Knee surgery, sports traumatology, arthroscopy : official journal of the ESSKA2017eng
PURPOSE: Hip arthroscopy is emerging as the standard of care for conditions involving the hip, and has a unique set of complications. The purpose of this review was to identify (1) the crude rate of pudendal nerve injury following hip arthroscopy and (2) the specific factors leading to pudendal nerve injury.
METHODS: MEDLINE, EMBASE, and PubMed were searched from database inception to October 2016. Patient demographics, indications, surgical technique, complication rates, treatment approaches, and rehabilitation strategies were extracted.
RESULTS: Twenty-four studies (n = 3405) were included

Treatment of chronic peripheral ischemic wounds in patients with spinal cord injury (SCI) can be technically challenging, especially if they have significant hip contracture. This article describes the endovascular aortoiliac revascularization of a paraplegic patient with hip contracture and a hostile abdomen. It also reviews the particularity of the peripheral arterial system in SCI patients.

Vascular injuries are a rare complication of total hip arthroplasty (THA). We describe the case of 71-year-old man who underwent an elective left THA and developed a pseudoaneurysm from an avulsion injury to the first branch of the profunda femoris artery. The patient underwent urgent open primary repair of the pseudoaneurysm and recovered without any complications. This case demonstrates the importance of assessing for vascular injuries after THA and of educating patients about the associated signs and symptoms.

BACKGROUND: Adequate hip range of motion is required for the transfer of energy from the lower to the upper extremity along the kinetic chain. Repetitive rotational stresses in the lower extremities during tennis may lead to sport-specific range of motion adaptations, which may increase the risk of injury to other joints along the kinetic chain.
PURPOSE: To assess whether such range of motion adaptations occur in the hip, and if so, to identify whether they are associated with injury.
STUDY DESIGN: Cross-sectional study; Level of evidence, 3.
METHODS: A total of 125 female professional tenn

Vascular injury is a rare but devastating complication of total hip arthroplasty. We present 2 cases of external iliac artery injury that complicated the removal of a chronically infected total hip arthroplasty where the acetabular component had migrated medial to Kohler's line. In both cases, hemostasis and reperfusion were achieved with the assistance of a vascular surgeon. This report describes the diagnosis, treatment, and associated risk factors for this rare complication. The combination of deep infection and medial migration of the acetabular component represents a high-risk situation f

Bone mineral density of the lumbar spine and right hip was measured with dual x-ray absorptiometry in 14 men with chronic spinal cord injury (SCI). The pattern of demineralization was compared to that observed in 46 men with a variety of endocrine disorders (chronic steroid use seven, chronic neuroleptic use 15, prolactinoma three, hypogonadism six, hyperthyroidism three, idiopathic osteoporosis 12). The SCI patients had significant hip demineralization but normal bone density in the lumbar spine (percent of age-matched normal 86.0 +/- 3.8 for the femoral neck, 101.8 +/- 4.3 for the lumbar spi

CONTEXT: Return to play (RTP) following hip and groin injuries in soccer remains a complex and high-stakes component of athlete management. These injuries account for a substantial proportion of time-loss episodes and are characterized by high recurrence rates and variable recovery timelines. Despite their prevalence, there is currently no standardized or validated framework for RTP decision making, and applied criteria vary considerably across clinical and sport-performance settings.
OBJECTIVES: To identify, categorize, and synthesize the criteria used to guide RTP decisions following hip an

CASE: A 43-year-old man suffered household electric shock from 220 V alternating current when he accidently touched a live wire with his left hand. Subsequently, he was diagnosed to have osteonecrosis of the left femoral head and underwent total hip arthroplasty.
CONCLUSION: We suggest that the electric current could have thrombosed the terminal subsynovial vessels of the femoral head, leading to osteonecrosis. To the best of authors' knowledge, only 2 cases of osteonecrosis of the hip after electric shock have been reported in the literature. A literature review of the delayed consequences o

CONTEXT: Hip pain is a concern in young adults, with previous hip injury recognized as a key contributing factor. However, little is known about how prior non-hip lower extremity injuries impact current hip pain.
OBJECTIVES: To determine (1) whether past foot/ankle and knee youth sports injuries are associated with current hip pain in young adults and (2) the role of foot/ankle, knee, and hip pain in contributing to poor patient-reported lower extremity function in young adults.
DESIGN: Cross-sectional study.
SETTING: Electronic survey.

BACKGROUND: Shoulder and elbow injuries are major problems in baseball players. Tightness of the upper extremities has been reported as a risk factor for shoulder and elbow injuries in elementary and junior high school baseball players. However, few studies have been conducted on the relationship between decreased hip range of motion (ROM) and shoulder and elbow injuries.
PURPOSE/HYPOTHESIS: This study aimed to prospectively examine the relationship between hip ROM and throwing-related shoulder and elbow injuries in elementary and junior high school baseball players. The hypothesis was that p

Safety belts protect occupants in frontal impacts by reducing occupant deceleration and preventing the occupant from hitting interior vehicle components likely to cause injury. However, occupants moving forward during the impact may contact the safety belt webbing across their chest and abdomen. We hypothesized that if the occupant loaded their knee-thigh-hip (KTH) region with enough force to result in injury to this region-it might prevent compression (and injury) of their abdomen by the safety belt. Crash Injury Research and Engineering Network (CIREN) data were used to test the association

Questions remain about whether the increased risk of fractures in patients with type 2 diabetes (T2DM) is related mainly to increased risk of falling or to bone-specific properties. The primary aim of this study was to investigate the risk of hip fractures and non-skeletal fall injuries in older men and women with and without T2DM. We included 429,313 individuals (aged 80.8 ± 8.2 years [mean ± SD], 58% women) from the Swedish registry "Senior Alert" and linked the data to several nationwide registers. We identified 79,159 individuals with T2DM (45% with insulin [T2DM-I], 41% with oral antidiab

OBJECTIVE: To determine whether restrictions in hip external rotation (ER) or internal rotation (IR) range of motion (ROM) are related to overall injury risk in baseball players.
DATA SOURCES: Three databases were systematically searched from inception through September 2024 using the following keywords: hip, acetabular, acetabulum, pelvis, pelvic, and baseball.
STUDY SELECTION: Studies were included if the authors evaluated baseball players, assessed clinical hip measures, and related these measures to injury. Two independent reviewers screened 495 studies, with 17 meeting final inclusion c

INTRODUCTION: The elderly are prone to lung injury after hip fracture (HF), which is one of the major causes of death following HFs. Electroacupuncture (EA) has been reported to alleviate lung injury. This study was aimed to investigate the effects of EA on HF-induced acute lung injury and explore the underlying mechanisms.
METHODS: Mice were randomly divided into four groups: control, model, sham EA + HF, and EA + HF groups. An acute lung injury mouse model induced by unilateral closed HF was prepared by free drop of 500 g weights from a height of 15 cm along the axis to assess the effective

Dislocation of a hip hemiarthroplasty used to treat a hip fracture is a serious complication. The aim of this study was to identify whether a delay in the time from fracture to surgery causes an increase in the rate of post-operative hip dislocation. From a single center, data from intracapsular neck of femur patients treated with hip hemiarthroplasty was collected between October 1986 to August 2021. The time from both fall to surgery and admission to surgery was recorded. Surviving patients were followed up for one year. The overall dislocation rate was 51 out of 4155 patients (1.2%). The 30

BACKGROUND: Acute kidney injury (AKI) is associated with increased complications after total hip arthroplasty (THA) and total knee arthroplasty (TKA). The purpose of this study was to determine the risk factors for AKI after THA and TKA and evaluate if preoperative use of antihypertensive drugs is a risk factor for AKI.
METHODS: A retrospective review of 7406 primary TKAs and THAs (4532 hips and 2874 knees) from 2013 to 2019 was performed. The following preoperative variables were obtained from medical records: medications, chemistry 7 panel, Elixhauser comorbidities, and demographic factors.
