Intimate Partner Violence and Well-Being Among Indigenous Women: The Impact of Social Reactions on Trauma and Mental Health.

Intimate partner violence (IPV) is a pervasive public health crisis, defined by physical, sexual, or psychological harm by a current or former partner. Indigenous women are disproportionately affected by IPV due to the overlapping effects of colonization, historical trauma, systemic inequality, and barriers to support. These experiences can contribute to a range of adverse mental health outcomes. Importantly, how others respond to survivors' disclosures can shape their recovery and psychological well-being. This study examined the relationship between social reactions to IPV disclosure and men

The role of migration processes and cultural factors in the classification of personality disorders.

Migrants and ethnic minorities are at risk of being under- and overdiagnosed with personality disorders (PDs). A culturally informed approach to the classification of PDs guides clinicians in incorporating migration processes and cultural factors, to arrive at a reliable and valid assessment of personality pathology. In this article, we provide a tentative framework to highlight specific interactions between personality disorders, migration processes, and cultural factors. It is argued that migration processes can merely resemble personality pathology, activate certain (latent) vulnerabilities

Frequency of intra-abdominal injury in cases of blunt trauma to the cervical spinal cord.

Historically, early management of the blunt trauma victim with hemodynamic instability and cervical spinal cord injury has been hampered by the physician's inability to perform an accurate physical examination. Invasive and time-consuming diagnostic tests are often run to check for the presence of occult intra-abdominal injuries. For this reason, we decided to study these patients by reviewing a clinical registry to assess the frequency of intra-abdominal injuries in cases of cervical spinal cord trauma. We hypothesized that intra-abdominal injury would occur infrequently in cases of blunt tra

Psilocybin and MDMA for the treatment of trauma-related psychopathology.

This review examines the role of trauma in psychiatric morbidity and analogous psychoneurobiological changes. Trauma is a necessary criterion for Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), however, trauma history is highly correlated with a variety of psychiatric conditions. Some evidence suggests that Major Depressive Disorder (MDD) is the most common psychiatric condition that arises following trauma. Approximately 50% of PTSD cases present with co-morbid MDD. Overlapping symptomatology and neurobiology between these conditions underlie the debate over whether these phenomena result from problem

Mental Health Needs of Asian American Older Adults: Bridging the Inequity Gap.

The mental health needs of Asian American older adults are complex and multifaceted. Despite their rich diversity, Asian American older adults face significant challenges, including mental health stigma, cultural stress, limited English proficiency, and historical trauma. In addition, the coronavirus disease 2019 pandemic reignited preexisting anti-Asian attitudes of hostility, discrimination, blame, and scapegoating. The historical context of Asian immigration to the United States, impact of race-based discrimination, and recent resurgence of anti-Asian hate crimes impact mental health in Asi

Non-Indigenous Canadians' and Americans' moral expectations of Indigenous peoples in light of the negative impacts of the Indian Residential Schools.

The historical trauma associated with the Indian Residential School (IRS) system was recently brought to the awareness of the Canadian public. Two studies investigated how the salience of this collective victimization impacted non-Indigenous Canadians' expectations that Indigenous peoples ought to derive psychological benefits (e.g., learned to appreciate life) and be morally obligated to help others. Study 1 found that modern racism was related to perceptions that Indigenous peoples psychologically benefitted from the IRS experience, which in turn, predicted greater expectations of moral obli

Epidemiological profile of patients undergoing non-operative management of solid organ injury and associated factors with mortality.

INTRODUCTION: Trauma primarily affects the economically active population, causing social and economic impact. The non-operative management of solid organ injuries aims to preserve organ function, reducing the morbidity and mortality associated with surgical interventions. The aim of study was to demonstrate the epidemiological profile of patients undergoing non-operative management in a trauma hospital and to evaluate factors associated with mortality in these patients. METHODS: This is a historical cohort of patients undergoing non-operative management for solid organ injuries at a Brazilia

Evidence-Based Medicine for Mandible Fracture Repair: Current Controversies and Future Opportunities.

Mandibular fractures are among the most common facial fractures resulting from trauma. The nature of the injury, involved facial structures, presence of associated injuries, the dental status of the patient, comorbid conditions, and psychosocial context all must be considered by the surgeon when planning the optimal treatment for these patients. While consensus exists for many aspects of the management of mandibular trauma, some elements remain controversial. Three such topics-antibiotic therapy, treatment of subcondylar fractures, and management of the third molar-remain particularly controve

Social Networks, Cultural Pride, and Historical Loss Among Non-Reservation American Indian / Alaska Native Emerging Adults.

Health disparities among American Indian/Alaska Native (AI/AN) populations in the United States are the result of historical traumas, such as colonization, forced relocation, and federal policies focused on cultural assimilation. Culturally-tailored health interventions aim to address intergenerational trauma by emphasizing cultural strengths and building positive social connections. In this article, we explore the social network characteristics of participants of the first culturally-tailored health intervention for AI/AN emerging adults (18-25) living outside of tribal lands. Participants (N

Plastic surgical operative workload in major trauma patients following establishment of the major trauma network in England: A retrospective cohort study.

INTRODUCTION: The introduction of major trauma centres (MTCs) in England has led to 63% reduction in trauma mortality.(1) The role of plastic surgeons supporting these centres has not been quantified previously. This study aimed to quantify plastic surgical workload at an urban MTC to determine the contribution of plastic surgeons to major trauma care. METHODS: All Trauma Audit and Research Network (TARN)-recorded major trauma patients who presented to an urban MTC in 2013 and underwent an operation were identified retrospectively. Patients who underwent plastic surgery were identified and th

Transection of the thoracic aorta: current treatment obstacles.

A 19-year-old female driver involved in a head on collision suffered a transection of her thoracic aorta secondary to blunt trauma. She was transported to the trauma center where a chest x-ray showed a widened mediastinum. IV contrast enhanced CT of the chest showed extravasation of contrast medium into the mediastinum. She was taken to the operating room for immediate and successful open surgical repair. Historically open repair of aortic transaction was the mainstay of treatment. Currently thoracic endovascular aortic repair (TEVAR) may be a preferable method at many institutions. However th

Understanding trauma as a system of psycho-social harm: Contributions from the Australian royal commission into child sex abuse.

This article examines how particular understandings of trauma as a systemic form of psychosocial harm framed the establishment of the Australian Royal Commission into Institutional Responses to Child Sexual Abuse, informed its successful investigatory process, and shaped its recommendations and outcomes. In so doing, the Royal Commission makes an important contribution to the field of trauma studies, which has been characterized by contested histories and is subject to continuing debate in clinical and academic research. For much of the twentieth century, trauma and its impacts have been typic

Traumatic stress in the South Asian diaspora: A narrative review.

The South Asian diaspora is one of the largest racial/ethnic diasporas in the world. Limited psychological research and practice have focused on the traumatic experiences of South Asian individuals in this diaspora, and even less work has examined how these traumatic experiences are inextricably linked with historical and ongoing colonial context; migration and displacement; and intersectional identity based on religion, race, gender, nationality, and more. Additionally, scant research has focused on tangible solutions to these grave gaps in mental health care-how to best disseminate and imple

Posttraumatic stress disorder and older women.

This article examines the literature related to the identification and treatment of post traumatic stress disorder in older women. From this review, several key findings emerge. Consistent in the research literature is the fact that American women are more at risk for PTSD than are men as a result of the high frequency of sexual and domestic physical abuse that women experience. Studies on older women and PTSD indicate that older women are underdiagnosed and are more typically perceived as suffering from depression, anxiety or poor physical health. It was found consistently that older women wh

Childhood origins of self-destructive behavior.

OBJECTIVE: Clinical reports suggest that many adults who engage in self-destructive behavior have childhood histories of trauma and disrupted parental care. This study explored the relations between childhood trauma, disrupted attachment, and self-destruction, using both historical and prospective data. METHOD: Seventy-four subjects with personality disorders or bipolar II disorder were followed for an average of 4 years and monitored for self-destructive behavior such as suicide attempts, self-injury, and eating disorders. These behaviors were then correlated with independently obtained self

Cardiovascular Disease Risk Factors in the Native American Population.

Native Americans are disproportionately affected by cardiovascular disease in comparison with other racial and ethnic groups in the United States. Previous research has analyzed risk factors, quantified prevalence rates, and examined outcomes of cardiovascular disease in Native Americans, yet few studies have considered the role of societal and psychological factors on the increased burden of cardiovascular disease in Native Americans. Modifiable risk factors for cardiovascular disease, including poor nutrition, reduced physical activity, obesity, and increased substance use, are exacerbated i

Acanthamoeba sclerokeratitis. Determining diagnostic criteria.

Acanthamoeba infection of the cornea is an entity now recognized with increasing frequency. We saw two cases of Acanthamoeba sclerokeratitis in contact lens wearers in whom scleritis (anterior and posterior) played a central role in the clinical course of the disease. Scleritis is probably a more common component of Acanthamoeba infection than has generally been acknowledged. Posterior scleritis has not, to our knowledge, been reported previously in this disorder. The clinical diagnosis of Acanthamoeba infection has often been missed due to lack of a definition of the historical and clinical c

Sleep Disturbances Among Yazidi Survivors of the ISIS Genocide: Epidemiology, Neuropsychology, and Culturally Sensitive Interventions.

The Yazidi community endured an unprecedented genocide by the Islamic State (ISIS) in August 2014, resulting in mass killings, kinocide, abductions, ongoing disappearances, and sexual enslavement. The intense trauma led to high prevalence rates of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), depression, anxiety, and profound sleep disturbances. This comprehensive article integrates epidemiological data, neurobiological mechanisms, and clinical case reports to elucidate sleep disorders among Yazidi survivors. We detail the historical context, transgenerational trauma, specific sleep-related pathologie
