The association between experiencing homelessness in childhood or youth and adult housing stability in Housing First.

BACKGROUND: Researchers have pointed out the paucity of research investigating long-term consequences of experiencing homelessness in childhood or youth. Limited research has indicated that the experience of homelessness in childhood or youth is associated with adverse adjustment-related consequences in adulthood. Housing First (HF) has acknowledged effectiveness in improving housing outcomes among adults experiencing homelessness and living with serious mental illness, although some HF clients struggle with maintaining housing. The current study was conducted to examine whether the experience

Birth Control Access and Selection among Youths Experiencing Homelessness in the United States: A Review.

Youths experiencing homelessness (YEH) become pregnant at five times the general population rate. Education, social, and health care systems struggle to adequately address this young community's sexual and reproductive health needs, yet social workers are well positioned across sectors to address their sexual and reproductive health and well-being. A growing body of literature exists on the factors affecting YEH's access and selection of birth control, prompting the present review that aimed to understand this process and inform better attuned sexual and reproductive health approaches. Using a

Individual and Social Network Correlates of Sexual Health Communication Among Youth Experiencing Homelessness.

Despite the potential for sexual health communication to be leveraged for HIV prevention among youth experiencing homelessness (YEH), there has yet to be a rigorous examination of individual and network or relational characteristics associated with sexual health communication in this group of young people. Cross-sectional survey and social network data from 1014 YEH aged 14-25 recruited in Los Angeles, California, were utilized to assess individual and network or relational characteristics associated with communication regarding condom use and HIV testing among YEH. Results suggest that social

Homelessness youth and mental health service utilization: A long-term follow-up study.

BACKGROUND: There is currently an incomplete picture of the long-term impact of homelessness on youth with mental health issues. There are also questions regarding homelessness as a predictor of mental health re-admissions. AIMS: To examine the mental health service presentation profile of young people affected by homelessness and mental health issues. METHODS: A retrospective analysis was conducted of the medical records of homeless (n = 29) and non-homeless (n = 32) youth who attended the YouthLink specialist mental health service in 2010. We tracked their pattern of mental health service

On the fringes: How youth experiencing homelessness conceptualize social and economic inequality-A Photovoice study.

This study used Photovoice methods with young adults experiencing homelessness to collaboratively identify issues that are of greatest importance in an open-ended, exploratory, and inductive manner. Participants selected two concepts to focus their inquiry: freedom and prosperity. Within these concepts, participants discussed nature as a source of inspiration, a desire to better themselves and to change their situations, and passion for contributing to social change by exposing economic inequality and raising awareness about homelessness. These findings demonstrate that young people are keenly

Causes of Child and Youth Homelessness in Developed and Developing Countries: A Systematic Review and Meta-analysis.

IMPORTANCE: A systematic compilation of children and youth's reported reasons for street involvement is lacking. Without empirical data on these reasons, the policies developed or implemented to mitigate street involvement are not responsive to the needs of these children and youth. OBJECTIVE: To systematically analyze the self-reported reasons why children and youth around the world become street-involved and to analyze the available data by level of human development, geographic region, and sex. DATA SOURCES: Electronic searches of Scopus, PsychINFO, EMBASE, POPLINE, PubMed, ERIC, and the

Depressive Symptoms and their Association With Adverse Environmental Factors and Substance Use in Runaway and Homeless Youths.

We used diathesis-stress and stress-sensitization models to determine whether family maltreatment, street-related traumatic events, stressful life events, and substance use were associated with depressive symptoms in runaway and homeless youths (RHY) in Los Angeles. Greater severity of depressive symptoms was significantly related to family maltreatment, being exposed to more traumatic stressors during homelessness, and current substance use compared to no substance use. Family maltreatment was also found to moderate the relationship between traumatic stressors and depressive symptoms. Importa

Explaining homeless youths' criminal justice interactions: childhood trauma or surviving life on the streets?

Homeless youth are at increased risk for involvement in the criminal justice system. This study investigated childhood trauma as a risk factor for arrest or jail among a sample of youth seeking services at drop in, shelter, and transitional housing settings, while controlling for more established risk factors including: substance use, peer deviance, and engagement in survival behaviors. Standardized and researcher developed measures collected quantitative data through face-to-face interviews with youth (N = 202). Two sequential logic regression models identified significant predictors of arres

Prevalence and characteristics of sex trafficking among youth experiencing homelessness: A cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Youth experiencing homelessness (YEH) face elevated risk for sex trafficking due to interconnecting structural, interpersonal, and psychological vulnerabilities. Despite growing recognition of this link, regional data from the southern United States remain limited. This study examines the proportion of YEH reporting experiences consistent with sex trafficking and describes associated characteristics among a sample of YEH in Houston, TX. METHODS: Baseline data (September 2019-May 2023) from a randomized controlled trial of a nurse-led HIV prevention intervention were analyzed. Part

Youth experiencing homelessness at risk for suicide: psychosocial risk factors and service use patterns.

OBJECTIVE: Young adults experiencing homelessness often suffer from adverse mental health outcomes and suicide is a leading cause of death. The objective of this study is to examine service use and psychosocial risk factors for suicide, in relation to suicide risk assessment, to inform strategies for engaging youth in suicide prevention services. METHODS: A cross-sectional analysis of youth enrolled in a supportive housing randomized clinical trial. We categorized suicide risk into three groups (low-, moderate-, and high-risk) based on suicidal ideation and past-year suicide attempt. The serv

PrEP Engagement in a Sample of Youth Experiencing Homelessness in New York City: A Brief Report.

Few studies have examined pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) engagement among youth experiencing homelessness (YEH), despite high HIV risk. We collected data using a cross-sectional survey from YEH ages 16-24 in New York City (NYC). We assessed YEH awareness, willingness to use, and plans to take PrEP. We conducted primarily descriptive and bivariate analyses for this brief report and found that 49 (48%) identified as LGBTQ + and 74 (66%) reported food insecurity. The majority of our sample (69%) reported health insurance coverage. In total, 55 (45%) had heard of PrEP before the survey, 78 (73%)

Qualitative experiences with a suicide prevention intervention: voices from advocates and youth experiencing homelessness.

Suicide is a leading cause of death among youth experiencing homelessness (YEH) and prevention interventions are needed for nontraditional settings. This study presents the adaptation of Cognitive Therapy for Suicide Prevention (CTSP) within a supportive housing randomized trial for YEH (18 to 24 years). CTSP was delivered by trained youth advocates in community settings. Both youth (n = 11) and advocates (n = 5) were interviewed and shared perspectives on acceptability and feasibility. Advocates felt CTSP was easy to implement and could be integrated into advocacy sessions. Despite initial di

Foster care policy and homelessness among youth transitioning to adulthood from foster care.

BACKGROUND: Youth aging out of foster care experience troubling rates of homelessness. OBJECTIVE: This study examines whether policies directed towards youth transitioning to adulthood from foster care, Extended Foster Care (EFC) and Supervised Independent Living Placements (SILPs), reduce the risk of homelessness. PARTICIPANTS AND SETTING: Participants were 595 youths aging out of foster care in California. METHODS: Data from interviews conducted with the youths, and state child welfare administrative data on their involvement with the child welfare system, were used to examine predictors

Suicidal Risk in Youth Experiencing Homelessness: Patterns Associated with Problem-Solving and Cognitive Distortions.

INTRODUCTION: Youth experiencing homelessness (YEH) exhibit depressive symptoms and suicidal ideation at much higher rates than the general population (Burke et al., 2022), with suicide the leading cause of mortality among YEH (Auerswald et al., 2016), likely due to a confluence of stressors (Budescu et al., 2021). To better prevent suicide, understanding factors associated with suicidal risk, such as cognitive distortions and problem-solving, has been a focus of prior research (Wilson et al., 2011). However, little is known about the relationship between these factors and suicidal risk among
