Hoarding frequently occurs in obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), and some evidence suggests that it constitutes a distinct OCD subtype, with genetic contributions. This study investigated differences between OCD patients with and without hoarding symptoms. Of the 473 OCD patients studied, 24% were classified as hoarders according to combined interviewer and self-ratings, which were validated with the Savings Inventory-Revised in a subsample. Hoarders suffered from significantly more severe OCD symptoms, (especially compulsions) and had greater impairment and dysphoria. Hoarders also had more

Hoarding disorder (HD) is a debilitating neuropsychiatric condition that affects 2%-6% of the population and increases in incidence with age. Major depressive disorder (MDD) co-occurs with HD in approximately 50% of cases and leads to increased functional impairment and disability. However, only one study to date has examined the rate and trajectory of hoarding symptoms in older individuals with a lifetime history of MDD, including those with current active depression (late-life depression; LLD). We therefore sought to characterize this potentially distinct phenotype. We determined the inciden

This study examined the function of hoarding behaviors and the relations between hoarding and a series of cognitive and affective processes in the moment using ecological momentary assessment. A matched-groups design was used to compare college students with higher hoarding symptoms (n = 31) and matched controls (n = 29). The two groups did not differ in what function they reported acquiring served, and positive automatic reinforcement was the most commonly reported function in both groups. Engaging in hoarding-relevant behaviors did not predict change in positive or negative affect when contr

Hoarding disorder (HD), a new DSM-5 classification, is characterized by difficulty discarding and the excessive acquisition of possessions to the extent that living spaces are compromised by clutter. Individuals with hoarding difficulties have a variety of motivations for object ownership, including emotional attachment towards their possessions which sometimes manifests through imbuing possessions with human-like terms. Limited extant evidence suggests that anthropomorphism, attributing human qualities to non-human objects, is related to hoarding, possibly because of difficulties with interpe

Hoarding disorder (HD) is characterized primarily by difficulty discarding possessions, leading to severe clutter and significant distress and impairment. Although promising psychological treatments have emerged, treating HD remains a clinical challenge. A greater understanding of the role of psychological vulnerability factors in predicting hoarding symptoms in a clinical HD sample could further enhance treatments. To investigate the role of proposed individual difference factors (i.e., distress tolerance, anxiety sensitivity, intolerance of uncertainty), we administered a diagnostic and self

OBJECTIVE: Recent evidence suggests that avoiding waste may be a prominent motive to save in hoarding disorder. Such beliefs are reminiscent of scrupulosity obsessions in OCD. This paper reports on three studies examining scrupulosity-like beliefs in hoarding and the development and validation of a measure of material scrupulosity.
METHODS: Study one examined the reliability and validity of a measure of material scrupulosity (MOMS) and its relationship to hoarding in a college student sample, as well as the relationship between hoarding and OCD-base scrupulosity. Study 2 examined the psychome

Hoarding behavior associated with focal brain injury is rarely reported. The authors report a 46-year-old man with pathologic collecting behavior after a left orbitofrontal and caudate injury from an aneurysmal rupture of anterior communicating artery. His hoarding, an impulse control disorder or an ego-syntonic compulsion, was restricted to one specific item (toy bullet). Treatments with sertraline or fluoxetine were not effective for the hoarding.

BACKGROUND: Time-limited group cognitive behavioral treatments (GCBT) for obsessive-compulsive disorder have demonstrated improvement in target symptoms. One small sample study of GCBT specifically for hoarding problems also showed benefit. This study examines the efficacy of a specialized GCBT for compulsive hoarding on a larger sample.
METHODS: Thirty-two clients diagnosed with hoarding participated in five groups. Four groups met once weekly for 2 hour over 16 weeks (n=27) and one group met for 20 weeks (n=5). All participants had two individual 90-min home sessions. Self-report assessment

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: The appetitive aspects of hoarding disorder, such as the compulsive acquisition and saving of objects, are akin to other behavioral addictions. Underpinning these appetitive features is the strong emotional and sentimental attachments that hoarding sufferers have for their possessions. Different facets of object attachment have been identified including anthropomorphism, insecure object attachment, possessions as an extension of identity, possessions as a repository of autobiographical memories, and possessions as a source of comfort and safety. The aim of this study was t

BACKGROUND: Hoarding disorder presents significant individual and interpersonal consequences. Because hoarding has only recently been added to the DSM, relatively little is known about associated comorbidity patterns. Several researchers have postulated a relationship between hoarding and schizotypy. To date, however, no investigations have considered which specific types of schizotypal traits relate to hoarding symptoms.
METHODS: We examined the association between hoarding and schizotypal symptoms using multivariate analyses in two samples-a sample of 120 young adults and a community sample

A group of patients with compulsive hoarding (n=30) was compared to a mixed clinical group (n=30) and a nonclinical community group (n=30) on laboratory tests of information-processing features hypothesized to be central to hoarding (memory, attention, and decision-making). Hoarding patients demonstrated slower and more variable reaction time, increased impulsivity, greater difficulty distinguishing targets and nontargets, and worse spatial attention relative to comparison groups. Multiple regression analyses demonstrated that slower reaction time and increased impulsivity were significantly r

Despite growing interest in the link between sleep disturbance and psychopathology, much remains unknown regarding obsessive-compulsive and related disorders (OCRDs). The present review integrates contemporary research on the relations between sleep and OCRDs, including hoarding disorder, trichotillomania, and excoriation disorder in order to inform future programmatic research. Findings indicate a robust link between sleep disturbance and OCD; however, the impact of sleep on OCD treatment outcome is unclear. Extant work on sleep disturbance in hoarding disorder indicates a relationship indepe

OBJECTIVES: Compulsive hoarding is a debilitating, chronic disorder, yet we know little about its onset, clinical features, or course throughout the life span. Hoarding symptoms often come to clinical attention when patients are in late life, and case reports of elderly hoarders abound. Yet no prior study has examined whether elderly compulsive hoarders have early or late onset of hoarding symptoms, whether their hoarding symptoms are idiopathic or secondary to other conditions, or whether their symptoms are similar to compulsive hoarding symptoms seen in younger and middle-aged populations. This article reviews acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT) for anxiety disorders, obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), trichotillomania, excoriation disorder, hoarding, and body dysmorphic disorder (BDD). Measurement of psychological inflexibility and its relationship to pathology is reviewed. Outcome work in all disorders listed is reviewed with results supporting ACT for anxiety disorders, OCD, and trichotillomania, but there is limited evidence for excoriation disorder, hoarding, and BDD. Future research should focus on processes of change in addition to outcomes.

This study aimed to investigate the relationships between hoarding behaviors, autism characteristics, and demographic factors in adults diagnosed with high-functioning ASD (Autism Spectrum Disorder). A total of 112 adults, aged 18-35, with high-functioning ASD completed self-reported assessments on hoarding (Savings Inventory-Revised; SI-R) and autism traits (Autism-Spectrum Quotient; AQ). Additionally, demographic data was gathered. Correlation and regression analyses were performed. The findings revealed positive correlations between hoarding and overall autism traits. Autism quotient scores

This study describes 17 publicly available cases of animal hoarding, a special manifestation of hoarding disorder. The cases, which included court documents, animal service documents, photographs, and newspaper clippings, were reviewed by Masters-level clinicians and a veterinarian in private practice. The veterinarian rated the animals in the case files for possible neglect. Over half of the homes had signs of object hoarding. The most commonly hoarded animals were cats, dogs, and rabbits. The majority of animals in the cases reviewed required veterinary care. Individuals with animal hoarding

Objective: Hoarding disorder is a chronic and progressive psychiatric disorder that often begins in adolescence and early adulthood. The purpose of this study was to investigate the impact of hoarding severity on college students' psychosocial functioning and possible methods of early intervention. Participants: Undergraduate students (N = 363) at a large public university in the United States. Methods: Participants completed a self-report battery that included their parental history of clutter, perceptions about possible interventions for clutter, and standardized measures of hoarding severit

This article is an attempt at a psychoanalytic understanding of Diogenes syndrome, or hoarding disorder syndrome, by way of a clinical case. This syndrome is characterized by a failure to attend to proper housing habits, including the hoarding of rubbish that may, in fact, create unsuitable, even dangerous, living conditions. The clinical case used suggests that Diogenes syndrome or hoarding disorder reflects or indicates an extreme form of obsessive neurosis involving libidinal regressions to anal fixations designed, paradoxically, to satisfy both a passion for dirty and for order. However, t

OBJECTIVES: Individuals with hoarding disorder are more likely to be overweight or obese than the general population for unknown reasons.
METHODS: One hundred and twenty-nine individuals (Hoarding Group: n = 63; Control Group: n = 66) completed self-report measures and were offered snacks in a tidy and a cluttered environment in a counterbalanced order. Groups were based on the self-reporting of high or low hoarding symptoms.
RESULTS: The hoarding group reported being less able to use their kitchen and prepare food at home and experiencing more impulsivity, distress intolerance and problemat

OBJECTIVE: Although hoarding symptoms are chronic and the average onset is late adolescence, younger cohorts have received little attention in research. Given the insidious symptom trajectory of hoarding and the unsatisfactory treatment outcomes in clinical groups, comprehensive research focusing on younger participants may reveal insights and suggest early intervention opportunities.
DESIGN: Cross-sectional data were collected online from an emerging adult sample.
METHOD: A total of 316 participants (aged 18-25) reported on hoarding symptoms, executive functioning, attention deficit/hyperac
