BACKGROUND: The precise positioning of the acetabular prosthesis in total hip arthroplasty is critical, as it directly influences articulation with the femoral head prosthesis, hip biomechanics, and functional recovery. However, the absence of reliable anatomical landmarks for intraoperative guidance remains a significant challenge in achieving optimal implant orientation. This study aims to provide a theoretical and experimental basis for improving the accuracy of prosthesis implantation and supporting anatomical acetabular reconstruction in clinical practice.
METHODS: From September 2018 to

BACKGROUND: While pseudoaneurysm is a rare complication following total hip arthroplasty (THA), subsequent prosthesis dislocation after embolization is even more exceptional. We report such a case and discuss the potential underlying mechanisms.
CASE PRESENTATION: We report the case of an 83-year-old woman who developed a right medial femoral circumflex artery pseudoaneurysm one month after THA, for which she underwent emergent transarterial embolization (TAE). One day after the procedure, she returned to the emergency department with a THA dislocation. Computed tomography (CT) imaging confir

INTRODUCTION: Total hip arthroplasty with traditional stem joints, although bringing many benefits to patients indicated for hip replacement, faces many difficulties in reoperations in young patients due to the limited lifespan of the artificial joint. Recently, the short-stem joint was introduced to help overcome this problem. This study aims to evaluate the results of short-stem implants for primary total hip arthroplasty in Vietnamese adults.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: The study design is retrospective longitudinal. The study subjects were 91 patients with aseptic necrosis of the femoral head

BACKGROUND: Valid comparisons of muscle strength between individuals or legs that differ in size requires normalization, often by simple anthropometric variables. Few studies of muscle strength in lower-limb prosthesis users have normalized strength data by any anthropometric variable, potentially confounding our understanding of strength deficits in lower-limb prosthesis users. The objective of this pilot study was to determine the need for as well as effectiveness and impact of normalizing hip strength in lower-limb prosthesis users.
METHODS: Peak isometric hip extension and abduction torqu

RATIONALE: A solution revision prosthesis has a multilayer microporous Porocoat coating, and the availability of multiple stem body sizes ensures that the prosthesis is adapted to each patient's anatomical structure so that there a firm attachment with the bone cortex in the middle of the femur. Therefore, the Solution prosthesis is one of the most commonly used and most effective prostheses in total hip arthroplasty worldwide.
PATIENT CONCERNS: We reported a case of a 54-year-old female patient with periprosthetic femoral fractures after hip arthroplasty.
DIAGNOSIS: The case was identified

A 62 years old woman 6 months after left total hip prosthesis referred to our institution for persistent pain and warm, stiff, and swollen joint. 18F-FDG CT/PET Images showed an intense focal uptake corresponding to the external margin of inter-trochanteric region of prosthesis and inside the stem inferiorly, but common decision was to reconstruct PET images without attenuation correction and now showed a complete and unexpected disappearance of focal and pathological FDG uptake. This case shows the potential propagation of CT artifacts into PET emission data close to metal implants and should

Clinical cases in mineral and bone metabolism : the official journal of the Italian Society of Osteoporosis, Mineral Metabolism, and Skeletal Diseases2013eng
BACKGROUND: Symptomatic severe osteoarthritis and hip osteoporotic fractures are the main conditions requiring total hip arthroplasty (THA), whereas total knee arthroplasty (TKA) is mainly performed for pain, disability or deformity due to osteoarthritis. After surgery, some patients suffer from "painful prosthesis", which currently represents a clinical problem.
METHODS: A systematic review of scientific literature has been performed. A panel of experts has examined the issue of persistent pain following total hip or knee arthroplasty, in order to characterize etiopathological mechanisms and

Periprosthetic bone changes following hip arthroplasty are yet to be completely described. The material consisted of imagistic records (X-ray films, CT and MRI scans) and of acetabular bone tissue sampled from 14 cases with femoral head prosthesis and revision of the prosthesis fixed and decalcified in Duboscq-Brazil solution and stained with Hematoxylin and Eosin, trichrome van Gieson and trichrome Masson. Acetabular bone is home of a great variety of morphological changes that can be divided in degenerative and regenerative changes seen in both compact and trabecular components but only insi

BACKGROUND: Theoretically, the motion of a bipolar hip prosthesis is most likely to occur at the inner joint if the frictional coefficients are equal at both surfaces. However, many studies have suggested that most motion occurs at the outer joint.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: We performed an analysis of motion in a cadaveric bone model and in 50 patients during fluoroscopic examination, to determine how the motion is distributed between the two joints and what factors contribute to this distribution.
RESULTS: The motion distributions varied widely between the patients. However, there was a relativ

Bone reactions were studied around a titanium, hydroxyapatite (HA)-coated Osteonics (Allendale, NJ) bipolar hip prosthesis, which was revised for severe midthigh pain 4 years after implantation. Inspection of the retrieved prosthesis using a dissecting microscope revealed scarce remnants of a coating-like material on the surface of the prosthesis; however, histology of this layer and histology of the bony side of the bone--HA interface failed to reveal any remnants of an HA coating. The interface was covered predominantly by trabecular bone, which closely followed the contour of the prosthesis

The authors present Voorhoeve's net, which is used for the management of dislodgements of total hip prostheses complicated by the lysis of the calcar. They report on the middle- and long-term results in a series of 65 second operations for aseptic dislodgement in which the incidence of lysis was 64%. The biomechanical study of the net, which was carried out according to the finite element method and coupled with experimental measurements, demonstrates the effectiveness of the net for longitudinal and radial stress. Their conclusion is that the net is a good addition to the management of dislod

The first clinical results of the Lindenhof ceramic-metal composite prosthesis implanted in our hospital in Freiburg are presented. We observed that same favorable early results as the conventional prostheses in a correct position. The implants are incorporated into the bone within 8-12 weeks. The radiographic films show the adaptation of the supporting bone around the ceramic socket. We explain the failures due to our initial lack of technical experience and/or anatomical deformation of the pelvic bone. complications caused by the post-operative treatment during the 12 weeks following surgery

We present a case of split and partially entwined sciatic nerve by a femoral prosthesis following closed reduction of a dislocated hip replacement. This complication is very rare and there are only few cases reported in the literature, with even less accompanied by supporting MRI. We present MRI features of a split and partially entwined sciatic nerve around a hip prosthesis.

BACKGROUND The case of a patient with bilateral renal cancers diagnosed at 94 and 120 months after metal-on-metal hip placement may serve as a warning. It suggests that there may be a need for kidney echography observation of patients with similar types of prostheses. CASE REPORT A 61-year-old woman received a metal-on-metal hip prosthesis for degenerative arthritis in January 2007. In November 2014, after bleeding from the renal tract, she was diagnosed with clear cell carcinoma of the right kidney. When she returned to her orthopaedic surgeon 1 year later, a blood test showed a serum cobalt

Fractures of modern cementless stems are almost extinct. However, extra small stems used for cases of developmental dysplasia of the hip (DDH) are still at risk for this complication. We review the fracture of a small size 11, custom-made Wagner cone prosthesis in a 70 year old female patient. The patient had a body-mass index (BMI) of 22.2, 7 yrs after undergoing a total hip arthroplasty. The procedure was undertaken to correct extreme high-riding congenital hip dysplasia. She presented with sudden pain due to a non-traumatic fracture of the stem, just below the proximal third region. At revi

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the short-term effectiveness of total hip arthroplasty (THA) with SL-PLUS MIA femoral stem prosthesis by comparing with the SL-PLUS prosthesis.
METHODS: Retrospective analysis was made on the clinical data of 33 patients (38 hips) undergoing THA with SL-PLUS MIA femoral stem prosthesis (trial group) between June and December 2011, which was compared with those of 35 patients (40 hips) with SL-PLUS prosthesis (control group) during the same period. There was no significant difference in gender, age, disease duration, etiology, preoperative range of motion (ROM) of hip

The fully porous structure of the Lübeck prosthesis is designed to closely resemble cancellous bone. Several studies have reported 'good' to 'excellent' mid- to long-term results for use of the Lübeck, but stem fractures have been reported as a complication. We report on the case of an 85-year-old patient who underwent total hip arthroplasty (THA) using the Lübeck more than 25 years ago who underwent revision surgery for management of two periprosthetic femoral fractures and a stem fracture. A subtrochanteric fracture and a fracture of the stem were observed on radiographs, and a radiolucent l

Background: Sitting and standing with conventional hip-knee-ankle-foot (HKAF) prostheses are demanding tasks for hip disarticulation (HD) amputees due to the passive nature of current prosthetic hip joints that cannot assist with moment generation. This study developed a sitting and standing control strategy for a motorized hip joint and evaluated whether providing active assistance reduces the intact side demand of these activities. Methods: A dedicated control strategy was developed and implemented for a motorized hip prosthesis (Power Hip) compatible with existing prosthetic knees, feet, an
