Previous Emergency Medical Services Use by Victims of Child Homicide.

INTRODUCTION: The medical diagnoses and frequency of emergency department visits made by children who are later given a diagnosis of maltreatment do not differ much from those of nonabused children. However, the type of medical complaints and frequency of emergency medical services (EMS) use by child homicide victims before their death are not known. We compared EMS use between child homicide victims and children who died from natural causes before their death. METHODS: This was a retrospective case-control study of children 0 to 5 years old who died in Houston, Texas, from 2005 to 2010. Case

Method of homicide and severe mental illness: A systematic review.

There is limited research that has examined offense characteristics in homicides committed by individuals with mental illness and with differing psychiatric diagnoses. The aim of this systematic review is to synthesize previous findings of studies analyzing homicide behavior by mentally ill individuals, and reporting any associations between mental illness and method of homicide. We searched four databases (MedLine, PsychINFO, Web of Science and Embase), and identified 52 relevant articles for analysis. Of these 52 articles, nine reported specific information on mental illness and method of ho

Elder homicide by unique combination of different mechanisms of asphyxia.

Elder homicide is a fatal outcome of elder abuse and neglect. Multifactorial homicidal asphyxia in an elderly man by combination of three different mechanisms is an uncommon incident. This following case demonstrates a very unusual murder of 74-year-old man in his own residence. Crime scene visit and postmortem examination revealed that the victim was killed by combined effect of ligature strangulation, traumatic asphyxia and smothering by plastic bag.

Multiple injuries in suicide simulating homicide: report of three cases.

Multiple inflicted injuries in traumatic deaths usually indicate homicide. Three cases are reported where homicide was initially suspected due to findings at the death scene and the apparent nature of the injuries however, after investigation, involvement of any other individuals in the deaths could be excluded. Case 1: A 52-year-old male was found with multiple stab wounds. At autopsy, 36 stab wounds were identified, the majority of which were superficial. Only two stab wounds had penetrated deeply. Case 2: A 19-year-old female was found with three gunshot entry wounds to the right temple and

Characteristics of homicide offenders with Schizophrenia from the Russian Federation.

BACKGROUND: It has been suggested that the characteristics of homicides committed by people with schizophrenia from regions with a high total homicide rate differ from the characteristics of homicides by people with schizophrenia from regions with low rates of homicide. METHODS: Homicide offenders in the Chuvash Republic of the Russian Federation have been systematically examined for over 30 years. This study reports on a review of the documents from pre-trial psychiatric assessments and legal proceedings of all people charged with homicide offenses between 1981 and 2010 who were found to hav

National case-control study of homicide offending and methamphetamine use.

The purpose of this study is to examine the relationship between methamphetamine use and homicide. To carry out this study, data from the National Household Survey on Drug Abuse and Survey of Inmates in State and Federal Correctional Facilities were combined to create a case-control design. The main exposure measure is methamphetamine use and the main outcome measure is homicide. Results suggest that the odds of committing a homicide are nearly 9 times greater for an individual who uses methamphetamine. More importantly, the association between methamphetamine use and homicide persists even af

Cyanide fatalities: case studies of four suicides and one homicide.

Deaths due to cyanide poisoning are relatively rare, largely owing to the restricted availability of cyanide. Nevertheless, the authors report five cases of cyanide fatalities occurring within a few months. Cyanide is one of the most rapidly acting poisons known and is still used for suicide and homicide. The discussion focuses on the circumstances, metabolic changes, pathophysiology, blood levels, diagnosis, and management of cyanide poisoning.

Spousal abuse/homicide. A current issue in health risk management.

Domestic homicides shocked Calgary in 1995. As the year drew to a close, statistics revealed that 5 of the city's 18 murders were at the hands of an abusive spouse, former spouse, or boyfriend. This prompted women across the city to campaign for more protection for women. Press conferences were held in which Calgary's most prominent women's groups called for tougher action against violent offenders. With 1996 over the halfway mark, one case of spousal homicide has occurred. Although statistics are down from this time last year, it is an event that should not have occurred. Although public awar

Drug use and interpersonal violence. Barbiturates detected in homicide victims.

To characterize patterns of barbiturate use in homicide victims, we used data from the Los Angeles City Police Department and the Medical Examiner-Coroner's Office to study 4,950 victims of criminal homicide committed in that city in 1970-1979. Barbiturates were detected in 323 (7.9 per cent) of the 4,063 victims who were tested. Detectable levels were present most often in black victims (10.4 per cent), in equal proportions of Anglos and Hispanics (6 per cent), and least often among victims in other race-ethnic groups (4.1 per cent). Among specific subgroups, barbiturate use was greatest in b

Distinctive patterns in child homicide: A retrospective study in Maryland.

INTRODUCTION: Homicide is a leading cause of childhood death, yet few studies distinguish child homicide from adolescent and adult patterns, challenging the development of prevention strategies. We sought to define how child homicide epidemiology differs from that of older age groups in Maryland. METHODS: In this cross-sectional study, we analyzed all homicide decedents in Maryland (2005-2017) using Office of the Chief Medical Examiner data. Age groups were defined per American Academy of Pediatrics: child/early adolescent (0-14), adolescent (15-22), young adult (23-30), and adult (31+). Desc

Child Homicide, Child Maltreatment, and Maternal Mental Illness: A Review.

Mothers and fathers kill their children at similar rates, making filicides (child murders by parents) unique among homicides. In this article, the authors focus on maternal mental illness, child maltreatment, and homicide. Nearly all neonaticides (murder in the first day of life) are committed by young women acting alone. Most filicides in the general population are due to fatal child maltreatment; however, among perpetrators who are found legally insane, altruistic motives predominate. Mental illness intersects with the phenomena of neonaticide and filicide. Personality disorders, untreated m

Psychological autopsy: Overview of equivocal deaths, suicides and homicide-suicides.

Psychological autopsy studies are a method to understand the causes of equivocal deaths. Suicides and homicide-suicide are the result of various events. The understanding of an individual's life before their death, by interviewing the next of kin, provides some insight into the causes. The research articles dealing with psychological autopsy studies through case studies of suicide or homicide-suicide instances, obtained from different search engines, shed light on the mental health, Alcohol use disorder (AUD), and Drug use disorders (DUD) of individuals before death. The primary characteristic

The Emotional Aftermath of Surviving an Attempted Intimate Partner Homicide.

While the issue of intimate partner homicide (IPH) has gained increasing focus, research that pinpoints the experiences of women who survived an attempted IPH is limited. Specifically, studies that aim to understand the aftermath of surviving such incidents are scarce. Thus, the aim of the present study was to explore the emotional experience of IPH survivors following the attack. An interpretive phenomenological analysis was used to analyze the narratives of 11 women who had survived an attempted homicide by their partner. Four major themes emerged: Living between dichotomies: A fragmented id

Homicide, suicide, or accident? Complex differential diagnosis. A case series.

Distinguishing between homicides, suicides, and accidental deaths remains a challenging task. The examination of actual cases, which involve a multitude of variables, significantly contributes to our understanding of these matters. In this context, we present three distinct cases that required the involvement of various specialists to conduct a thorough analysis of the manner of death. In the first case, the integration of on-site inspection, autopsy, radiological, and kinematic data enabled the identification of a homicidal death. In the second case, the combination of circumstantial evidence

BACKGROUND: There is no American population-level study comparing the characteristics of homicides involving victims who were vs were not experiencing homelessness at time of death. We aim to identify variables surrounding homeless homicide that are unique, and intervenable. METHODS: In this retrospective cohort study, we reviewed the National Violent Death Reporting System (NVDRS) from 2003 to 2018 and compared the characteristics surrounding homicides of victims who were not-homeless (cohort 1) vs experiencing homelessness (cohort 2) at death. We utilized the available perpetrator data to c

Psychopathic femicide: The influence of psychopathy on intimate partner homicide.

High scores in psychopathy were associated with acts of violence, and the prevalence of this condition is greater among the prison population than among the general population. In terms of its relation to femicide, two studies, one carried out in Sweden and another in Spain with a prison population, found that psychopathy is an uncommon condition among perpetrators of femicide. This study analyzes 97 cases of femicide in the whole of Spain, in which it was possible to evaluate the degree of psychopathy of the perpetrators using the Psychopathy Checklist-Revised (PCL-R). The scores are analyzed

Trends in Homicide Hospitalization and Mortality in Taiwan, 1998-2015.

In Taiwan, the national research on homicide is rare, mostly discussing the issue of child abuse. We sought to better understand the characteristics and risk factors of homicide through a retrospective cohort study from 1998 to 2015. "Child battering and other maltreatment" ranked first for the 0-4 age group and second for the 5-14 age group. The hospital mortality was 511 deaths. We found that the 25-44 age group had the highest risk and accounted for 44.76% of hospitalization. The most common causes were "fight, brawl, and rape" (49.12%), "cutting and piercing instruments," (13.16%) and "chi

Penetrating craniocerebral injury caused by bladed weapons: Three homicide cases.

Penetrating craniocerebral injuries caused by a bladed weapon are rare events in western countries and often occur in the course of assault. We studied all homicide-related cases of cranial and brain injuries caused by bladed weapons that were seen at the Medicolegal Institute of Marseille over a 5-year period from 2014 to 2019. We found that such injuries are exceptional. The majority occur in the private sphere and are inflicted by men, as they require considerable force. They are rarely isolated but are accompanied by multiple cutting injuries of the thorax and abdomen. Such assaults leave

Juvenile homicide offenders: Why they were involved in serious crime.

The perpetration of murders by juveniles (individuals under age 18) has been a serious concern in the United States since the 1960s. As a result of four decisions by the United States Supreme Court during the 21st century, the likelihood that juvenile homicide offenders will be released back into society is substantially higher than it was in the year 2000. Given these changes in sentencing policies and practices, understanding why youths under 18 engage in homicidal behavior is more important than ever for two reasons: to prevent juveniles from killing in the first place and to determine whet
