OBJECTIVE: A systematic review was carried out of studies of women with endometriosis, to examine the evidence for efficacy of the use of hormonal contraception to improve disease-related pain and decrease postoperative risk of disease recurrence.
METHODS: A search of the Medline/PubMed and Embase databases was performed to identify all published English language studies on hormonal contraceptive therapies (combined hormonal contraceptives [CHCs], combined oral contraceptives [COCs], progestin-only pills [POPs] and progestin-only contraceptives [POCs]) in women with a validated endometriosis

Estrogen is a potent vasodilator through activation of endothelial nitric oxide synthase (eNOS). Arginine and its homologue homoarginine are substrates for NOS, while asymmetric dimethylarginine (ADMA) is a NOS inhibitor. Healthy, never-pregnant women aged 18 to 40 years (n = 158) were categorized according to use of hormonal contraception into non-users (n = 76), users of estrogen contraceptives (EC-users, n = 58) and users of progestins-only contraceptives (PC-users, n = 24). Plasma homoarginine, arginine, ADMA and SDMA concentrations were assayed using a LC-MS/MS method. Compared to non-use

BACKGROUND: Little is known about whether contemporary hormonal contraception is associated with an increased risk of breast cancer.
METHODS: We assessed associations between the use of hormonal contraception and the risk of invasive breast cancer in a nationwide prospective cohort study involving all women in Denmark between 15 and 49 years of age who had not had cancer or venous thromboembolism and who had not received treatment for infertility. Nationwide registries provided individually updated information about the use of hormonal contraception, breast-cancer diagnoses, and potential con

INTRODUCTION AND HYPOTHESIS: Hormonal contraceptive use is common practice worldwide. Although the effects of hormone treatments in the pelvic region are well established, there is no clear evidence regarding their effects on incontinence, bladder, bowel, vaginal and sexual symptoms in premenopausal women. We hypothesized that hormonal contraceptives affect pelvic floor function. We therefore performed a comprehensive systematic review of published studies to determine the influence of hormonal contraception on pelvic floor functions.
METHODS: Electronic literature databases were searched fro

This article will review evidence-based hormonal contraception prescribing options in the primary care setting for reproductive age women who experience headaches. Safe prescribing of hormonal contraception requires the nurse practitioner to be able to differentiate between the common primary headache phenotypes, such as the migraine and the tension-type headache.

INTRODUCTION: Almost half of all pregnancies in the United States are unintentional, unplanned, or mistimed. Most unplanned pregnancies result from inconsistent, incorrect, or nonuse of a contraceptive method. Diminished sexual function and pleasure may be a barrier to using hormonal contraception.
AIM: This study explores sexual function and behaviors of women in relation to the use of hormonal vs. nonhormonal methods of contraception.
METHODS: Data were collected as part of an online health and sexuality study of women.
MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: Main outcomes variables assess frequencies in

Development of hormonal contraception marked a revolutionary step in social change that has improved the lives of women and families worldwide. Since the first oral contraceptive was introduced in the 1960s, hormonal contraception has undergone various stages of advancement. Today, oral contraceptive regimens are safer and more tolerable, with equal or improved efficacy, than the early formulations. Incremental decreases in the dose of estrogens have helped to alleviate some of the unwanted estrogenic side effects of combined hormonal contraceptives. Progestogens have also evolved over time, a

Periodic abstinence and coitus interruptus are the most popular methods of contraception in Poland. Recent studies have provided us with evidence that the so-called "menstrual calendar" may be much less effective than it was believed. In these circumstances, promotion and use of safe and truly effective contraceptives is very important for Polish women. Emergency contraception (EC) is a method which could be used even in cases when other contraception methods have failed. Mechanism of action of levonorgestrel used for EC and possible disturbances in the process of implantation of the blastocys

The rate of obesity worldwide is currently at epidemic proportions. As part of obesity, the metabolic syndrome describes a clustering of metabolic abnormalities that increase the cardiovascular and diabetes risk. In particular, women from developing countries have diabetes in the reproductive age resulting in more pregnancies where both the mother and the fetus are at high risk. Consequently, use of safe and effective contraceptive methods is of paramount importance. Paradoxically, both obese and diabetic women are less likely to use contraception as compared to women of normal weight. Modern

Weight gain is one of the side effects often attributed to the use of hormonal contraception. Concern about weight gain can hinder particularly young women to use a safe contraceptive method or may be a reason for early discontinuation. In the following review, we present studies examining the influence of different contraceptive methods on weight change and discuss the results and methodological problems. During use of hormonal contraceptives, weight fluctuates by about 3 kg over an observation interval from 6 to 24 months. Only in a subgroup of Depo Provera users is the increase in weight hi

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: To summarize the current literature regarding the effects of hormonal contraceptives on adolescents' bone health.
RECENT FINDINGS: Use of progestin-only pills, implant and progestin-releasing intrauterine device is associated with low systemic progestin levels that do not appear to impact ovarian estradiol production or bone mineral density (BMD). In contrast, higher systemic progestin levels associated with the use of depot medroxyprogesterone acetate and combination oral contraceptives suppress ovarian estradiol production and reduce acquisition of BMD in teenagers and yo

Some controversy exists regarding contraceptive management in women with migraines, particularly migraines with aura. The available scientific literature indicates that combined hormonal contraception is safe with most headache subtypes. However, it should be avoided in women with migraine with aura and women with simple migraines who have other risk factors for stroke. Progestin only contraceptives as well as the copper intrauterine device can be safely used in women with migraines. Accurate classification of a patient's headache type can avoid unnecessary restriction of effective contracepti

This systematic review examined whether women who use combined hormonal contraception experience changes in risk of fracture or bone mineral density (BMD) that differ from nonusers. We identified 86 articles from PubMed and EMBASE (published 1966 to August 2005) that reported on fracture or BMD outcomes by use of combined hormonal contraceptives. The evidence relating to combined oral contraceptives (COCs) and fracture is inconclusive, as results from the available studies conflict. Studies of adolescent and young adult women generally found lower BMD among COC users than nonusers. Evidence fo

The aim of the study was the investigation of impact of different hormonal contraceptive drugs on cervix of uterus of young nullipara women with ectopia. Cytologic smears were examined using Pappanikolau method. Cohort study was carried out by using simple blind method. The data were treated by statistics packet (SPSS). The results displayed correlation between taking the hormonal contraceptives Rigevidon and Marvelon and in transformation of ectopia into micro glandular hyperplasia, which did not occur in taking medicine Exluton. Drug Exluton is recommended for young nullipara women with ecto

CONTEXT: Women who rely on long-term hormonal contraception may neglect to use condoms, and thus increase their risk of contracting sexually transmitted diseases, including AIDS.
METHODS: Data from a prospective, multisite study were collected to examine the probability of condom use among 1,073 new users of either the contraceptive implant or injectable; users were interviewed when they accepted their method and again six months to one year later. Multivariate logistic regression analyses identified factors that significantly predicted the likelihood of dual method use.
RESULTS: Condom use

We studied the knowledge and use of hormonal emergency contraception (EC) in Finland by mailing a questionnaire to a national sample of 3000 women aged 18-44 years (response rate 74%). Ten percent of the women aged under 25 and 4% of all respondents had sometimes used EC. Unmarried women were more likely to report having used hormonal EC than were married women, and nulliparous women reported more use than did parous women. However, no statistically significant difference in EC use among women with or without previous abortion history was observed. Older women were less aware of EC than of oth

This study investigates the role of 46 public Consultori of Rome, as far as the hormonal contraception with "pill', the most common contraceptive method used by roman women, is concerned. With a series of phone calls, a hypothetic potential customer asked for an appointment directly with the gynaecologist for getting adviced to use "pill" for the first time. The results show that, although the wait for the first appointment directly the gynaecologist is not long (11,3 days as an average), it is very difficult to get it and this was possible only in 12 cases out of 46. We have noted that the fi
