Addressing Psychosocial Syndemic Conditions to Improve HIV Testing among Men Who have Sex with Men in Chandigarh, India: Results from a Quasi-Experimental Implementation Research Study.

To improve HIV testing uptake, we implemented a syndemic theory-based intervention targeting syndemic conditions such as depression, internalized homonegativity, and problematic alcohol use among men who have sex with men in Chandigarh (baseline n = 2046; postintervention n = 1812). Peer counselors provided motivational interviewing-based counseling on mental health, HIV testing, and safer sex. The intervention significantly increased 3-month HIV testing from 57.1% to 68.5%, and reduced problematic alcohol use from 30.0% to 18.4% and internalized homonegativity from 13.7% to 1.4%. Linking racism and homonegativity to healthcare system distrust among young men of color who have sex with men: Evidence from the Healthy Young Men's (HYM) study.

BACKGROUND: Experiences with racism predict healthcare system distrust among people of color, but Black and Latino young men who have sex with men (YMSM) also experience overlapping forms of stigma associated with their sexual identities and behaviors (i.e., homonegativity and internalized homonegativity). These forms of minority stress may drive healthcare system distrust among Black and Latino YMSM but have received far less attention. OBJECTIVES: To examine the associations of racism, homonegativity, and internalized homonegativity with healthcare system distrust among a community sample o

Risk and Protective Factors for Intimate Partner Violence Against Bisexual Victims: A Systematic Scoping Review.

Bisexual-identifying individuals appear to be at increased risk of experiencing intimate partner violence (IPV) compared to people of other sexualities. The purpose of this systematic scoping review was to examine risk and protective factors for the perpetration of IPV against bisexual victims and to provide a preliminary quality assessment of the included studies. A systematic search of academic and grey literature was conducted in February 2021. Inclusion criteria specified that study participants identified as bisexual, that the study examined risk or protective factors for IPV, and that fi

Geographic Mobility, Place Attachment, and the Changing Geography of Sex among African American and Latinx MSM Who Use Substances in Los Angeles.

The places that people go and interact with others, along with the characteristics of those places, determine degrees of sexual health risk and concomitant prevention opportunities for gay, bisexual, and other men who have sex with men (MSM). The objective of this paper is to use syndemic theory to guide analyses of 20 in-depth interviews with African American and Hispanic/Latinx MSM living in Los Angeles. We describe the places in which African American and Latinx MSM interviewees live and socialize, and how these places influence sexual behavior, drug use, and access to health care. We find

Sexual and intimacy dysfunction among homosexual men and women.

Homosexually active men and women are no more immune than anyone else from various types of sexual dysfunction and underlying psychopathology. Intimacy fears and conflicts, ignorance, alcohol and drug dependence and relationship issues exemplify the type of issues influencing dysfunction regardless of sexual orientation, although membership of a stigmatized minority sexuality may exacerbate causes of sexual dysfunction. The effects of discordant lifestyle and identity, homosexual identity formation, dysphoria and internalized homophobia on sexual functioning are three examples of these factors

The relationship between family environments growing up and behavioral health among LGBTQ+ adults: The mediating role of internalized homonegativity.

PURPOSE: Disparities in the behavioral health outcomes for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer+ (LGBTQ+) adults-such as depression, anxiety, and alcohol use-are often attributed to experiences of discrimination, victimization, and lack of supportive environments, including hetero- and cis-normative family settings. Yet, how family environments in childhood influence LGBTQ+ adults' behavioral health and internalized homonegativity has not been extensively examined. METHODS: This study utilized a U.S. national dataset of LGBTQ+ adults (N = 499). Data were collected in November 2020 u

Social-support buffers the effect of internalized homonegativity on intrusive sexual thoughts/behaviors.

OBJECTIVE: Among gay, bisexual, and other men who have sex with men, intrusive sexual thoughts/behaviors (i.e., distress about one's sexual urges or behaviors) are associated with depression and engagement in behavior that increases the risk for sexually transmitted infections (STIs). The present study examines the association between internalized homonegativity and intrusive sexual thoughts/behaviors, the intervening effect of depression symptoms, and the potential buffering effect of social support. Furthermore, we establish the subsequent link with physical health outcomes by examining the

A Critical Review and Commentary on the Challenges in Engaging HIV-Infected Latinos in the Continuum of HIV Care.

Antiretroviral therapy for treatment of HIV infection has become increasingly effective. Persistent poor HIV outcomes in racial and ethnic minority populations in the US call for a closer examination into why Latinos are at significant risk for acquiring and dying from HIV. To improve clinical outcomes and achieve an AIDS-free generation, HIV research must address disparities in HIV outcomes in Latinos, the largest ethnic/racial minority population in the US. Immigrant status as well as cultural factors influence HIV care utilization and are essential to highlight for effective intervention de

Experiences of Discrimination and HIV Risk Among Men Who Have Sex With Men in New York City.

The extent of gay-related discrimination in New York City (NYC) and the demographic and behavioral factors correlated with experiences of gay-related discrimination are not well understood. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention-sponsored National HIV Behavioral Surveillance System, a cross-sectional study, was conducted in NYC in 2011. Men who have sex with men were venue-sampled, interviewed, and offered HIV testing. Frequencies of types of gay-related discrimination experienced in the past 12 months were calculated. Associations between types of discrimination and demographic and HI

Body image and associated factors among sexual minority men: A systematic review.

Research suggests that the risk of body image concerns among sexual minority men is high. Recent work has increasingly examined body image in relation to psychological, interpersonal, and behavioral constructs, but these findings have yet to be consolidated and critically examined to identify potential risk and protective factors. The present study sought to systematically review and synthesize published findings on body image among sexual minority men. A total of 136 articles published between January 2011 and March 2022 were included. Sexual minority men were generally reported to have more

Using Photovoice to Understand Suicidality Among Gay, Bisexual, and Two-Spirit Men.

This study explored the drivers of suicidality from the perspectives of gay, bisexual, and two-spirit men (GB2SM) with a history of suicidality. Twenty-one GB2SM participated in this photovoice study taking photographs to depict and discuss their previous suicidality. Data were collected from in-depth individual interviews in which participants discussed their photographs and in turn offered verbal/narrative accounts of suicidality. Drawing on intersectionality, analyses of the photographs and interview data revealed three interconnected themes. First, adverse childhood events and negative ado

The attitudes toward transgendered individuals scale: psychometric properties.

Gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgendered individuals are sexual and gender minorities subject to stigma in a heteronormative culture with binary gender role norms. Although much research has examined sexual stigma in the form of homophobia, or negative attitudes and reactions to homosexuals and homosexuality, little is known about the stigma experienced by transgendered individuals. Transgendered people are those whose gender identity (sense of oneself as a man or a woman) or gender expression (expression of oneself as a man or a woman in behavior, manner, and/or dress) differ from convention

Crossing borders, facing barriers: a rights-based narrative review of HIV care access among African migrants living with HIV.

International migration has long shaped economies and public health. In today's globalized world, migrant health is increasingly a critical equity issue. This narrative review focuses on healthcare access for international migrants from sub-Saharan Africa who are living with HIV. We address the question: "How do legal, policy, and socio-structural factors influence access to HIV care for African migrants, and what rights-based strategies can ensure health equity for this population?" We synthesize peer-reviewed and grey literature (2005-early 2025) using the Availability, Accessibility, Accept

Substance Use and Discrimination in a Sample of U.S.-Based Latinx Sexual Minority Men and Their Main Partners.

OBJECTIVE: Substance use, including drug and alcohol misuse, is associated with myriad health conditions, including a higher risk for HIV infection. Although preliminary evidence suggests that higher levels of relationship functioning can buffer against the deleterious health consequences of discrimination on mental health broadly, such protective associations have been understudied with respect to alcohol and drug use. The topic is particularly understudied among Latino sexual minority men even though they are at greater risk for problematic substance use behaviors and are likely to experienc

Willingness to use and intention to adhere to pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) among men who have sex with men in Jiangsu Province, China.

ABSTRACTPre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) is a biomedical prevention approach that significantly reduces HIV acquisition. Our study aimed to explore factors associated with PrEP willingness and intention to adhere to PrEP among MSM through a cross-sectional survey in Nanjing, Jiangsu province, China. Location sampling (TLS) and online recruitment were used to recruit participants to gauge their PrEP willingness and intention to adhere. Of 309 HIV-negative/unknown serostatus MSM, 75.7% were willing to use PrEP and 55.3% had high intention to take PrEP daily. Willingness to use PrEP was positively

Immediate Antiretroviral Therapy: The Need for a Health Equity Approach.

Immediate antiretroviral therapy (iART), defined as same-day initiation of ART or as soon as possible after diagnosis, has recently been recommended by global and national clinical care guidelines for patients newly diagnosed with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). Based on San Francisco's Rapid ART Program Initiative for HIV Diagnoses (RAPID) model, most iART programs in the US condense ART initiation, insurance acquisition, housing assessment, and mental health and substance use evaluation into an initial visit. However, the RAPID model does not explicitly address structural racism and homo
