement by the tip of the odontoid process. This child had un

Coxitis with rapid hip chondrolysis in juvenile patients requires careful diagnosis and treatment. This report describes a case that was initially diagnosed as idiopathic hip chondrolysis but finally diagnosed as enthesis-related juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA). Case: A 15-year-old boy complained of bilateral hip pain and difficulty in walking. Initially, a diagnosis of idiopathic hip chondrolysis was made based on the imaging findings of centralised joint space narrowing on plain radiography and high-signal areas in the femoral head and acetabulum on T2-weighted fat-suppressed magnetic re

This case report concerns a 49-year-old woman whose physical examination was remarkable for symmetrical swollen hands, fingers and palmar fascial thickening with erythema. The fingers showed flexion contractures. Examination also revealed markedly limited bilateral shoulder and limited knee flexion. The patient's symptoms were treated with rehabilitation. The immunological laboratory investigations were normal. A technetium scan showed a slightly increased uptake in both shoulders, wrists, hips, knees and ankles. CT revealed a pelvic solid mass next to the uterus. After the patient underwent a
